The 1978 Homecoming Festivities brought a week full of fun and excitement for everyone. Students kept busy with dress-up days, which included Shoot for the Stars and Wake Up to a Bobcat Victory . There were noon activities such as a wheelbarrow, tricycle, and pyramid building contest, and each night the spirit rose at a bonfire, noise parade, and Victory Dance. Oh, what a wonderful week!!! THE VARSITY SEVEN won every meet they entered, except the Mac High Invitational, when Walla Walla High School (AAA) beat them by one point Union won the district meet and earned the right to compete in the STATE Meet for the third year in a row. The STATE MEET was very satisfying for the team. They scored 44 points for the first place, out pacing Vernonia who was second with 91 points. The STATE MEET ended three years of hard work for a group of Seniors. They had aimed for the goal of state champions since they were Sophomores. There were five Seniors on the team. Four of them competed in the top seven at state. They were Sam Griffith-5th, Jake Schas-9th, Mike Murphy-17th and Jim Sheehy-22nd. Dennis Baremore was the fifth Senior who was 8th on the team. The other Union runners at state were; Jeff Brookshire-42nd, Phil Stewart-13th, and Tim Sheehy-49th. Courtesy of Jim Sheehy 12 Top row: Coach Carlson, M. McCurphy, J. Crow, T Lee. D. Telford, B. The girls gave 100% in all their activities, which could be seen as they went on the floor to perform. Besides many money making activities, the squad also placed 3rd in a Style Show-Spirit Competition held at the Grande Ronde Mall. Kathy and Diane went to camp in Corvallis at OSU for a week in July. And, thanks to the girls, this year's Homecoming Week was a great success and fun for all those involved! After the sad event of losing Anna Hall, classmate and squad member, Paula and Jill managed to do their best to support the JV teams. They raised money by bake sales, bottle drives, and also held a Bobcat raffle. And you do have to admit that they are the cutest Cats around! Being an honor student, she has also excelled in sports, held offices in clubs and classes, and is the recipient of many awards and scholarships throughout school. Janet is very outgoing, loves to smile and make new friends. And she certainly is one of the most outstanding Bobcats to pass through UHS! Cole Void Cole Like his sister Janet, Paul has been a true Bobcat to remember, also. He has been active in football, wrestling, and baseball for four years. He leads the student body as President this year, has been class Vice President for two previous years. Clubs and music have been part of his high school career also.
