CLASS PRCPHECY There was the usual backslapping, handshaking, and well, some of the soft-hearted girls shed afew tears. I guess that's the way all class reunions are, or at least ours was. Yes, after ten years, we were once again high school kids in the senior class of'53 at dear old Union High. I was really amazed to find all of us there, but after all, it's so inspiring to see your friends and classmates again. A E A There was Jimmy Heavner, Class President of '53, but now doing engineering work on the Pacific Coast. Who should be driving a taxi but Bonnie Sain. She has a fleet of her own in Lincolnton. Rather proud of you, Bonnie! You can't think of Bonnie Sain without Bonnie Peeler. She was there, telling about her career as telephone operator in Charlotte. Auton's Machine Shop. The proprietor could be none other than Robert Auton. His two worthy helpers, the Grigg boys, Bud and Jim. From what I heard, it must be a very thriving business. Upholding the law is Dean Reep, Sheriff of Lincoln County. We need more solid citizens like you, Dean. The nation's best-selling novel, Chained to My Heart , was written by Irene Gilbert. I knew she liked writing, but was surprised to find she took it as a career. Three of the girls are now wearing the white uniform of mercy. Sue Richard, Jean Gil- bert, and Marie Johnson. Nurses are always in demand, girls. We always were an intelligent bunch, and J e r r y H ou s e r proved it when he traveled to Washington, D. C. , and took over the job as Chief F. B. I. Agent in that city. Congratulations, Jerry! Like father, like son - so Edward Helms followed in the footsteps of his Dad, and is now building homes all over the state. The famoufs fashion designers of a fabulous shop in New York City are Shirley Warlick and Virginia Whitener. Must be a wonderful life from the way they described it! I wasn't surprised at all to learn that Benny Yount was head of the Athletic Department at Lenoir Rhyne. Without a doubt, Benny always was a lover of sports. Carroll Hoyle seems to have an interesting life -Professor of Biology at one of our lead- ing universities. There just isn't a stopping place to what the class of 53 can do. One of our girls had already started her career as housewife before we graduated. Now it's a full-time job for Madge Warlick Heavner. And Jo, dear little Jo Warlick. She always was a working girl, still is, owner of a beauty shop in Hickory. Lewis Leatherman didn't go to the big city. He's still right in Vale, and a very prospe- rous dairy farmer. Peggy Carswell always did like 4-H Club work. She is now th e 4-I-I leader inLinc oln County. Working as a mechanic is Jack Beam. He said he liked his job fine. Jane Royster is a very efficient stewardess on the Western Airlines. Jane always seemed just that type. Jamsie Lee Cody. Well, she is a professional cheerleader for the Blue Devils of Duke University. Jimmy Gilbert is at home and a very prominent farmer. Geraldine Leonhardt is swimming champion of North Carolina. Back in high school, she really had the energy for a swimmer. Then there was Bill Scronce, or better still, Captain William Scronce, home on a few days' leave and proudly bearing the Banner of the United States Marines. Evoid Fisher is now a very prominent businessman. That takes care of them, and looking at myself, I Wonder just what I have accomplished. A few grey hairs, but after all, I can't expect to get younger as the years go by. I guess I'm just another cog in the wheel of life. The Class of '53 is living up to the expectations of their parents, the teachers and super- visors of U on High and are grasping life with much enthusiasm.
