Thesaurus llnion-Endicott SchooC 1200 East Main Street Endicott, New York 13760 VoCume 43 The yearbook staff would uke to dedicate the 1989 Thesaurus to the memory of MR. JOHN MILTZ Life! Most of us take it for granted. Each of us finds it difficult to comprehend a world without ourselves as an active, vibrant participant. Yel death comes to each of us. This past school year, the life of one of our teachers, John Miltz, came to a sudden end. It is difficult to imagine a world without him. Mr. Miltz was a kind man, a gentle man, a patient man, who chose to do something very special with his life. He chose to teach. He shared his knowledge and skills with literally hundreds of students and colleagues during his twenty-five years at UE. Each of us learned so much from him, and benefited from his decision to teach. Each of us who worked with him is richer because of his life. Each of us who knew' him will continue to smile at fond memories of him. Our magazine sale went better than any other class ahead of us. V were always very spirited and had a lot of U-E pride. Our last year at U-E has been a memorable one. Special thanks 1 Mrs. Yacko and Mrs. Marshall, our great advisors. Good luck to all the future classes of Union Endicott and all t! members of the class of ’89! President — Kellianne Archer Vice President — Tracie Link Secretary — Amber Platt Treasurer — Cathy Olshefshi by; Kellie Archie AND THE OLD SHALL DREAM DREAMS, AND THE YOUTH SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND OUR HOPES SHALL RISE UP TO THE SKY. WE MUST LIVE FOR TODAY, WE MUST BUILD FOR TOMORROW, GIVE US TIME, GIVE US STRENGTH, GIVE US LIFE. Childhood was for fantasies, for nursery rhymes and toys. The world was much too busy to understand small girls and boys. As I grew up, I came to learn that life was not a game, that heroes were just people that we called another name. Now I’m grown, the years have passed, I’ve come to understand. There are choices to be made and my life’s at my command. I cannot have a future 'til I embrace the past. I promise to pur- sue the challenge, time is going fast. Today’s the day, I take my stand, the fu- ture’s mine to hold. Commitments that I make today are dreams from days of old. I have to make the way fo generations come and go. I have to teach them what I’ve learned. So they will come to know. They were very dedicated and we managed to meet most of our deadlines. We made it our goal to get the yearbook here on time. This year we chose a more classy look with a few extra features. In the beginning of the book we used spot coloring on some of our color pages. Spot coloring is when you take a black and white photo and color areas of it with special paints. We also used some gold on our cover. We were all very excited when Taylor Publishing Company chose this year's THESAURUS to be used as an example for other schools. This is an honor and we are all very proud. The yearbook staff is also having a fund raiser this year to raise money for a field trip (after all, you guys deserve it!). 1 would like to thank the staff for working so hard, and meeting their deadlines. I would also like to thank Ms. Hamill (Ham) and Mrs. Lesko for all their help (and dinners at Ms. Hamill s when we worked late) and last, but not forgotten, I would like to thank Carol, my co-editor, for all her help and support. I couldn’t have done it without you guys. Good Luck next year. Editor-in-Chief Cheryl Knott 'nn n-Endicott High School 19 4 Vo! They also visit the Binghamton Psychiatric Center once a month and attend Kiwanis luncheons as representatives of U.E. They help out the school by collecting library cards, being guides for freshman orientation and selling basketball pro- grams at the games. They also hold Teacher Appreciation Day to show the school's appreciation to its teachers. The Tigereye Staff worked diligently this year to produce an interesting and informative newspaper. Countless hours were spent gathering and compiling information, editing, typing, and laying out the paper. It was a worthwhile and productive year for all of us. Last November, at the SUNY Journalism Workshop, the Ti- gereye won an award for best feature section and an honorable mention for best columns. Considering that this was our first year participating, it was an admirable accomplishment, 1 would like to thank my staff for dedicating so much of their time to the paper, all the writers and typists for making the paper possible, and especially Mr. Archer, my advisor, without whose f atience and caring tnere would be no Tigereye. He kept me aughing through those missed deadlines and tne general con- fusion. The valuable experience gained this year will never be forgotten. — Trade Link Student Government Once again in the 1988-89 school year has provided us with a very active Student Government. Our elected representatives and alternates were very busy with such activities as: dances, pep rallies, homecoming ceremonies, student exchanges, and other various school pride projects. The long awaited electronic board that Student Government worked so hard for last year was finally installed. Throughout the entire year Student Government has worked hard in improving school spirit. For example the Bonfire created an aura of enthusiasm before the big Vestal game. Once more Student Government has proven that the student body can make a difference in their school community. SADD educates students concerning the problem of drinking and driving and helps each stu- dent become aware of the alcohol problem as it exists on the local, state, and national levels. SADD has four goals. 1. To help eliminate the drunk driver and save lives. 