DEDICATION The yearbook staff of 88 has chosen to dedicate this year's annual to Sam Johnson, our gymnasium custodian, for his outstanding work. Sam has been with us for almost seven years. Throughout his time with us he has earned a reputation as an honest and helpful person. At any given moment, you can find Sam busy in the gym or on the sidelines at our home games. Thank you Sam for always being there and for your support of UHS. We have had good and bad times, but we have always remained very close. We have taught one another to love, care, and to grow. The memories I have will always be special and I'm proud to say that I was a part of the class of “ 1988” from Union High School. I knew I was to write something about the class as a whole, but in my opinion, our class is not close. Reality is that we ll graduate, and we’ll all go our seperatc ways, and some will never be seen again. Tliat's the way it’ll be and that’s fine, wc all have our own dreams and goals. Not being close has been good for us, because through the years we’ve had to fight for what we have. We’ve been told countless times lhal we were not good enough. We’ve had to fight to get to where we are at. All of us have endured hardships of the past 12 years. No matter what the hardship, we survived. We made it. We beat the odds. We showed that we could do it. We’ve always been us, we didn’t try to be what others were or what others wanted us to be. We just did what was right for us. That is what makes us special. That’s what makes us one of a kind. There has never been nor will there ever be a class like the CLASS OK 1988. We made it! To those who said we couldn’t, to pul it nicely, you were wrong. We Seniors of 1988 are proud to be part of the spirit and intensity that has us at this point in our lives. We have put in twelve long years to arrive at this level, in hopes for guidance in our future. Whether it be marriage. college, or in the work field. Our education we have thus far will help us in all that we wish to accomplish. Anyone for a chew??? 13 SENIOR LASHES I've never been popular, but after I quit trying to be popular. and started being me, I had a lot of fun and have made a lot of memories. Some were good and some were bad, but all in all I had a great High School Life. I’ve got the best friends a person could ever have and they’ve given me the support and love I’ve needed over the years. One thing I can honestly say to the “underclassmen” is if you’re not “popular forget trying to be, it’s not worth it, just have fun. I bet the friends you have now will be the best you ever could have. So be a good friend and have some of the best years in High School. L’ll always remember the fun I had at U.H.S. That’s what makes us a class. We are individuals and most of us go our own way. I don't agree with sticking certain kids in groups, that doesn’t sound right to me. Our class always wants to be the center of attention. Sometimes we get ourselves into trouble. I hope that when we all come back, for one reason or another, that we all have some kind of a future for ourselves as individuals. We will never become the class of '87, and we never really wanted to be, I think my class as a whole doesn’t need to be compared to others. We need to be looked upon as we are, not as we could be. This is an organization of students working fa students. The club leadership included Metla Ringer, President Eric Griffiths, Vice President; Margaret Bray, Secretary; Dana Irvin, Treasurer; and Gary Scaggs, Sgt.-at-Arms. This was a year in which all the members had to work very hard to do what needed to be done. With a year that saw winter homecoming becoming a reality, constitutional changes accordingly, and meetings that aren t always fun, the student council members earned the spots. We have done exceptionally well in the Greenhand Parliamentary Procedure contests. We are looking forward to more good times in the future! Each year, on the morning after Halloween, we clean up mainstreet and tfye storefronts We also find and decorate the Christmas tree in the main hall. To Im in NHS a student has to be recommended by a faculty committee and maintain a CPA or 3.5. I he NHS is not all work. Each year we lake an annual trip for fun and education. A success due to overwhelming numbers together with some pleasant surprises in talent with an entirely new staff. We expected a disaster, but with lots of hard work and determination we produced a fine finished product which showed improvement issue by issue. With a great group of typists and a large group of hardworking reporters, layout and editing became a relatively easy accomplishment. Bill Haney furnished the leadership necessary to see each edition through the rough construction stages. This year’s paper has probably shown more improvement than any of the past few ... an indication of a large but inexperienced staff . . . but improve it did. A we attend workshops, read magazines, and do a little brainstorming tc get new and different ideas. Our staff this year has done much work to see how some of these ideas will work. Taking hundreds of pictures, to get the best ones possible, meant using 600 ft. of film and tons of paper! We enjoyed the chance to bring you this yearbook and thank anyone who helped make it a success. We didn't quite accomplish all of our goals, but that is a good place for next year’s club to start at. W'e sold calenders and s| onsored a dance for fund raising, and had a lot of fun in all the meetings. This club, even though graduation will rob it of quite a few people, should be in quite capable hands being as how: we almost doubled our membership from last year. The kids worked hard and soiik of the seniors really came through. Troy hallow. Glen Smith, and Milt llooton capped a fine four years. All of them being named to all-league. Troy as a runningback. Mill as an offensive tackle, and Glen as a receiver. Greg Poor came back from an early season injury and contributed with a lot of courage. Scoll Hacfer contributed a consistent effort as a free safety and was one of our leading interceptors. Gary St aggs also was tough as an outside linebacker and blockmgback. We didn't win many games, but we fought hard in all of them! In Addition, Troy was named as an Hast-Weal Shrine starter, our tliinl in three years. With a lot of work, such young players as Ken Pfliiger. Steve Boatman. Ken Pfliiger, and Bill Kausler. “Team-Pride Intensity” was this year’s motto of the Bobcat Boys. The team proved what can happen when teamwork is combined with the desire to win. The team was picked to finish near the bottom of the league, but with determination and hard work the team wound up with their second straight District play-off berth. Leading the Bobcats were four talented seniors. 1st team all-league selection Glen Smith broke 16 modem day school records while averaging over 20 ppg. Also making all wapiti league was Greg Poor who was selected second team. He broke 3 records in the asset catagory. .Also outstanding this season were Bill Haney who finished second on the team in scoring and rebounding, and Matt Bray whose intense hustle and consistanl play were greatly needed. As a team the Bobcat broke the season record for shooting percentage and the single game shooting percentage four different times. Although this led to a lot of frustration, there was also the good times which lead to a winning season in other way. The girls played with good sportsmanship and hustle. They showed a great deal of spirit, and always had the will to win. They all gave 100% while they were on the court, and always gave their all to the team. Matt, Judy, Metta, Gene, Erick, and Tanya led the team in point production on the field and by their expample of hard work in practice. These seniors will be sorely missed for all the good things they’ve generated during their careers and for the competitive zeal they brought and taught during the ’88 season. Youth and inexperience was cause for some emotional peaks and valleys during the spring of 88, but the experience gained while doing battle with stronger teams will prove invaluable as our young athletes mature. Keep in mind the fact that there was a lot of success shared by the members of this team during the 88 season . . . a taste of that which is to come!
