Phone 3131 Union, Oregon 1962 CLASS PROPHECY or BOBCAT HUNT IN SOUTH AMERICA The blaring of the ships’ horns and the busy surroundings of the New York harbor makes my head whirl as I move out in our chartered atomic passenger ship, the SS UNION for our Bobcat hunt in South America. The year is 1982. Amidst this racket a voice is yelling ’’Help! Let me off! It belongs to New York’s Chief of Police, TERRY VICKERS. He was saying his last goodbyes to his favorite prisoner and now he can't get off unless he jumps, and it is a long way to jump. The girls on board are feeling very unsafe. A photographer for the magazine, Playboy is running around trying to find models. That is ED MILLER, of course, and right now he has enough photos to fill 10 magazines. There is a disturbance on the lower deck. A floating object has been sighted a few yards off. It is a space capsule and now that they have it aboard, someone is getting out. It is JOHN COX, and he has a very disappointed look on his face. Apparently when he reached the moon he discovered that someone had made it before him. CHERYL SPAIN, our first woman astronaut, ran out of boys down here on earth and thought maybe there would be some up there on the moon. It is too bad that a woman had to be there first, tho. Here comes the deck-swab to clean up this mess caused by our astronaut. It is JOHN PHILLIPS with the mops and buckets. He enlisted right after he left school, but is still cleaning these decks. He said that the Navy offered him an officer's position but he, being modest, refused it. The little island of Cuba is coming into sight. Havana is the home of one of our best undercover agents. He covers up as a vacuum cleaner salesman and goes by the name of JOHN LaVERDURE, We are permitted to get off the ship here to stretch our legs. Boulevard de Castro can be seen from this position on the docks. Right there on the corner of this main street is a little beauty salon with a big sign out front. It reads Ham's Beauty Salon . That must be JO HARN. No wonder Cuban girls look so chic and well-groomed. Across the street from Jo's is a dazzling nightclub called The Bamboo Hut . JUDY ERWIN broke away from the main nightclub in Union and started one up over here. A very good business from what I hear. We are back on the ship and heading for Panama to start our hunt. A little island is seen off to the side of our ship. There is a huge mechanism standing on it and two people beside it waving. It is BOB COCKRELL and Mr. Bates with their time machine. When America and Russia started arguing over Bob, .he took Mr. Bates and headed off to a quiet place where he could concentrate. Mr. Bates is Bob's assistant--someone to press the buttons on his machine. The Panama Canal, which appears much larger than before, is in sight now. BOB DROKE, that great engineer, became tired of surveying for the digging of irrigation ditches, so he decided to widen the canal. He likes doing things big. Now JIM HIXSON has a bigger area for practicing his swimming. He plans to be the first man to swim the English Channel underwater. We are now arriving at Colombia and another busy dock. A group of policemen are waiting at the bottom of the gangway. They are boarding the ship and surrounding some little guy. That is NATE JACOB they are taking away. He sold booze to those poor unsuspecting natives and illegally at that. Nate was such a good boy when he was at school. People are jumping and scattering out of the way of some hotrod. It is Mrs. Pyatt in her wheel-chair and she is doing about 50 miles an hour. It was her still that was producing the liquor that Nate was selling. She came down seeking the Fountain of Youth. The policemen are scattering now that Mrs. Pyatt has her cane out. The still is her only way of making a living, now that she isn't teaching English anymore. Compliments of H. M. MEAT CO. Fresh and Cured Meats Cold Storage Lockers Union, Oregon 50 Compliments of UNION DRUG CO. Cosmetics - Prescriptions Giftware Union, Oregon The safari is ready to go into the jungles to hunt Bobcats and anything else if we can find them. The nurse that is accompanying us is a beauty. Her name is ELEANOR SCHMIDT. She says her sole purpose is to treat those who mistake each other for Bobcats and end up with buck shot in the posterior. Our cook on this expedition is JANELL BROWN. She is a very good cook except for one thing. She is crazy over Chinese food and that is all we get. She got this craze from working in some cafe during her high school days. Someone is walking towards us and is sure looks like JAN RUSSELL, but what could she be doing out here? She says that she won a Mrs. America contest with the prize being a one-way ticket to the jungles of South America. Now she is trying to find a way back. We are closing in on the Amazon River, leaving the trucks behind and packing our baggage on our shoulders. Shots are ringing out in the distance. That must be the elephant hunter, EARL GRAHAM. He seems to be having a difficult time locating elephants, so he is shooting ground squirrels for the natives' dinners. He isn’t very successful with that elephant gun, tho. A battle is going on between two Amazon groups. MARY BERGER is heading one group while her enemy is Jackie Berry. It is a long way from their battling in volleyball games. Mary teaches Sunday School in her spare time. As we travel on, we spot little white houses spread over the land. La VERNE BRIGGS and her husband live in the first one. They joined the Peace Corp thinking that they could get more peace out here. LaVerne had to send for Mrs. Stanford, though, when the natives asked her how to cook shrunken heads. LaVerne's neighbor, JUDY HALL GARRETT, is coming along quite well with her five grandchildren. She is surely proud of being the youngest grandmother in the jungle. A drug store is appearing in the opening. It is another branch of the BAXTER BAXTER pharmacy business. They have stores everywhere in the world. They have been very successful since they took over from Johnson Johnson. LEILA HARSIN has set up a little beauty salon in a mud hut for women passing by on safaris such as ours. You'd be surprised about the number of women who want to look beautiful out here in the jungle miles away from civilization. Leila always did want a great big business, but she settled for this. Her partner, PAT GRAHAM, specializes in giving mud baths and massage treatments. BARBARA HARRIS is leading a group of young natives in a song. They don't sound like our chorus back in Union, but they are going all right. They don't understand the twisting songs that Barbara is teaching them. Do I hear strains of Mashed Potato ? Across the road from our little choir is a theater. The signs outside picture MARIE EDWARDS for two performances a day. She is just starting out on her career as a singer and decided that this would be a good place to start. Of course, she has been here over 10 years trying to decide whether to go out and sing these native chants to American opera fans. ROBERTA MAYOTTE is doing her best as a missionary nurse out here, but she complains that the old men will not let her alone. Seems like 'Berta has always had that trouble. I've been hearing rumors about a wild man in these parts. He is supposed to be red-headed, big and brawny and swings in the trees yelling wazoo . The natives call him Dah-vee. I've a sneaking suspicion it's RAMPTON. Ed Sullivan has promised me a spot in his TV show if I bring him back alive. The above has been the first installment of Bobcat Hunt In South America . You will have to tune in next year to find out the outcome of all of this....... So until then, this is your Irish correspondent, RAY MAHOOD, signing off for now. Compliments of J. C.
