Looking back at past BOBCATS, the staff discovered she soon became an integral part of school life being advisor for 5 senior sneaks, 5 proms, 7 class plays, 14 steno trips and 12 chili feeds. Interestingly enough she was also the BOBCAT advisor for 19 years. Her most recent staff positions were NHS advisor for 6 years and Senior Graduation Advisor for 14 years. We didn't quite put all the newness together, but we did come very close from time to time. Probably the best three things we accomplished this year involved the upgrading of our serving percentages, the fact that we beat our league champs Elgin; more than once! And we learned to be aggressive at the net, were the kind of things cited by Ms. Walters as the best of 84. “Next year we will be taller, better, and we will be successful. If these kids will invest a bit more time this summer and work at camp ... we'll be much better off, stated Ms. Walters at our season interview. U.H.S. was proud of the competitiveness of its V.B. team, we’re all looking forward to 85 . Bronsons Lumber Company 219 E. Beakman Union, OR 97883 The 1984 version of Bobcat Football was interesting ... to say the least! We started the season with an inexperienced, young, and physically, very small team. We overcame these obstacles as best we could, and the players went on to earn the respect of the teams throughout the league. Our three wins were well-earned, and two of them came in overtime periods! Those really added to an already exciting season! Two of our key losses came by a total of twelve points. But those two losses to Pine Eagle and Imbler proved that we could play with contenders for the state playoffs. We also shoVved that we could play respectably against the best in the state by kicking a field goal and scoring a touchdown against Enterprise, which was something few teams had done against such a tough defensive team. The 1984 season was a cornerstone for Bobcat Football. The future will be bright for us because of the sacrifices and the leadership the seniors gave us this year. Duane, Roy, Mark, Danny, Tob-by, and Jerry ... Thank you all for making this year a success. .• V Photographs Sponsored By Jack Baremore Logging Courtesy of 968 S Main 44 Dick Mason Union, OR 97883 Back Row -LtoR: Asst Coach Jerry Mayes. La Grande, OR 97850 Union Cross-Country enjoyed a successful fall campaign in 1984 School records were shattered, trophies won. individual achievement was high at all levels and on both boys’ and girls' clubs, and best of all, Union C C was fun! The dynamics of the group made it possible to enjoy what amounts to awfully hard work. ‘‘Every one of our team members did his or her part to make our season one to be proud of and one for which we all have fond memories. We trained and competed as a ‘team’ which always seemed to give us an edge at our meets. What we were able to achieve reflects well on every individual who wore the Bobcat C C singlet for Union High School.’’ 1984 witnessed the ‘‘return of girls C C to Union High. The girls broke or established new school records in nearly every category this year. All-in-all it was an outstanding effort by our team which saw this young group battle week in and week out to best the two teams who finished first and sixth at the state meet. We never quite made it to number one. but we did record a strong second several times. Next year. . . Look out! The Bobcat boys exemplified the ’’team’’ concept from their opening challenge of AAA La Grande, through a hard-fought season of varying success, to their emotional district championship. But. unlike many Eastern Oregon teams, the '84 Bobcats went on to state and shocked the west side with a strong third place finish. The team trophy has never gone to a more deserving or hard working crew. A very nice pat-on-the-back came in January when the sports department of a local newspaper honored this boys’ team as one of the top ten teams” in all N.E. Oregon for the year 1984. These young men . .. this whole team . . wear this honor well. Williams Trucking P.O. Box 206 Union, OR 97883 LiliLLrliV LLUl'Lllli The weight program was established this year in an attempt to provide an alternative to those people who want to improve themselves physically, but weren't participating in a traditional sport. Several athletes who were enjoying an off-season decided to work with weights and made tremendous physical growth. Most notable among these was Rick Ferguson who set a school record, and a personal record with a 519 lb. squat. The majority of the work in the room is done using 'free' or place weights, and thanks to the effort of the Union Booster Club, we are very well supplied compared to many schools our size. In the future the club would like to expand into a larger room and add more equipment. Back Row — L to R: Mr. Towne Asst. Coach. Nathan Atkins. Jason Tennant. Jimmy Moore. Steve Boatman. Shay Hulse. However all three wins were against playoff contenders during the latter part of the season when the inexperienced Bobcats started to jell and exert their collective and individual talents. At the start of the season most expectations were that we would challenge for a playoff spot. We came up short of that goal — losing three league and two non-league games that we should have won. Hopefully the younger players learned from experience what it will take to win in the league. The record was not in- dicative of how hard the team worked and everyone gave their best effort at all times. 