BASKET BALL, 1933-1934 Lindol Cann, Roger Moore, Carl Heismann, and G-ordon Jerman were lost by grad- uaticn the previous year. The first two had been members of the first squad for four ears. y The largest squad in the history of the school reported for the first practice. Of the 36 starters, 29 remained on the squad for the entire season. Injuries and sickness took their toll during the year and every member of the squad played in at least cne game. With Toney, Huber, and Dicken the only remaining members of the first squad, it was necessary to build a team of underclassmen. A stiff schedule was played and eleven games were won and twelve lost. The best played games were in the Prebe County Tournament. After winning the first three games Monroe nosed out the Trojans in the finals to win the tourney 25-22. The Trojans Were defeated by West Carrolton the following week at the Dayton Sectional. Huber and Toney wer'e chosen on the Liberty He1'ald's all Union County honor team. The ten members of the squad who represented Union in tthe tourney were: Bill Toney, Howard Huber, Malcolm Woodruff, Norman Crist, Ralph Dicken, Joe Marcum, Norman Agnew, Estle Hartley, Keith Earhart, and Earnest Doty. , The first four mentioned above were the seniors, who were lcst by graduation, which left five sophomores and one freshman to carry on. Benge, McDill, Patton, Earhart, Buck, Dunn, Williams, Pace, Doty, and Duckett played in most of the games but every member of the squad saw service in at least one game. James Ardery served as a very capable manager. BASKET BALL, 1934-1935 At the beginning of the school year Ccach Glass assumed the duties of basket ball coach. He was faced with the task of filling tthe gaps left by the graduation of Toney, Huber, Woodruff, and Crist. To do this it was necessary for him to build a team from the remaining six letter men, Marcum, Dicken, Hartley, Earhart, Agnew, and Doty. College Corner, runners-up for two consecutive years, finally succeeded in winning the Preble County Tournament. Thus, for the first time in the history of the school. Union had a championship team. Starting slowly, the team failed to click and was not impressive in the early season games. Improvement was evident from game to game and the Trojans reached their peak of play at the Dayton Sectional Tournament, where they all but eliminated the crack Brookville team, which later won the sectional tournament. The season's record was eleven games won, twelve lost, and cne tied. Several games on the schedule loom as outstanding. The Trojans won overtime games from New Paris, and Lewisburgg lost to West Elkton in an overtime and played Monroe a triple overtime tie game. The win over Lewisburg served notice to the Preble County Teams that she was a title threat for the County Champicnship. The Trojans were a cool, confident, consistent, group of players in the tournament. They easily defeated Gratis 38-23 and came back to hold Jackson scoreless, for three quarters, to win 30-7. On the second Saturday they, again, met and defeated Lewisburg 19-16. The Champitnship game was with Camden, Union winning 24-30 after a hard, and closely contested game. Graduation only took three men from the squad, Dunn, Buck, and Davis, none of whom played regularly on the first team.
