Cadet Teachers: Debbie Kerr, Marcia Taylor, Ann Cox, and Cheryl Martin. Through cadet teaching these girls are given a good chance to get a firsthand view of what teaching is really like and how it might interest them as a career. ,A . Cadet Teachers and Student Helpers A recent addition to Union is the cadet teacher program under Mr. l'lylton's supervision. Seniors who participate in this receive credit as a regular class, Student helpers, can give their study hall time to help teachers with extra jobsg however no credit is received. The cadet teacher program is designed for those interested in elementary education and encourages teaching careers. Cadet teachers spend two hours a day in preparation and in the classroom. They prepare units to present to the class in actual teaching, give individ- ual instruction to low achievers, and do research in the ef- fectiveness of different elementary reading programs. Belinda helps to shorten an elementary teacher's steps by bringing the stu- dents back to class after music. 54 Helping a first grader who's just leaming to read can be a rewarding experience and Debbie enjoys it.
