Focus on the Annual Staff Although deadlines came all too quickly, and there never seemed to be enough time to get everything done, we all did our part to bring this annual to you. We did everything from washing airplanes to selling raffle tickets to earn money. Even though it was discouraging at times, it paid off in the end. We hope that this annual brings something to everyone: to the underclassmen, memories of another year at good old UHS, and to the seniors, one last look at the fun-filled days of high school. by Paula Tarter Editor Bay Lynx EDITOR — Paula Tarter CO-EDITORS— Staey Stanbro Karen Irvin ADVISOR — Mr. Toni Nov SECTION HEADS News — Dan Griffith Sports — Trina Oxford Ads — Lori Hooton Advisor, Mr. Tom N'oy Editor, Paula Tarter This year the Bay Lynx had what you might call a year of learning.” We had an inexperieneed staff and also a new advisor. I think that with what we had to work with, we put out a pretty fine paper. Our staff members worked very hard and eaeh of them contributed alot of ideas which helped to make our paper a little more original, and alot more interesting. All in all I think that everyone worked hard and it showed in the work that we produced. I hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did. Hmm, I wonder if they have tacos today, will it mean taco salad tomorrow?” Congratulations Mr. Stewart Mr. Stewart is receiving a dedication page in the 1981 annual due to his outstanding achievements through his years as a teacher at U.H.S. Mr Stewart has been teaching Agriculture at Union for 34 years. He has received many awards, including. Agriculture Teacher of the Year, which he received in 1977-78. He has also been active in many community services, one being a charter member of the Union Lion’s Club. He is a past president of this organization as well. His two most outstanding achievements have both come this year. At the State Convention for HA students, which was held March 23, 1981, Mr. Stewart received an award of 1981 Honorary State Farmer Degree. This is the highest award given by FFA, and is decided by outstanding services. Mr. Stewart is one of 18 recipients of this award. He has also been sworn in by the governor to the Oregon Teacher Standards Commission. This is indeed an achievement, as only 17 are chosen in the state and Mr. Stewart is one of only three in Eastern Oregon. He has the job of approving educational program standards, and also sets certification requirements for teachers. This is truly a remarkable accomplishment, and we are very proud to have him at U.H.S. It was a season of frustration where a few individuals worked hard for personal satisfaction. We did the best we could with the tools we had, commented Wrestling Coach, Dave Obert. This year we seperated the true winners, from the ones that didn’t care. The ones that did will be back playing tough next year, and the ones who didn’t...??” stated Volleyball Coach, Lynn Carpenter. This track season was one of the best in Union History, stated Track Coach, Tom Hayes. This group has demonstrated the most desire of any baseball team I’ve had at UHS — due to this and their togetherness with each other. I’m sure it will be the most successful team too! said Baseball Coach, Clenn Elliott. Unexpectedly successful!!! It’s great to be around such a hard working, dedicated group, stated Cross-Country Coach, Scott Schroeder. We didn’t get a chance to meet all our goals, but we did our very best and that’s all we can do,” stated Football coach, Tom Hayes. One of our many goals this year was to be able to say at the end of the year, we liked who we were working with. I can and I did,” commented Girls’ Basketball Coach, Glenn Elliott. ’’With little luck our record could have been much better,” commented Boys’ Basketball Coach, Scott Schroeder. The 1980 Cross Country season proved to be successful as the Bobcat boys ran their way to State for the third time in four years. Mr. Schroeder, in his first year as Cross Country coach, did not know what to expect, but as the fall weeks passed it became increasingly clear that the Cats would be a top contender for the District championship. I'nion won three meets, and placed near the top in the rest of them. After winning the District meet at Pendleton in a close finish, the Senior dominated team headed for State. The Cats placed seventh in a tough field of ten teams. Jr. High Football Top Row, left to right: Coach Obert and Coach Townee. 2nd Row: Sam Shaw, Pete Harrieon.
