Rockets capture Sectional Sectional Champions: Front Rowg Steve Kelsey, Dean Haggard, Randy Cates, JeffHalstead, Brad Haggard, Mike Bertram, Dave Cox, Rex Lindsay. Back Row, John Warner, Jay McGaughy, With the final buzzer on February 28, 1970, Union High School captured its first sectional title since the Dark Ages. Joyous shouts of laughter and a sprinkling of tears from the most ardent of supporters dominated the acceptance of the spoils of victory. Being disap- pointed for many years, the Rocket partisans congrat- ulated anyone in sight as the champions accepted the tourney trophy, game ball, and completed the ritual of cutting down the nets. The trip back to school was short, as each Rocket expressed his feelings at a pep rally. The week following the victory was a scene of celebration, hectic in preparation for the Regional. Al- though the Rockets came out on the short end by seven points against the talented and much taller Shenandoah Raiders, it was a very successful year, finishing 19-5 and fulfilling one of the fondest dreams of Union High School-a Sectional victory. 52 Coach Moore, Cary Parker, Braynt Lee, Jim Butler, Gary Slinker Joe Thornburg, Coach Conklin, Mr. Hylton. Randy displays skill that earned him area scoring honors.
