Thesaurus 1974-75 Union Endicott High School 1200 East Main Street Endicott, New York Volume 29 Dedication Michelle McLain October 25, 1956—July 10, 1974 Many people wrote of their affection and respect for their friend, Mickey McLain. The following paragraph, written by a U-E graduate, Larry Mancini, seemed to sum up their feelings well: I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith ... (II Timothy 4:7). These ivords speak so much how Mickey lived her life. Towards die last days of her life she put forth an attitude of love, hope, and faith in the God for whom she lived. Mickey was a special kind of person, always thinking of others before she thought of herself. A great friend of mine, she often was a help to me when I needed someone most. Many people will miss Mickey, I miss her a lot. However, I have a great joy that someday I will meet her in Heaven. 2 Table of Contents 14 -J SI r! s 4 1 71 -limints 10 Si-n 220 Staff Editor-in-Chief.............................................}oni Sloma Assistant Editor ..................................... . - Stephanie Seelman Copy Editor ..................................... ..........B«b Strollo Assistant Copy Editor....................................... TTiis season really started in the minds and hearts of every underclassman and the coaches a Jong time ago—to be more specific, it began immediately after the last whistle had blown, ending the U-E vs Vestal Game in 1973, which brought the curtain down on a most frustrating season for the Tigers, in which we won only 3 games, and lost 6. When the coaches began holding their staff meetings in the summer, their major concern, naturally, was lack of experience, especially on offense, with only 2 starters returning, and lack of die. Almost everyone around here had written U-E off before the season began. However, what they could not have possibly known was one thing of which the Coach was certain: you canft keep a whipped T1GEE down for long- Under the steadying force, the constant exhortations, the leadership of Coach Fran Angeline and Captain Bob Veruto, it was obvious, after just a few weeks of pre-season practice beneath a hot August and early September sun, that the fine parts of an awesome machine were meshing. In fact, after just three weeks of practice, Coach Angeline made this observation: ”Fd say that at this stage we are very pleased with the progress. We have more experience on defense and the offense has been coming right along- We may surprise a few people and return to power-11 On Saturday night, September 21, our TIGERS proved that they were back , by coming from behind to beat an Ithaca Team 27-7, an Ithaca Team which boasted approximately 95 of their players returning from their 1973 Team which had beaten us. This was our first win over Ithaca in 8 years. The 2 most important ingredients in a WINNER were really fortified on that evening—POISE and CONFIDENCE, and it looked as if big things were going to happen- The rest is history. The progress of this relatively green” team was almost phenomenal, not only from day to day, but week to week- We were picked as underdogs against 4 teams, as the season progressed, and in these 4 games posted scores of: 27-7 (Ithaca), 47-22 (Johnson City), 50-6 (Homer), 8-8 (Vestal), while averaging almost 40 points per game to finish an UNDEFEATED SEASON and SHARING the CHAMPIONSHIP with VESTAL, in a finale, which was report- edly viewed by almost 100, 000 fans (both live and on TV), and which will probably go down in history as the greatest high school game ever witnessed in these parts. TTiis was Coach Angeline1® second Undefeated Season, and fourth championship. Of these young men, especially the 19 SENIORS on the squad, Coach Angeline has summed it all up by saying: No group of young men, along with their coach, has ever been through so many frustrations, trials, and tribula- tions, as this 1974 group. No group of young men has ever had such a lack of size and experience- No group of young men has ever given so much themselves, has ever worked or played any harder, has ever been more coura- geous, more dedicated, than this group. They have believed in themselves and their coach, whereas others began doubting last year- They have smashed every existing U-E and several LEAGUE records in history - . but the most important RECORD they have broken, the INTANGIBLE