While the tiger stands defender of the Orange and the Black. Thro' the four long years of high school midst the scenes we know so well. As the mystic charm of knowledge we vainly seek to spell. Or win athletic vict'ries on the football held or track Still we work for dear old U-E and the Orange and the Black. When the cares of life o'er take us mingling fast our locks w ith gray. Should our dearest hopes betray us false fortune fade away Still we banish care and sadness as we turn our memories back And recall those days of gladness 'neath the Orange and the Black. By the rolling Susquehanna, near the playing field so green. Stands the playing old Alma Mater like a proud old gracious queen And forever we remember as we pass — and then look back. That the tiger stands defender of the Orange and the Black. TABLE OF CONTENTS seniors.........................14 A We've only just begun to live New day promises A kiss for luck And we're on our way b We start out walking and learn to run And when the evening comes We smile SgfgS 10 So much of life ahead We'll find a place Where there's room to grow And yet we've just begun 13 JV' X SI jrA seniors The Class of 1979 is the first class to attend Union Endicott High School for four years. During this time they have been very active preparing for their senior year. Car washes, candy sales, and magazine drives were a major part of their fund raising activities. The class held a donkey basketball game in their sopho- more year, and volunteered at WSKG public television. The Senior Banquet was held on May 12, 1979 at the Holiday Inn Arena. Music was provided by Brotherhood. The Prom was held in the Broome County Veteran's Memorial Arena on June 2, 1979. Music was provided by Jon David's Mood. Good luck in the future to all 1979 graduates. Off I go . . . to be who I am, doing the things I want to do. Alive and glowing, secure in knowing nothing can stop me now. 16 18 Srmurs Seniors 19 Seniof 21 Christopher Chechatkd Srnror r 29 Sermon 47 Scnrcir i 43 Senior 4V Dianne Romano S nn rs S hO Seniors Seniors ot Pictured Randy Alapeck Tonv Laprm o Anthony Ancillotti Joseph Mirra Ellen Benardes Elaina Moreau Diane Bikos Carla Murray Paul Blazev Kathleen Norton Thi Bach Cai loan Mark Novak Ronald Carey Jeffrey Oliveira Joseph Carmine David Ondecko Victor Cimini Daniel Paradis Lori Coney Jean Parker James Cron Donald Pavne Michael Curylo Brenda Peabody Gregory Dialerio lisa Petrilli Kevin Dietrichsen |ohn Pipik Mark Dilorenzo Krista Pulz Mary Dro dek Christopher Quartararo Bryan Duffy Melodv Renfro lisa faivre Maureen Robinson Ann Marie Gale Patrick Ryan |ohn Ghinger Paul Santodonato Mark Halliday Richard Schopf Paul Harper Paul Sick Nancy Hartmann Dennis Spangenburg Robert Hedden Theresa Spear Kurt Heggelke Paul Stankiewic David Henry Arthur Tilts Ross Hoag Steve Tokos Paul Howard Kevin Tye Imda Huntington Gilbert Vandling Raymond Johnson Thomas Vager Paul Juracek Rebecca Vearick Audrey Karner David Zeigler William Kellogg Joseph eilman Daryl laBarron 1979 CLASS NOTABLES PETTIEST Pal Wiley HANDSOMEST: Brian Walsh CUTEST: Brenda Barlleson — Brian Walsh FRIENDLIEST: Jeanne Studer — Medard Korhar QUIETEST: Cindy Barlholomay — Jeff Bennett BROWN NOSER: Lousia Fabrizio— |ohn Bernardo WITTIEST: Karen Hand — Tom Darpino FOGGIEST Charmaine Peterson — Dan Chwalow, Greg Ulsh NIGHT OWL: Robin Wyatt — )im Pitman, Tom Wargo MIRROR GAZER Michelle Marsh, Beth Skoniecki — Darren Halgas BEST ALL AROUND Barb Bock — Dave Demer, Bill Nolis, Brian Walsh BEST DRESSED judy Thompson — Bob Wall BEST NATURED: Jeanne Studer— Bob Mastro BEST FIGURE Sue Perechmsky, Charmaine Peterson BEST PHYSIQUE: Dave Demer, Vince Kovalick CLASS ARTIST: Betsy Freedman — Tom O'Brien CLASS ATHLETE Cathy Holobosky — Dave Wolf CLASS BRAIN: Ann Gorski — Ron Fisher CLASS CLOWN: Karen Hand — The Team of Mike George and Joe Hartnett CLASS COUPL ES: Lone LeDrew and Vince Spellane, Jeanne Studer and John Cheer CLASS FLIRT: Lisa Clemente — Vince Kovalick CLASS GIANT Kathy Mott — Kevin Lane CLASS MIDGET: Ginny Mathias— Tom Cornell CLASS MOD: Mary Kay Sinicki — Bill Heath CLASS MUSICIAN: Dana Dellapenta — loe Chernak CLASS ROW DIE Karen Hand — George Kretzmer MOST ACTIVE Lynn Svercek, Dee Dee Warnes— Bill Nolis MOST ARGUMENTIVE: Michelle Masiowski —Gil Vandling MOST FUN TO BE AROUND: Karen Hand, Heather McClain — Dave Demer MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED: Ann Gorski — Ron Fisher MOST POPULAR Barb Bock — Brian Walsh MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT Dana Dellapenta — Bill Nolis MOST STUDIOUS Ann Gorski — Ron Fisher MOST TALKATIVE Michelle Masiowski — Benny DiLorenzo, Dave Durdon Seniw Seniors b9 BACK ROW, STANDING LEFT TO RIGHT Mr, Gregory Saraceno, Mr, Charles Lamb, Mr Michael Kopcho, Mr George Butz SITTING, LIFT TO RIGHT Mr David Dopp, Mrs Patric id Waysan, Mr. Arthur Oversirom b. The band began this season minus I heir director Dr loseph Scagnoli, and previous assistam, Mr Hank Slechta, tilled his shoes. Mr. Slechta was aided by Mr, Joe Zettler, a former stu- dent teacher at U-E from Ithaca College. As always the band pul on splendid performances at both home and away foot- ball games. In addition. The Pride made two appearances at professional football games: one in Boston for the New Eng- land Patriots, and the other, for the eighth consecutive year, in Buffalo for the Bills. The band gave their