14 The Twirlers were T0ps'll Band The Band also exploded in September with lVIr. Nick the first puff from the cannon. Con- sequently, the first result was felt on the grid- iron when in splendor and majesty they proudly bore the Nlaroon and White over the hay. In salute to the Farmers was the football song to our Alma Mater, Banners of Union. and to our country, the Star Spangled Banner. Elected to the presidency of these responsive soldiers was Harry Kurtz. The secretary was the man with the boosting trombone, Dave Stanley: giving out the music was our handy hopper of many styles, Evelyn Tritschler. But not all the responsibility lay on their shoulders, for every member con- tentedly poured forth his exuberance every Saturday. This was in the form of a U or any other initial formation resulting from the labors of the mathematicians and Mr. Nick. Every Thursday evening, their reveille scheduled until ten but lasting until-oh, well, they got their shut-eye even though they arrived Saturday morning again and drilled until the lines formed at the box office. When the performance ended, they filed up to the grandstand, all prepared for aching appendages and deposited the music makers. Next came the beeline for a cake or cream soda. Candy was still their favorite, but huge salty pretzels were introduced as the number-one fad. Y Vt W i 1 -I t
