C ASS DUE FAREWELL The class of 1950 must go away from here, Out in this busy world we're overdue. The way seems clear before us, But something strange does us subdue, We hear a voice calling, Not finished, just begunf, Our days will no longer be spent in dream, Wfe shall not drift at ease along life's stream, We must live with zest and beauty In a world of toil and duty. May all you have taught us, Not be blown away like a gust. Be with us we beg, as we try to succeed. You'll be proud of us, Dear Unionf: You'll be proud of us, indeed. Oh, Union High School, with all your training and your care, Have guided us through four short years of toil and strife. Although for freedom we are yearning, Our heart still burns with love for you, Farewell, Dear Old School and Alma Mater, farewell. BONNIE LUTZ, Class Poe! CLASS SUNG Now here we leave you And we go our many ways, But Alma Mater You we'll always praise. And we also thank you For the friendships we have made Here at Union High School Whe1'e we worked and played. CHGRUS Alma Mater, to you we will be true. Alma Mater, we bid you fond adieu. C ASS PROPHECY One cold winter day, in the year of 1962, I sat down beside the heater in my home. After getting warm I must have gone to sleep, and in my dreams I was reading a newspaper. Looking on the front page I found immediately that Don Houser was the editor. The headlines read, Bob Scronce has wrecked Greyhound Bus in Appalachian Mountains, of course this happened through no fault of his own, because the roads were covered with ice. Fortunately, he or no passengers were injured. Glancing at a picture I saw a pretty, familiar face. Wondering who the picture was I began to read-Betty Joe Propst, elected Miss America of 19627 Here is a write-up of Union High School. Geraldean Hoyle is Home Economics teacher, Thelma Rae Sci'-once gym teacher, Bobby Bollinger agriculture teacher, and, look! under the write-up is a poem, Life At Union, written by Bonnie Lutz. Next I turn to the advertisement page. Here's quite a collection of ads. I think I will read them. Pete's Grill, owner, John Carswell! John always went back for the second helping in the school cafeteria. Here's a picture of Helen Ingle in a Beauty Salon. Beside her stands Katherine Hauss, the owner. What! a new theater owned by Dorman Davis, and he's advertising his first picture, Live and Learn, starring Edna Huss, with Sam Goins as the producer of the picture. I must see this picture. Oh, look! Holiday on Ice is back in town. Edna Johnson and Nettie Smith are Glamor-Skaters. This will be a great show. I know. Turning to the Sports Page, I found that Bobby Weaver has signed up to play with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was a good ball player in school. Picking up the Second Section I found that Charles Houser is now the governor of North Carolina. Here is a picture of a plane in Chicago. These people look familiar. Oh, yes, it's Donald I-Ieavner, the pilot of the new plane, and his stewardess, Julia Ann Hoover. Another picture is that of Helen Huss. receiving a diploma from a National Art School. Wondering where the other four classmates were, I turned to the Society Page. Here they are. Lois Bolding is working in a telephone office in Charlotte, North Carolina, Nell Bass is a reporter for the Kingsport News, in Kingsport, Tennessee, and Betty Carswell is secretary for the New Royster Packing Company in Florida. They're all home visiting relatives and friends. I don't see John Gilbert's picture in this paperg he must be home helping his father on the farm. Why look at the paper any more, since all my classmates are accounted for? Just then I felt someone tapping me on my shoulder, arousing me for supper. BEATRICE ELAINE HAUSS, Prophetess