support at the school pep rallies and concluded the season by marching in the annual Christmas Parade, Having a new director was a big change, but the band still proved to be the Pride of U-E High. a Mr Slethia — Funny, 1 though! CAMERA DAY 1 lJH At livilies. sports VARSITY FOOTBALL 204 Another unique feature of this team was its limited schedule. Strapped by our league's structure, which forced us to look for two outside games, we could not find anyone, not only in the entire state, but in the entire Northeast who would play us in the opener. Therefore, with only 8 games, instead of 9 like everyone else, this team was fighting the clock from the moment we hit the field — one week later than the rest It is for this reason that these young men have made us burst with pride. And, perhaps the best part is the fact that 55 of them return next year to give us the larg- est nucleus of experience we've ever had. Obviously, the Tiger is pointing to 1979 with eager antici- pation. We intend to give no quar- ter, and have three goals; To have an undefeated season, to be STAC Champions and to be Number One Rank in New York Stale. Considering the almost total lack of experience at every Of fen sive and Defensive position, and considering what this team, pre- dominently underclassmen, achieved as it rolled up 285 points, averaging almost 3516 points per game, while yielding only 89 points to its opponents, almost 11 points per game, forces us to call it probably the most coachable team we've ever had during our 22 year tenure. Who would ever have dreamed way back under a hot and humid August sun that this team would accomplish what they have accomplished — and they accomplished it with CLASS ! We have always felt that disre- garding the make up of any squad in terms of the number and or quality of underclassmen, the leadership and success of any squad must come from its Seniors. Whal makes this particular group of Seniors so unique is that they comprise the fewest of any group of Seniors we've ever had. They have provided their Coaches, teammates and fans with out- standing dedication and leader- ship. Angie Walsh, Cathy Bird, Becky Mencheth, (ill Collison Bob Wurtenberg, Unior-Endicotl High School's tireless athletic director and former basketball coach, died at Wilson Memorial Hospital December 31, 1978 after a recurring bout with cancer, Wurtenberg, who was honored as 1978 Athletic Director of the Year by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, was a resident of Newark Valley where he graduated from high school in 1941. The 54-year-old Wurtenberg was troubled by the tragic illness several years ago, but it was temporarily arrested, allowing him to return to his U-E office. But he weakened over the past summer and missed part of the1 fall school season. Despite the fact that he was forced to miss the entire school week prior to the Nov. 11 home football game with Vestal — the U-E athletic department's biggest bi-annual endeavor — he returned to his office for a mght long shift on Nov. 10 to oversee prepa- rations. He never returned to work after that night. U-E track coach Mike Miller called Wur- tenberg a coaches athletic director. His door was always open to the coaches, said Miller, who was hired by Wurtenberg as track coach. Coaches in other schools are envious of the U-E coaches because of the relationship Wurtenberg had with staff. We'll miss him terribly. Head football coach at U-E, Fran Angeline, edToe th sentiment o hi coadTing He was a tireless worker for the good of all, said the veteran coach He was never too busy for anybody or anything no matter how small or large it might be, Big Wurt, as he was known because of his tall lanky stature, came to the U-E school district in 1957 after coaching four sports in olher school districts. He was head soccer, baseEiall and basket- ball coach at Cowanesnue Valley (Pa.) Joint Schools for two years, head football, base- ball and freshman basketball coach at South Huntington (L.l.) High School for two years and football assistant at Ithaca College for one year. Wurtenberg was employed at Cowan- esque Valley from 1941-51 after attending Seton Hall and graduating from Ithaca Col- lege with a degree in physical education before going on to South Huntington. It was after the 1954 Long Island season that Wurtenberg took up the tools of the plumbing trade. In April, 1957, after Vh years as a U-t substitute, Wurtenberg returned to full-time teaching. In 1966, after compiling a six-year varsity basketball record of 57-61, Wurtenberg was named director of health, physical educa- tion and recreation for the U-E school dis- trict succeeding Henry M. Vetter. Wurtenberg is survived by his wife, Mrs. Doris Wurtenberg, two daughters and three sons. ____________________________________________) Ibl Sports In January, 1978, Mr Wurtenberg was named New York Athletic Director of the Year by the New York State Council of Administrators of Health, Physical [due ation and Rec reation In my letter of reference to the State Council, I wrote the following Bob thinks nothing of putting in an eighty or ninety hour week, if this is required in order to make a school activity successful. Bob Wurtenberg has demonstrated in innumerable1 ways that he is an efficient organizer, an outstanding teacher, a very competent supervisor, and an efficient manager. Yet, he is warm, gentle, sensitive and a very