He joined Union's teaching staff as a Physical Ed. Health teacher, along with Driver's Ed. He also joined the coaching staff as the JV Boys' Basketball coach and Baseball coach. During the second and third years Mr. Elliott was here, he dropped coaching the boys, and picked up coaching the girls’ basketball team. While coaching the Lady Cats, he took them onto the District Playoffs, and the girls took 3rd place. The same year, he took the baseball team onto the State Playoffs. This was very special to UHS, along with being a major accomplishment. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have such a neat person, teacher, and friend at our school. Mr. Elliott is missed greatly by the students and staff of UHS. V l □RGHNIZHTIDN5 Rob Langford. Cliff Story. Annette Doud, Lisa Shaw. Trena Martin. Lonnie Ferguson. Steve Sheehy. Craig Kohler. NRTDNBL HDNDR 5DCIETV The Bobcat staff for 1982-83 found that hard work and getting along together really paid off. The staff had many ideas; by putting them together we hope that this year's annual will be a unique and interesting scrapbook of memories for all. In closing we wish to thank the administration students for the cooperation they have given us this year in the production of the 1982-83 BOBCAT. Wendy McClaskey. Julie Alexander, and Patti Gilbert. CO-EDITORS: Annette Doud (Above). Kristy Kaplan (Right) THE BDBCRT 32 BRVLVNX Our high school newspaper made it through another year without a regular staff, but with news features, and editorial contributions from a few students and teachers, it worked out rather well. This year’s paper contained few, if any, items borrowed from another newspaper or other sources. 1982-83’s Baylynx featured more photographs than previously — a definite improvement for the paper's appearance. The single major weakness of Union’s school paper still remains the fact that the student body neglects it as a forum of expressing ideas and thoughts which could be of value to the school. Each win was special in its own way... Joseph, because it was our first win; Wallowa, because it was our Homecoming and they were picked to beat us hardily; and Elgin, because they were supposed to slaughter us!! The 1982 version of the Union Bobcats fell one win short of being an unqualified success. The loss on the last day of the season taught us all how hard it is to “almost be there,” but showed everyone how good it will be when we arrive!! A special thanks to our 1982-83 seniors; Cliff Story, Tom Hall, Rick Delepierre, Brian Yeargain, and Dan Adams. 41 Trena Martin. Yvonne Kausler. Marie Daley. Kristy Kaplan. Coach Carpenter. Karen Richards. Patti Gilbert, Tracy Schubert. Rhonda Staley. The 1982 Volleyball players had another improving season. This was the closest we’ve come to District in 5 years. We worked hard in practice, games, and even harder at being a team. We had our struggles but all in all we came out having a really fun year. 42 UPCDmiNG VDLLEVBRLL 5TRR5 Back Row: Dollie Hightower. This was a year that saw the boys compete against Washington State schools in Walla Walla and Richland. It was a year that saw district medals won by Mitch Tarter, Ross Lindsay, and Steve Sheehy. Also, 1982-83 witnessed freshman Steve Sheehy representing U.H.S. at the State Championships in Eugene. 47 JUNIDR HIGH v □ L L E V B H L L Back Row. Left to Right: Randy Volk. The 1982-83 version of Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team was much better than their record indicated. Although they didn’t win many games, most of their losses were very close and hard fought to the end. Through a combination of bad luck and some injury problems the Bobcats did not come close to their goal of going to district, but no one in the league tried harder or out hustled this team. If you measure success by grit and determination these guys are the winners every time. 55 Standing; L to R: Tina Baremore, Rhonda Staley, Wendy McClaskey, Cherie Skeen, Jonna Klinge, Kristy Kaplan, Patti Gilbert, Jennifer Tyler. Basketball for the Lady Cats took us through Chili feeds, Payette, defensive dances, line laps, hustle, VD (variable defenses) bitter losses, great conditioning, wins on the road and almost into the play-offs as we ante-i-overed the basket against Elgin. We represented our school with dignity, humble in victory, gracious, but with tears, in defeat. It was a good year. GIRL5' 56 Standing: L to R: Samantha LeBold. Peggy Phillips, MaryAnne Edvalson. They were 3rd at district, and put out a district champion in Dan Hill at 115lbs., and a 2nd at district in Rick Tyler at 106 lbs. Plus several 3rd place winners such as Brian McMurphy, Steven Skeen, John Williams, and Ron Watson. It was a generally accepted fact in the Wapiti League that the Union club was the surprise of the year as they walked off with wins in three smaller meets and reign as the 1983 boys team champions of the ICU Invitational. Bobcat athletes have always been known as fierce competitors, but the '83 team gave new meaning to the word as the girls scored every time out (the first time in 4 years), and the boys wound up their season with second place finishes at both League and District. State qualifiers include Cliff Story, Andy Sorn, John Griffiths, Kevin Sheehy, Vance Lindsay and Roy Baremore. Kevin and Cliff finished in the top six in three events among schools represented at the state meet. All-in-all it was a great year for Bobcat Track, which might be excepted from a group of athletes who were . . . “the hardest working crew I’ve had in any spring since starting track in 1975!” Says Mr. Hayes. 64 BASEBALL The 1983 Bobcats repeated as Wapiti League Champions. The success of the team cannot be attributed to one specific reason or one particular event. Throughout the entire year the players exhibited the class and finese of veteran champions. With a solid group of freshmen behind them, the “old veterans” of the club exhibited their skills at winning baseball games. Our seniors were the backbone of the club. They did all and more than was asked of them; Brian Yeargain, Andy Sorn and Tom Hall will be sorely missed. 66 PHOTO BY STEVE POWELL Left to Right. Standing: Coach Payne. Darrell Hammond. Like Annette, Cliff moved to Union from Elgin, and has excelled as a Bobcat. Cliff is well-known for being such an excellent athlete. He plays football, basketball, and track. He was chosen as Most-Valuable in both football, and track, also he was chosen to play in the East-West Shrine Game. Cliff has held offices in clubs, and is a friendly guy who is fun to be around! Annnette Doud has been chosen as this year’s Miss Bobcat. For the past four years, she has been a true Bobcat. Being an honor student, she has also held offices in clubs and classes, and excelled as Union’s Most-Oustanding cheerleader. She is outgoing, likes to flirt, and to make new friends. She is certainly one of the most outstanding Bobcats to passthrough UHS! 79 P.O.
