H O O L I S T O Since that fateful day of December 7,l94l, Americans have come to realize more fully the value of education and train ng The demand for armed forces can be fllled only when there is a basic preparation upon which to build For this reason every student should make an effort to develop clean, straight thinking, to form right attitudes, and to give as well as to receive service To meet these demands of the armed forces several addit ions have been made to Union The shop,wh1ch has been gudged one of the best in this part of the state, offered classes in several types of metal work to hi h school boys as well as classes ln National Defense Work Under the supervision of Mr White, Mr Headley, and hr Leaman this branch of schedule classes were organ requirements that for a place in ser these cla ses were physics, general mathemat1cs,and advanc d physical +ra1n1ng The gym, which is no: only one year old, along with the old gym in the main bu1ld1ng,made it possible to offer an ext n t e training continued on a twenty four hour During the second semester additional ized to meet the demands of government students must be more thoroughly trained vice of their country at war Some of sive course in physical education for both the boys and girls Besides regular school work, different organizations extra service for victory The G A C girls sponsored sale of war stamps and a scrap drive for keys,compacts, other small objects of similar metals, the Hi Y boys over a scrap drive for all scrap materials, the shop boys not only collected scrap, but used a large quanity of it to make new obgects, the home economics girls applied them selves diligently to learn war methods of saving in cooking, decorating, and dress making, the commercial students helped in the kerosene rat1on1ng,all members of the faculty donated their services on the different ration boards,and the senior class,a1ded by the Journalism students,composed, mlmeograph ed, and sent letters to Union's Alumni boys in service. The Blue Tri grils made scrap books, which were sent to boys in serviceg and the librarian with her efficient staff kept all types of reading material available in the library depart- ment. Last, but not least the music department promoted the idea that a fighting nation must be a singing nation. Besides the special efforts that the different groups put forth, individuals cheerfully accepted the new regulations and conditions and were ready to serve when called upon. did the and put -1.. 1,12-5-, H3 9. s c H R Y ,V .