2. To alert high school students to the dan- gers of drinking and driving. 3. To conduct community alcohol aware- ness programs. 4. To organize peer counseling programs to help students who may have concerns about alcohol. Mock Trial The New York State Bar Association sponsors the Mock Trial Program. An imaginary court case is given to all the schools who wish to participate. Each school's team learns both sides of the case — the plaintiffs and the de- fendant's. At a competition, only half of a team, for example defense, will compete against the plaintiffs side of the opposing team. Compe- tition takes place in the Binghamton Court House in front of a judge. This year's case involves an accusation by school officials to a student. The principal searched the student's locker for drugs. There is a pre-trial hearing to determine whether or not the locker was searched legally. Is the student right or was the principal in fact out of his jurisdiction? This is indeed unfortunate, since a team’s records can be very misleading at times, Such was the case of this Tiger Squad, which posted a record of 5 wins and 4 losses. First of ell, the record should show that this was easily the smallest Offensive end Defensive Line in U- E Football history This was also one of the youngest teams. The first half of the season was filled with trial and error, and a lot of frustration, Most fans and the media had written these Tigers off However, not their coaches . NOT EVER! The main thing here is that these young men WANTED TO LEARN WANTED to IMPROVE, and KEPT ON TRYING The record will also show that they were the only team in the league to score a major upset over heavily favored Binghamton It may well have been the only time in history that a Binghamton Team has ever been shut out. They finished like wild- nre . , finishing up with a convincing wTin in the mud and slop against archrival, Vestal; enabling them to share the Division 1 Championship with Binghamton and Horse heads. Yes,, this was the ' forgotten, team, However, ask four out of our five Division I opponents if they remember this team this team which SHUT OUT two of them, and rolled up 109 points while allowing but 13 points against all four combined. What the records cannot possibly show Is the DESIRE, the COURAGE, the BLOOD, SWEAT and TEARS expended by this fine squad. Let the records also show that this might have become the GUTSIEST, and SCRAPPIEST team in U-E’s proud football history. They are the true CHAMPIONS. We stand TALL and PROUD. The squad consisted of eleven seniors, and only three juniors. The Tiger, jennifer Lane, was always spirited and seen as one of the girls. This summer the girls attended Golden Valley Sports Camp, where they worked extremely hard coordinating cheers. The girls received several awards on the last day of camp. There were many hours spent practicing which eventually led to competition. Competition was held at Seton Catholic Central High School on November 11. The girls received second place in both the dance and cheering competition. The cheerleaders raised money every home game with 50-50 raffles and selling carnations in school. Love always Carla Paul, One year ago, 1 didn't know That you’d be mine someday I'd see you passing in the hall Without much attention to pay Then one day, to my surprise I saw you next to me I guess that it must have been fate, That we’d be together in Chem- istry As the days rolled on labs came and went And so did our old time friends We began to see that You and me Was the new thing around the bend Brother's” became our place to go And we spend many-a-nights Sharing dreams and inner thoughts, Under the warm dim lights As exams passed and summer be- gan, Both of us figured and knew, That along with the hot summer breezes, The warmth between us grew too. We spent our vacation hand in hand Together all the time It was then that I really knew That you, with a doubt, you were mine. The nights of walking, swim- ming, and talking We thought would never end Slowly began to fade away, With the cool incoming wind Though the seasons changed from hot to cold, The flame between us stayed, And both of us began to see That this love we shared would not fade. It's been almost a year since that very first day, When you and I began to be friends. Our love has and will continue to grow, And I doubt it will ever end. This year several guest speakers visited Mrs Elavsky's Principles in Marketing class . Two guest speakers that were asked to give a speech on entrepreneurship were Mr Card. Phil’s Chicken House owner, and Mr McCoy, owner of the No, 5 restaurant and other various establishments. Both men discussed how he got started in his business. They also gave the students some words of advice. Some of the ideas that were stressed were to continuously move forward, to learn from one's mistakes, and to always improve one's ideas. All of the speakers helped to give the students a look at the business world and what it entails. Mrs. Elavsky and her students would like to thank these people for taking time out of their busy schedules to talk to them. — Ioanna Seliga Co for Ice cream Sport Pair of Socks Actor Actress Pastime Cfo6 Season Band Book Su6ject Kerun Car NOT SO GREAT MOMENTS IN SPORTS Current Events August-Septemher 1988 Afternoon Edition An Arrow From The Sky A handful of demonstrators had picketed earlier outside the gate, “Stop the air shows, their posters demanded. “We're afraid, But inside Ramstein Air Base, the atmosphere was “like a huge folk festival,” said Hans Siedel who, together with 300,000 other spectators, gathered for the annual aerobatics display at the sprawling U.S. facility in West Germany.
