HISTORY GP TI-IE UNION PUBLIC SCHOOL Originally there were two separate schools, one in Ohi-0 and one in Indiana. By a special act of both legislatures the plan to build a Union school that would serve both districts, was made possible. Advantage was taken of the local situation and the building was constructed, half in Ohio and half in Indiana. This is the only school in the country holding this distinction. Bonds were floated and a new building constructed at a cost of 310,000.00 The first four-ye-ar class to graduate was in 1897 and there were eight members of the class. E. P. Wilson was the superin-- tendent and Grant Smith the principal. A Following Mr. Wilson was C. E. Gillespie, and then Edward Gardner, who died August 27th, 1935, D. A. Grove, Jesse Brill, L. D. Brouse, Wm. N. MclVIahan, and the present .superintendent Warnock M. Wright. With the increased attendance the building was not ade- quate and in 1925, under the direction of Mr. McMahan, a new structure was erected with the expectation of taking care of the needs of the community for years to come. In 1934 the Union Public School was reorganized and upon the recommendation of both State Departments of Eudhication the school was changed from the 8-4 plan to the 6-6 plan. The first six grades occupy the first floor, and the upper six grades are on the second floor under departmentalized work. The special sub- jects are in the basement. The Union Public School holds a First-Class Charter in Ohio and a Continuous Commission in Indiana. It is the aim of the administration to adld a Commercial Course and a Vocations course to the present curriculum next year and thereby become first-class in both states. - W. M. Wright.

U H S THE OHIANIAN : 1936 CHOOL DAYS School time has come again once more, the same as years agog But many changes have been made, as time swings to and fro. The country schoolhouse by the road has now been done away. We now have buildings large and fine, and they have come to stay. The stoves and slates are thrown asideg the children walk no more: The school bell, too, is out of date, it rings not as of yoze. The rooms are heated nice and warm, they've water fountains, tcog Electric lights: and window shades: and ventilation new. The play grounds now are made quite large, with swings and teeters, too: The games ar'e supervised with care, not like we used to do. Black man and hide-an-seek are gone, dare base and poison vine: We used to play all these and more, and thought cur times were fine. We walked to school through rain and snow, now children ride to school In motor buses, large and grand, through weather warm and cool. School days are best of all our days, we older folks recall. Of all the days we like the best, school days are best of all. How strange, when young we think them hard, and often wish We're old If we could only plainly see that they are days of gold! What is it then to educate our girls and boys today? To tzain their bodies, minds, and scfuls, in just the Iinest way. -- by MARGARET McQUISTON, Former Union School teacher, written September 18, 1935