compassionate human being He is, indeed, a credit to the teaching pro- fession. t am both pleased and proud that I have had the privilege1 of working closely with Bob in the Union-Endicolt Central School District. Through his leadership, Bob Wurtenberg has made significant contributions to the development of pro- grams m physical education and mterscholastic ath- letics in the UE School District, in the Southern Tier Athletics Conference (STAC), in the sec tion, region, and state, William A. Zimmerman Superintendent of Sc hools Mr Wurtenberg was truly dedicated to U-F, the com- munity and his profession No job was too big for him to handle and no person was too small to work with. George ) Cardone Principal Endicott sc hool system lost a fine professional staff member and i lost a Good Friend in the passing away of Robert Wurtenberg. Bob seemed to be an untiring worker and could always be seen at athletic events pacing the sidelines. He worked long hours, but always took the time to stop and visit; he never tried to put anyone off. Bob was not just a professional colleague of mine, but also a once a week golf partner for eight years. He was a true friend to me and I miss him as many others do The comments Endow say a lot about the1 way Bob Wurtenberg did his daily tasks and lac ed life. SERVICE Do all the1 good you can By all the means you can In all the ways you c an In all the plat es you c an At all the1 times you can To all the people you c an As long as ever you can author unknown Joseph N. Marzo I had known Bob Wurtenberg since our high school days in the late 19i0's, I then became more closely associated with him as member of the U-E staff — as teachers ancf coaches I can say in all sincerity that I do not know of another individual who gave his time so readily for the education of young people. Bob Wurtenberg was truly a dedicated man and one who is, and will be, missed by all of us. Vito N. Popelka Bob Wurtenberg did much more than was neces- sary in his position as Di rent or ol Athletics. He often would use his own time and his own equipment to do jobs not really his to do. When most other Athletic Directors would only concern themselves with making schedules for their athletic teams, Mr. Wurtenberg would work with his coaches to try to always improve the athletic situa- tion at U-E. C. Tarricone I will always remember Bob Wurtenberg who worked to promote the. growth of Girls Sports in our school, in our league, and in our section, ancf in the state by making us accountable for our progress. He often told me that we could have what we wanted as long as it was for our best interest and not because everybody else does ' Our U-E teams (girls) are always aggressive and play to win as well as to have fun. Bob always emphasized that fun is as much a part of playing as the competition itself. Welcome to the Future Class Rings . . . Take a drug and you'll be smarter, live longer, even change the sex of your unborn child These are just a few of the changes anticipated by participants in the latest McGraw- Hill survey of 200 industrial firms and government and private researchers in 12 major fields The survey of experts in fields ranging from medicine to transportation to manu- facturing is conducted every three years Ihe big news this year is that the futuristic, science-(tction life isn't so far off. If you've ever quibbled with the basic equipment you were born with, it won’t tie long before you'll be able to do something about it, medical experts say They predict drugs that can permanently raise your IQ will be in widespread use in 15 years Around that time, they say scientific breakthroughs will enable you to shed unwanted pounds effortlessly and even control the sex of your unborn child then, too, they predict that by Ihe turn of the century, life expectancy will reach TOO years, that there will be a cure for cancer — and a drug which, taken over a long period of lime, prevents it. The medical experts also foresee artificial eyesight for Ihe blind, artificial growth of new limbs and even an artificial form of primitive life But you needn't wad that long for other startling advances. In the 1980’s, they say, ultrasonics wifi enable the control of pain and detect brain tumors, electronic impulses will heal bone fractures, and there will even be a substitute for blood The clothes of the future won't be the same either Seven years from now, textile experts say, one-piece molded garments will be the rage and fabrics will respond to temperature changes By the turn of the century, they predict, you’ll be able to select a dress or sun that will change color Not that you'll have to worry about the elements In the 1980's, say scientists, plastic domes will protect cities on land and in the sea trom pollution and the weather; scientists will be predicting earthquakes; and, maybe most remarkable of all, weathermen will present accurate JO-day weather forecasts Traffic jams, too, will be a thing of the past, the transportation experts say. Bv W . they sav. you'll be able to get into your electric car, contact your office by portable telephone and breeze down an automated highway By the turn of the ten tury, your car will be servic e Iree and accident-proof Before long — maybe even this year — you won't even have to walk You'll just step on a moving sidewalk outside your door Welcome to life in Ihe not so distant luture.
