At first we were confused by the rules, but gradually We became ac- customed to the daily routine. In our Freshman year our class numbered 41. From this class the officers elected were: President, Ted Goins, Vice- President, Mary Gilbert, Secretary and Treasurer, Sarah Kiser. As Sophomores, eight girls were honored by being chosen as waitresses for the Junior-Senior Banquet. Our otlicers that year were: President, Ted Goins, Vice-President, Jack Rhyneg Secretary, Evelyn Carpenterg Treasurer, Sarah Kiser. The largest event of our Junior year was the Junior- Senior Banquet, given in honor of the Seniors. Another big event was the initiation of seven of our members into the National Beta Club. The class ofhcers elected were: President, Ted Goinsg Vice-President. Sonny Sain, Secre- tary and Treasurer, Sarah Kiserg Reporter, Jacob Reep. In 1948, our Senior year was begun with our looking forward to graduation. The Acorn staff was elected, and we started working like bees. Oflicers were: President, Ted Goins, Vice-President, Jacob Reepg Secretary and Treasurer, Sarah Kiser, Reporter, .lack Rhyne. Now we number 22 in our Senior year, hoping we all Hnish the work required of us. NVe are honored to have a member of our class, Sonny Sain, who has had perfect attendance all through the eleven years. We hope he can finish with a perfect record of twelve years. Our past holds pleasant memories, and we are looking forward to a successful future for all. We entered as timid Freshmen, we leave as graduates bold, And we find it hard to realize the knowledge our young heads hold. We've had our foolish notions knocked higher than Franklins kiteg Our minds have been made over, and we know it served us right. VVe've spent four years in labor hard to prove the fact once more That life is quite confused, and two and two are seldom four. We're crammed to the brim with learning. and now we must turn it to And if one of us is a failure, he hasn't a single excuse. The more we work and the less we talk the better results we shall get, For we've had four years of trainingg it may make us successes yet. Let us admit it fairly as high school Seniors should: We're proud of Union High Schoolg it's done us a lot of good. CI .ASS SUNG In Learning's praise we sing this songg Sing hey, sing ho. We voice her virtues loud and longg Sing high, sing low. We came to school with an empty mind, Sing hey, sing ho. But wiser children now you will never find: Sing high, sing low. CHORUS Come and sing all nightg Come and sing all day: We'll sing the praises of the dear old school, Whiling the bright hours away. VVe've learned the longest words to spell, Sing hey, sing ho, And foreign languages as well: Sing high, sing low. With mathematics and isotherms Sing hey, sing ho, We're all on very familiar terms. Sing high, sing low. No more in Union School we'll shine. Sing hey, sing ho, But soon we'll be alumni fine: Sing high, sing low. And even when we are far away, Sing hey, sing ho, We'll tell her virtues till we're old and Sing high, sing low. gray: USC ',,-Qgerywff , f f if ' S ,v 4 X Z Z AN 4 sfgfxx f 1-ff fe, 'f X J S' A r V --.513 , wwf ' ,Ai gk I wxiljgfvq , f viz: 1. 4 TED GOINS He that lmtlz knowledge sprlfrerh his words. 4-H lQ'1v,11 4g Erin Club -1' TL111 51.121- 1 511111 -'15 17. The music was so soft and sweet I must have gone to sleep, and in my dreams I heard the announcer, Lewis Quickel. say something about the Class of '49 of Union I-Iigh School. Imag- ine my surprise when I heard him announce Conductor Glenn Hoover and his symphony orchestra along with I-Ielen Lackey, his noted soprano. Then, in my dreams, I wandered into a large department store owned by Jimmy Jetton, who had as his very able assistant Sonny Sain. Mary Gilbert was cashier, while Evelyn Carpenter and Doris Hoover were two of the clerks. Since ball playing was always Bob Keener and Ottman Jar- rett's hobby I was not surprised to hear of their playing for the New York Yankees. Blair Davis and Johnny Davis are still in the same old rut. They are now driving Greyhounds instead of Union High Buses. Sarah Kiser and Jean Rhyne are doing secretarial work in Wfashington, D. C. Jack Rhyne and Jacob Reep are making quite a name for themseives as professors in the held of Agriculture at State College in Raleigh. Sidney I-Iouser has followed in the footsteps of his father as a successful farmer and well-known citizen of the community. Ted Goins, one of our outstanding students of the old class, has made quite a name for himself as a famous minister and writer of religious books. Barbara Seagle has now become a member of the faculty of Lenoir Rhyne College as teacher of Bible. Jessie Weaver' is an able manager of the Library there with ease Houser as her assistant. The last of my classmates were accounted for, as I heard someone calling, t'Mary, Maryf, arousing me from my sleep to go to my own Work as manager of Eagleis Dime Store.
