ย 5 โ€ข !โ–  !โ€ข UNION-ENDICOTT HIGH SCHOOL 1200 E. Main Street Endicott, New York 13760 l oยฃcu$te 42 SPORTS______ J 4 STUDENT LIFE ADVERTISEME A | Everything has its time, or so itโ€™s said. Thereโ€™s a time [to laugh and celebrate life, and there's a time to stop | and reflect on the mistakes we have made in the past. time to sit with friends and talk about the good times, and there's time to be alone and think about the I future. High School has its time in our life too. We all pass through its four year duration, trying to make the โ–  out of the time we have together here at U.E. Freshmen, we experienced a time of anxiety, a Itimeof getting familiar with the new bigger school, and of learning to handle the busting about being a ninth grader. We made new friends, joined clubs and sport teams, and began learning the ropes of how to survive four years of high school. During our Sophomore year, we began to fall in line with the upperclassmen. We felt more comfortable with the high school, and more importantly, we took on a new position of superiority with the new freshmen filling in our old shoes. Junior year was a time of great pressure. It was a year filled with standardized tests, harder courses, and the realization that we better get working if we want to graduate next year. It did have its benefits, though. As a Junior, you were finally an upperclassman, a standing that brings many privileges here at U.E. Finally, you become a Senior, the best position to be in. Senior year, โ€œthe year of study halls,โ€ brings forth a time of much freedom. At this point, you are both reflecting upon three years of fond memories at U.E. and looking forward into the future years with an- ticipation. You participate in the many special Senior Activities: the class trip, the banquet, and the prom. You have successfully made it through four years of high school and are ready to graduate into the real world. Though there is some sadness and anxiety, there are so many reasons to celebrate, because Seniors, this is our time! As our Senior year draws to a close, the Class of 1988 would like to thank the faculty, staff, our parents and everyone else involved in making our high school days what they were. Best of luck to the future seniors and all of their endeavors. Always remember as we close out the year: You never fail until you stop trying. Best wishes to you all! โ€” Terry McGuinness Over the past four years the Class of '88 has held many fund raisers to raise money for our senior activities. We have sold photo buttons, hotdogs, and seat cushions. We have sponsored dances such as the Snow Ball, and sold magazine subscriptions. The money raised is used to help pay for the prom and the senior banquet. President V. President Secretary Treasurer Terry McGuinness T. R. The newspaper itself expanded to sixteen pages, the largest size ever for an edition of the TIGEREYE. Many students contributed articles for the paper; this made the newspaper encompass a wide variety of articles about studentsโ€™ interests. Five issues, each having a special quality, were published during the 1987-1988 school year. As editor-in-chief, I would like to personally thank all the students who contributed articles to the TIGEREYE. A big thank you goes to all the section editors, typers, photographers, and production staff for helping make each edition a success. This year the approximately 110 members did over 2000 hours of community service. Activities for the school included being guides at the freshman orientation, Open House, and the 1967 Class Reunion, picking up library cards, having a โ€œTeacher and Staff Appreciation Day, and selling basketball programs. Among community service programs were People For Community (doing chores for the elderly), visiting the Binghamton Psychiatric Center each month, working at the Christmas Parade and helping at the Sunshine Olympics in June. Also, the club sent money and gifts to several charities from Key Club sponsored activities such as CROP CHOW walk, an MDA Dance-a-thon, ringing bells for the Volunteers of America during the Christmas season, and the Thanksgiving Fund Drive. Our elected representatives and alternates were very busy with such activities as: Air Band Dance Contests, Pep Rallies, Homecoming ceremonies, school pride projects aimed at reducing vandalism, student exchanges, and school spirit raffles. ยฃ In addition to these many activities, student government also undertook some new and challenging projects. The long awaited comeback of the Bonfire was extremely successful. The first floor cafeteria was repainted with school colors. A beautiful tiger highlighted the theme of school pride, and plans for a Battle of the Bands, where student musicians compete to win prizes, added enthusiasm for school pride. Throughout the entire, year, student government has worked hard on improving student staff relationships and preserving student rights. Student government can be a powerful voice at U-E as long as students continue to voice their opinions and get involved in improving our school. a u e (t t โ€” Julie Kuhns Student Government is one of the largest clubs at U-E, with approximately 120 members. Its objective is to make its cause publicly known through posters, cards, and other projects. Our main project this year was selling โ€œbandits. These are colorful bracelets used to signify who was aware of the drunk driving problem and who is willing to fight it. Hopefully, next year we will be able to carry out more projects encouraging students against drunk driving, but we can only do this with the support of the students and faculty, so please join us! Advisor: Miss Diane Fitch 142 The New York State Bar Association sponsors the Mock Trial Program. An imaginary court case is given to all the schools who wish to participate. Each school's team learns both sides of the case โ€” the plaintiffs and the defendant's. At a competition, only half of a team, for example the defense, will compete against the plaintiffโ€™s side of the opposing team. Competition takes place in the Binghamton Court House in front of a real judge. The case this year involves a public demonstration protesting the county jail's conditions. Spectators gathered at the site and began to throw debris and shout threats at the demonstrators. A police lieutenant asked the leader of the demonstration to lead her people out of the area. It is a plan whereby business students may receive Regents credit for actual work experience in approved jobs that are related to a course in which they are enrolled. Students who maintain satisfactory grades and earn a satisfactory job performance rating by their employer and supervising teacher may receive credit. One half unit is earned for working each 150 hours up to a maximum of two credits per year for 600 or more hours. The group meets periodically with the advisor, Mr. Bill Dupkanick, in school. Once, near the beginning of each school year, the co-ops and their parents guardians meet with business teachers and school personnel to have an orientation meeting. This year's U-E Varsity soccer team, coached by Rick Materese, achieved a 16-5-2 record. After a slow start, the team reached the STAC Championship for the first time but came up short in an effort to beat the defending Golden Bears. U-E later avenged that loss by beating Vestal 2- 1 for the Section IV title. This was the first time ever that U-E won the title. The team, headed by captains Adam Linko, John Moretin, Lee Shamp, and Mark Vaughn, reached the N.Y. State semi-finals before ending the winningest season U-E soccer has ever had. The team ended up ranked 20th in the state. We hope that next year's team can go one step further and capture the state title. Congratulations on an outstanding year! โ€” Terry McGuinness 181 Saccen This season was a unique one for the Girls Varsity Soccer Team. This summer, the girls went to cheerleading camp at Pine Forest where many hours were spent coordinating cheers, jumps, and stunts. The hours spent practicing every day paid off for the girls. They placed second in a competition in Elmira against eleven other squads. The cheerleaders raised money through bake sales, candy sales, and selling carnations.
