Class History In the year of 1938, a mixed group of anxious boys and girls from Union and Howard’s Creek entered the gates of Union High School. At first we were a little confused by the rules of high school. But gradually we became accustomed to the daily routine. In our freshman year our class numbered fifty-two, of these the fol- lowing officers were elected: President, Betty Yoder; Vice-President, Elizabeth Gilbert. As sophomores, thirteen girls were honored by being waitresses at the Junior-Senior banquet. Our officers for the year were: President, Clyde Hoyle; Vice-President, Lewis Rhyne; Secretary and Treasurer, Christine Grigg. The highlight of our Junior year was the Junior-Senior banquet given in honor of the Seniors. Then came our play, ‘For Pete’s Sake,” in which twelve pupils took part. Six of our class were iniated into the National Beta Club. Our class was honored by having three of its mem- bers on the debating team. They were the fifth Union team to win a trip to Chapel Hill. The following officers were elected: . President, Christine Grigg; Vice-President, Betty Yoder; Secretary, Velma Car- penter; Treasurer, Ruth Scronce. In our Senior year we began in 1941, all looking forward to gradu- ation. Our class now numbers thirty-one. The same three members are continuing their debating. Fifteen of our class were in the Senior play which was “Borrowed Money.” We were honored with a banquet given by the Junior Class at the parish house on April 8, 1942. Our gradu- ating exercises consisted of two programs: the baccalaureate sermon, April 19, and our commencement play, ““A Southern Rosary,” April 24. Historian, ELIZABETH GILBERT.