1 i r at} m i A7J 4 ' A y ,L _J feil Varsity, Back Row — L to R: Coach Scott Schroeder, Myshkin Miller, Bryan Daley, Craig Kohler. The team worked very hard to achieve two pre-season goals. Those were to have a winning record and make it to district. The team's overall record was 15 wins and 5 losses, and their last loss was at the District Tournament. The Bobcats could take pride in the fact that they were able to defeat every team in the league. There was a heartbreak loss to Wallowa, but it was soon forgotten in the wake of beating the number one team in the league, Imbler. Then the girls defeated Enterprise in a showdown for third place in the league standings. Always putting their heart and talent into every game, the Bobcat girls played with pride and determination. It made a person proud to watch them play, and it was a joy and inspiration to coach them. Teamwork was their motto and it paid off. This year's seniors were a special group and are going to be missed very much. Union came very close to knocking off sixth time champion Enterprise. Up until the heavy weight match Union was ahead by three points but the final ended with the team score 33-30 Enterprise. However, in the district finals it was Union's Alan Sturm that knocked Enterprise out of its third straight district title. In fact, at the state championships Union topped both the league champions Enterprise and district champions Im-bler to finish in the top 8 out of 32 top wrestling schools. The Union Wrestling Team finished the season with 49 wins and 16 losses. Leading the squad to victory were three time district champion and twice third at state Dan Hill with a final individual record of 35 wins, four losses. And the 98 lbs. district champion and second at state Brian McMurphy with 32 wins and 2 losses for his individual record. Jeff Aster and Ross Lindsay will be missed next season as well. Jeff contributed many match points to the team's efforts as well as a fourth place district medal. And Ross showed great determination for the squad even though this was his first year out. Fortunately for the team most of its winning squad will be returning next season. Sparked by such individuals as Troy Fallow, who pinned his way to a second at district finish as a freshman, junior, Greg Good who placed third in district, Scott Lindsay who placed fourth, and Alan Sturm who placed third. Asst Coach Vipperman 1985 Bobcat Track was a bit short on numbers and certainly lacked in experience, but when points were totaled and achievements measured against previous years the '85 Bobcats stood second to none. The League prognosticators picked Union to be strong 5th or 6th with little chance of finishing any higher. It was assumed that the girls and boys teams were simply too young to overcome the loss of the 1984 stars and a definite lack of depth. Our athletes confounded all the polls by finishing 4th and 3rd in the League meet. Our “team” accomplished many fine things because of their “esprit” and daily assistance for every member of “our team. There is no doubt in anyone's mind that our girls and our boys accomplished more than was expected of them, and there should be no question as to how they did so . . . with their team support system. As a result of a season of hard work and tremendous competition Karen, Steve, Dan, Diane, MaryAnne and Roy received special honors from their teammates and coahes. The Seniors on this team have done an especially fine job of teaching their younger teammates self-discipline, fortitude under stress and the positive things to be gained through hard work all season long. Ross, MaryAnne. Rick, and Roy constitute a class act — a hard act to improve upon. 71 What a year for the baseball team! We started the season as a team that was not supposed to win 13 games. We sure upset the people that said we were not going to win games. Once league play started we were 6-0. We led the league up to the last week-end of the season. We were ranked in the top 10 teams of the state all season and finished with a 19 win 7 losses record. That is pretty impressive. The only disappointment of the season comes in the reality that we did not win the fourth consecutive league championship for the seniors.
