Graduate of 1944 wn kkk Class History In the summer of 1941, forty-nine boys and girls entered Union High School, looking forward to four years of profitable training. We realize now that we were in the rough and needed polishing. Much has been accomplished, but there is still room for improvement. After the registration, we elected our class officers. Under their leadership and the guidance of Mr. Turner, our principal, we completed a successful year. When we enrolled the next year, we found that several members of our class had not returned. There were several changes in the faculty, too. Since this was our second year in high school we felt more at ease and began to take part in more of the school activities. The next year as Juniors, several more dropped from our enrollment. Because of this and a decrease in the membership of the other classess too, we lost a teacher and the commercial department. Due to war conditions, our school was denied certain activities. We were not permitted to give the Junior play; however, we did give the Seniors a banquet. During the summer of 1944, there was a widespread epidemic of Polio. This delayed the opening of our school until September 18. Twenty-six enrolled as Seniors. T'wo have stopped, leaving twenty-four struggling along, looking forward to graduation. Members of the class have taken part in all activities. Seven are members of the 4-H Club; nine are on the basketball teams; four are in the Beta Club; and four are members of the F. F. A. Our past is a pleasant memory and we are hoping for a successful future. Historian, Brit. LEATHERMAN. tok kk at 5, SNA KGL fir Gi. Motto: United We Serve Flower: Rose Colors: Red and White Class Poem We the Seniors are ready to face the world, Leaving behind the joys of striving, As onward on our way we go With unknown things arising. School days will never be forgotten As the years go on unending, For we have placed them in our memories dear And are striving to keep ascending. So we must travel onward On the great unknown road, And look to God to help us To carry our burden and load. Now we give thanks to our teachers Who have guided us through the years, And helped us through the passing time To strive upward without fear. Class Poet, Lrnpa GILBERT. kk ok tok Class Song As we come to the end of our way, We are happy that we can say, We will ever abide, by the rules you have tried To teach us from day to day. We have struggled along through the years To train to go on without fears, But now that we part, There’s sadness at heart, As we say farewell to you here. We have tried to learn life’s golden rule; We have tried to be faithful in school; Our work here is done, we’ve had plenty fun, And now we must be on our way. May the years that lie before us Be filled with blessings and trust, And now as we go We want you to know We love and honor our school. O08 kk kk tok tok tak Class Prophecy Having finished my work at the hospital that cold day in January 1960, I returned to the Nurses’ home, and decided to relax by turning on the radio, getting in my easy chair, and forgetting the day’s hard work. The music was so soft and sweet I had almost gone to sleep when I heard the announcer say something about Union High School, Class of 1945. To be sure I was in- terested and listened attentively. Then in a most interest- ing manner, the announcer, Everette Houser, gave a brief report of each member of the class. “Charles Brown is a model for Stout Men’s Clothes in Field’s Department Store, Chicago. “Libby Scronce, Sue Tutherow, and Martha Elmore are a famous singing trio in a tour of the United States. “W. C. Scronce is the boxing champion in the United States. “Mary L. Wise has become renowned for her daily col- umn “Advice to the Rejected” in the New York Sun. “Wayne Scronce is chief truck driver for the Guess Brothers’ Transfer Company, owned and operated by Don- ald and Darold Guess, with headquarters at Cat Square. tk tok “Nelta Ward is a beautician in a leading shop in Denver. “Ray Seagle is a famous pilot, and has just completed a secret mission to China. “Hazel Sain is a physical education director at Duke. “Dorothy Sain is a famous figure in the political field. “Linda Gilbert is a popular comedienne in Hollywood. “Dorothy Massagee is a Recipe Expert with broadcasts from New York each day at 5:30 P. M. “Bill Leatherman is outstanding as a Navy Admiral. “Ruth Rudisill, with all her skill and energy, is a mis- sionary in China. “Mae Seagle and Melba Sain have become facous as expert millinerists. “Esmer Hudson is a Red Cross worker in England.” Would you listen! “Farrel Johnson leading farmer in Lincoln County. Catherine Warlick home demonstration agent there.” Good ole Lincoln County. With happy thoughts and pleasant memories of my friends and classmates, I went quietly to my bed.
