Mr. Henry has taught at Union High School for the past thirteen years. He started teaching school in 1970. Mr. Henry attended college at Eastern Oregon State College, California Polytechnic, and received his Bachelorâs and Masterâs degrees from Brigham Young University. When asked about his students, he remarked, âI don't have a favorite grade level, they are all just wonderful. Mr. Henryâs students seem to feel the same way about him. Some of the most common remarks about Mr. Henry were: Everything he does is off the wall, he's very helpful, one of the best sawdust makers Iâve ever known. I admire his dedication, I respect his opinion, and I enjoy his sense of humor. 28 Back Row: Julie Alexander. Christine Lowery. Melame Baxter. Denise Kausler. Shawnee Skeen. Patti Gilbert. We experimented with center in and a center back defense. This may have hurt us this year but in the long run it can only make our program stronger. We failed to win any of our league games. But we were close on several occasions. Even though we didnât win, we felt like the season was a success. We had a team that couldnât have been any closer. We were friends on and off the court. Their warm friendships were worth all the wins in the world. L. to R. Standing: Coach Teresa Gustafson. Charlene Weitlauf. Coach Dee Dee Walters. Kneeling: Jodi Mackey. Samantha Lebold. The 1984 Bobcat Football Team spent a little too much time in traction and not enough time enjoying victories to suit its taste. The '84 season began with Senior dominated lineups, a fine win over a highly rated opponent and soaring optimism. Two weeks after the opener, lightning struck, or so it seemed! In the time it took to play two games, seven starters were side-lined by serious injuries. From this point on, wins were in short supply as youth and juggled lineups caused problem after problem. The thing which didn't flag was a willingness to work hard and the support system withinâ the team itself actually became stronger, creating an âesprit de corps amongst remaining team members. The 1984 football season will not be remembered for a large number of wins, and the losses will soon be forgotten. The 1984 Bobcats will be remembered in the image of Seniors on the sideline shouting encouragement, offering positive comments and sharing the pain of hard-fought losses, while on crutches, braces or in a wheelchair. The 1984 football team didn't get âwhat might have been,â but every young man shared a closeness which can only be found when a âteam faces adversity together.â 42 LISTED FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. 1. Nearly all the daily practices this year were timed in order that each runner could compare his her times and know if he or she was making any progress. Whether it was the opening-day practice four-mile run, the repeated climbs course, the Thursday one-mile straight highway speed runs, or the six-in-a-row half mile sprints; each runner was pitting him or herself against the clock â forcing his or her mind to push the body to its physical limits. And, it paid off when the Bobcats tied highly-favored Joseph for the district title. 1983 witnessed two young ladies turn out for the cross-country and stick with it through sore legs and sore feet right to the end, which should be a source of pride to them. Steve Sheehy and Brian Lowery shared the Most Valuable Harrier award which was based on their finishes over the entire season, and Ross Lindsay earned the Most Improved Harrier award for 1983. This was a well-balanced squad, which saw four different people share the number one runner position at one time or another. If one runner has an off day, anoter one picked up the slack; thus, it was a total team effort and accomplishment. 1983 was, indeed, a very good year! Dollie Hightower This was a basketball season filled with frustration and fun, hard work and missed shots, late practices and first half games. The girls showed lots of talent, had good sportsmanship, a desire to win and be winners, and always played intelligent ball. Total dedication to playing all out in a game and never being out hustled, made this yearâs team a success in their own right. 56 The 1983-84 version of the Bobcat Boys' Basketball was very successful. The team started off with a perfect 6-0 record but then lost a series of tough one-point league games. An emotional 2-point win over Enterprise seemed to give the boys the momemtum they needed to carry them into the District Tournament with a 5-7 league record. Eventual State Champion Imbler stole the first game from the Bobcats on a last second shot. Union regrouped to down Enterprise and claim the third place trophy. The boys couldnât sustain their emotional peak an fell to league cochampions Wallowa for the right to go to the Regionals. The seniors on the team finally achieved the level of success they had worked so hard for during their careers. The Bobcats finished with 12-10 overall record. The J.V.'s and Freshman