ONE that will not show in the books, is . . . their PRIDE! We have never been more PROUD of a group than of these FINE YOUNG MEN.” 41 J.V. Football wins the STAC Champion Title. Rand Barium, Liz Beeman, Glen Gabriel, Billie Sue Bird, One of the offerings of the Business Education Department is the Co-operative Office Skills Program. There were 25 UEHS seniors working half days at either IBM or the Broome Coun- ty Nursing Home this year. Stu- dents had to be enrolled in either Shorthand 2, Office practice 2, or Accounting 2 to be eligible for the program. Co-ops gained valuable experience, earned one credit for working and earned hundreds of dollars, half of which had to be banked so that the students could learn money management. In its third year now, the IBM Work Experience Program affords selected U-E senior boys the opportunity of learning about the world of work as co- op employees of this large cor- poration. Every spring, appli- cations for this program are ac- cepted and candidates are se- lected on the basis of their high school academic performance and their letters of recommen- dation. Boys selected to repre- sent our school are then sent to IBM for interviews—after which the final selection is made. This year we have ten boys in the program. They work half days and attend classes here the re- maining half. Their experiences through the year, they will ad- mit, are varied and quite rewarding. Actually, two members started preparing for their roles during the sum- mer of 1973—Joni Sloma, Editor-in-Chief and Gina Nicholas, Assistant Copy Editor, attended a conference on yearbooking in Rochester. Much planning went into the preparation of each in- dividual part of the THESAURUS by Joni and her advisors, Mrs. Ann Lewis and Mr. Joseph Rose. Senior pictures were taken during the summer; underclassmen pictures, sport pictures, activity pictures, and candid pictures were taken during the school year. Then the task of sifting through piles of pictures for the best ones began. Putting captions under the pictures took the imagination and skill of Joni Sloma, Gina Nicholas, and Bart Strollo. Barb Machalek, Jennifer Battle, Ralph Signorelli, and Debbie Powell spent hours count- ing money, checking off pictures, and posting payments to students1 accounts. It has been estimated that our yearbooks takes 3, 200 staff hours to produce hut many members agree that it takes much more. The majority of this work falls on the shoulders of the Editor-in- Chief, the Treasurer, and the student photogra- phers. The current yearbook has a budget of ap- proximately $8, 000. Yearbook advisor, Mrs. Lewis, and Photography advisor, Mr. Rose, contributed support, effort, and guidance to the entire yearbook staff. Photographer, Ken Curatolo, care- fully selects acceptable negatives to print for the yearbook. John Adams Jacqueline Albano As the school year closes, we, the Senior Class of 1975, reflect upon the various goals which we have pursued throughout our high school years. Both individually and collectively, we have sought to improve ourselves in the various fields which have helped to make us a functional part of society. Athletics, academics, clubs, and various other activities were an integral part of this preparation. Despite die confusion of the building process which forced us to be separated in our Junior year, we were once again united in this our Senior year—the most signifi- cant of all. And now we must go forth into society, realizing fully well that our past endeavors will serve as guide- lines for the future experiences which we will encounter on the un- certain horizons before us . . . To most students, the academ- ics wouldn't be missed, but our class, the club meetings, pep rallies, and sports ac- tivities will hold a special place in our mem ories. We can save all of the programs, newsclippings, and momentos that we've collected throughout our three years here, but we must accept that we can never relive our experiences at U-E and we may never pass this way again1'. --Editor, JoniSIoma 225 Kopec, Karla 84,115,117 Kopre, Kevin 102 ♦Koperwas, Debbie 126,182,202 Koperwas, Shirley 126,182 Korl .ir, Mrs. If ♦Kotasek, Jodie 118,126,150, 145,182 Kotosek, Kim 84 Kotasck, Mark 84 Kotasck, Richard 102 Kotrch, David 45, 72, 84 Koval chick, Natasha 84 Kovaliqk, Lisa (Freshman) 64, 65 Kovarik, Debbie 65,105 Kovarik, William 103 Kozecki, Chris 103 Koiuboski, MissL. 