combined had a 22-5 record. This was the hardest working, most determined group I've ever coached. They not only liked basketball very much but were willing to play hard all the time. They would never give up no matter what the score. It was a real pleasure to work with them, said Coach Schroeder. Mitch Tarter and Les Gore were named to the 1st and 2nd Team District Tournament and All-League Teams respectively. Back Row: Kurt Rehfuss, Chris Roe, Craig Kohler. Bryon Daley. Paul Phillips. Led by senior standouts Travis Tandy and John Williams (3rd in district at 168 lbs.), and David (never say, quit) Graham, the bobcat wrestlers demolished five of the seven Wapiti league teams, finishing with a 5 and 2 league record. Then being true to Bobcat tradition, the team swept through district, compiling team victories of 8 wins and 2 losses, and a third place finish. Outstanding wrestling performances which aided the grapplers throughout the season were given by sophomore Steve Skeen, ending with 19 wins and 9 losses. And Greg Good, who wrestled tough enough to place 2nd at 136 lbs., second in the district championships but lost a trip to state this year, because of a wrestle-back decision to a senior from Enterprise. State bound wrestlers were Travis Tandy, Dan Hill, Brian McMurphy and freshman Alan Sturm. Big Al, being just a freshman, upset quite a few other schoolâs upper classmen this season. Alan was the only freshman from the 136 lbs. division up thru heavyweight to even make it to state. Weâre expecting big things of Mr. Sturm in the future. Dan Hill mastered the mats for his second straight division championship at 115 lbs. Then ripped his way to a third at state medal. Adding to Unions points at state came Brian McMurphy who placed 2nd at district and third at state. In fact Brianâs only losses all year came from the 1st and 2nd state champions, in which Brian had beaten the state champ before. We canât wait til next year. Unfortunately Travis Tandy will not be wearing a red and white uniform next year. But he didnât leave without obtaining the 168 lbs. district championship, and a fourth at state. Union took these four wrestlers to state competition and beat out 23 other state teams. These young men wearing this school colors into competition made a success of themselves and the name Union High School. Mr. Tandy, Mr. Hill and Mr. McMurphy have also earned a berth in the cultural exchange championship with the top two going either to New Zealand or West Germany. 1984 Union Track involved innumerable successes, soul-wrenching failures, untimely injuries, school records, team accomplishments, great finishes, tears of joy, tears of frustration and brought congratulations and earned the respect from coaches and fans throughout the Wapiti League and District 8. 1984 witnessed the resurgance of girls' track in Union. 1984 will serve as a banner year for the accomplishments of a lightly regarded boysâ team who pushed and battled their way to a very strong second place finish at both league and District. 1984 will be remembered as the year that saw Kevin and Patti and Rob and Mitch and Vance and Yvonne and Steve and Ron and Marie and Norm score over 570 season points as they finshed their high school track career, a career marked by achievement, good fellowship and âclass leadership. We finished first in the league for the third straight year with a league game record of 30 wins and 2 losses over the three seasons. Our team batting average for the season was .354. The outstanding feature of our team this year was our ability to get on base. We were at bat 525 times this year and on base 50 % of the time. Our senior boys have been the backbone of our baseball season. Tony and Less have been terrific on the mound as well as at the plate. Darrell really started hitting the ball towards the end of the season. Bryan made the adjustment from catcher to first base to make us strong defensively. He also carried the big stick hitting 6 homers. All in all itâs been a great season because weâve had fun and yet played very sound baseball. 1. CROSS-COUNTRY: MVP â Steve Sheehy. This year's selection for Mr. Miss Bobcat are two outstanding individuals. Each, in their own way have contributed much throughout their years at Union High School. This yearâs Mr. Bobcat, Mitch Tarter, has participated in Cross-Country, Football, Basketball (as an all-star), and Track. His involvement in FFA, Varsity U , and the class of 1984 has proven his diversity as an individual and we are proud to say that this honor is justly deserved. The 1984 Miss Bobcat is Wendy McClaskey. Wendy has demonstrated perserverence, dedication, and loyalty throughout High School. She is active in the Varsity âU Club, National Honor Society, and takes the responsibility of being the annual's advertisement editor. Her success in Basketball has been a key to her involvement and the award of Miss Bobcat. Good Luck to these fine Bobcats. 77 79 P.O. Box 2706 Holmes Rd.