18 Kratochvil, Michael 103,115 Kraus, Cary 182 Krmenec, James 36,84,112 Krmeoec, Mask 72,103 Krol, Steven 103 ♦Kropat, Chris 124,182 ♦Krouse, Cynthia 183 Krouse , Matthew 84 ♦Kubik, Joseph 54,55,183 ♦Kuchinski, Ronald 183 Kugler, Debbie 103 Kukclka, James 62,103,107 ♦Kukclka, Lisa 115, 117,128, 129,134,183 ♦Kulasza, Barbara 183 Kunsman, Robert 103 ♦Kunsman, Wayne 38,134,183 Kurkoski, Susan 103, 129,1 38 Kushner, James 103,1 31 Kushner, Kristine 84,128 Kurio, Mary Ann 103 L LaBarbera, Antonina 84,115 La Course, Connie 103,118 La Course, Thomas 102,103,129 La Course, Yonnic 85, 90,122 La Due Carlton 85 ♦Lainhart, Ema 183 Lambert, Donald 49, 85 Land, Ramona 85 ♦Lane, Maribeth 184 Lane, Nancy 103 Lane, Thomas Lanois, Carol 103,115 Laskowski, Tammy 103,118, 119.129.140 Laskowski, Thomas 49, 103 Laud, Ramona 85 ♦Laudato, Christopher 184 Laudig, Yvonne 103,142 Laughney, Sharon 103,129 ♦Lavellc, Kathleen 184 I.avelle, Paul 104 Lav in, Kevin 36,85 Lavo, James 104 Lawton, Pamela 85, 128, 1 34, 138 Lawton, Mr W, 33, J 36 LoClair, Hiraheth 104, 129,1 34, Lee, Richard 4 3,85 ♦Leftrheck, Charles 184 ♦Leonard, Donald 184 Lc| iiy, George Lep-iy, Mark Lcrche, Daniel 85, 112,11 5 Leri, Renee' 1(M tLi-sko, Karen 184 Lcsko, Mike 104 Lesko, Nancy 85 Lessler, Aim Marie 85 Lesysliyn, Robot 104,140 Lewis, Mrs. A. 19,144 Liclttta , Mr. A. 24 ♦Likewise, Jeanne 184 Lindsey, Brenda 85 ♦Lints, Tam! 129,185 ♦Lints, Thomas 185 Lippman, Mr. M, 21 Little, Mrs. R. 27 Litts, Daniel 47,140, 185 Litts, Susan 50,51,1 CM, 129, 114.140 ♦Livingston, Cynthia 116,117, 143,185 ♦Lockwood, William 112,115, 185 Locfftcr, Judy 104 ♦Logan, Michael 38,140,185 Loidice, Sabino ♦toiler, William 38,140,185 Longo, Barbara 85 Longo, Michael 38,140 Longo, Robert Loparoco, Lora 85 ♦Lord, Barbara 52, 125, 137, 140.186 Lord, David 85,112,115 Lord, Judith-Ellen 104,142 Lord, Karen 112, 115,186 Lorenz, Karen (Freshman) 53 Loso, Mr. W. 28 ♦Lounsberry, Cheryl 112,115, 117, 186 ♦Love, Daniel 186 Loy, Richard 85 Loy, Robert 104 Loiri, Robert 104, IIS, 125 Lorzi, Roberta 104 Luchetta, Russell 85 Lucia, Mr. 43 Ludka, Patricia 85 Lukovich, Mark 85 Lyman, Linda (Freshman) 53 Lyman, Gordon 53, 104 Lynch, Michael 85 ♦Lynch, Richard 1 31, 186 Lynch, Timothy 104,131 Lyon, David 85 M MacBeth, Kirk 104 ♦Machalck, Barbara 125,129, 145.160.186 Mackechnie, Penny 85 ♦Margarglc, Steven 186 Maghec, Mike Marcone, Anthony Main, Timothy 85 Maione, Tony 104 ♦Majcrnik, Joseph 186 Majka, Joseph 104,139 Majka, Martin 85 Majka, Richard 104 Majka, Thomas 8S ♦Malatkcy, Tony 186 Maliwacki, John 187 Maliwacki, Michael 49, 85 Mallozri, Camille 85 Mancini, Mark 43,72,85 Manger, Michael 85 Mangini, Gus 85 Mangini, Jamie 104 Manker, Mrs. T. 2l ♦Marca, Susan 118,187 Marchetti, John 187 ♦Marcii, Ron 175,187 Marga rone, David 85,129,134 ♦Margarone, Paul ♦Mariani, Susan 187 Mariano, Steven 36, 37, 104 MarineUo, Mary Loti 85 ♦Maikovik, Debra Marrongclli, Cathy (Freshman) 53 ♦Marrongelli, Sal 187 Marshall, Rcnc 85 Marshall, Mrs. E. 29,53 M a is hall, Thomas Martin, Kathleen 86,125 Martin, Kerri 86 ♦Martin, Scott 187 ♦Marti nak, Steven 190 Maizo, Mr. 16 Marzocca, Maria 94, 104,115, 117,129,138,145 Mastro, Richard 104 Mastro, William 38,104 Mastroianni, Natalie 86,138 MATH LETES 132 ♦Mattcsoi Vicki 118,130,190 Matthews, Debbie 86,115,117, 138 May, Barbara 86,125 ♦Maye, Cheryl 190 McAndrcw, James 56,86 McAndrew, Michael 49, 58, 86 McClain, Carla 104, 129,1 34 McClain, Mark 86,134 ♦McClain, Michelle (Dedication) 2 McClain, Mis. 21 McFarland, Stui 86 McGowan, Robert 104 ♦McIntyre, £11011112,115,134, 190 McIntyre, Jeffery 86, 112,115 McKurc, Donald 86 ♦McKensie, Mary 190 ♦McKensic, Nancy 125, 127, 190 McKitrick, Eugene 104 McLean, Marie 51,86 McManus, David 38,104 McManus, Mitchell 86 McMullen, Kevin 86 McMuUin, Ms. C. 28 McVuadc, Chuck 86 ♦Me Van non, Debra 129, 190 MeV.innon, Joanne 86 Meager, Linda 105,115,117, 129 Mclia, Michael 86,1 34 ♦Melmer, John 190 ♦Melrose, Jayne 1 IS, 117,1 34, 191 ♦Mcnhcnnctt, Edward 125 Merrtam, Mr. J. 19 ♦Merritt, Judy 115,117,19! We can see that our lives have changed, Certain things must go but some remain. And things remembered never really die. We can’t go back into the past, So turn and look diis way, Sunshine smiles on the dawn of a brand new day. As the sun melts down upon the mountain. Cotton candy clouds have streaked the skies.
