THESAURUS Union-Endicott High School 1200 East Main Street Endicott, New York Volume XXV And the leaves that were green turned brown 2 . . . so we came back. ABOVE LEFT: Our annual congregation in front of the school. ABOVE RIGHT TOP: The summer emptied homerooms . . . ABOVE RIGHT: . . . were once again occupied. TOP: The line for food in the clubhouse grew longer and longer and longer .... ABOVE: Chess games were played without end in the National Honor Society room. 4 For most of us it was the same old story . . . TOP: Studying in the library was a popular pastime. ABOVE LEFT: Mr. Cardone's office was a well-known stop on the way to detention. ABOVE: Jan Diamond pondered the thought of another year in a 313 study hall. . . . with a few slight changes. ABOVE: We started the year with a new regime in Student Government, led by newly-elected President Rob Thomas. TOP: Wow! A new chair in the Honor Society Room. We soon established a routine. ABOVE RIGHT: Fire drills were a welcome interruption, as the exercise cleared our minds. RIGHT: Confusion played an important part in school life, especially in the morning at our lockers. ABOVE: Sooner or later, EVERYONE visited the Guidance Office. TOP: Tony DeGregorio thought. LEFT: Angela Bon- ventre rested. ABOVE: Darcy Miner relaxed. Then the pace began to wear us down. However, there were diversions . . . ABOVE: Victor Barba relieves those fourth period hunger pains. RIGHT: Pep assemblies provided a spirited ending to a tiring day. 10 . . . and the days passed quickly. LEFT: Cindv Holt and iVtark Rought passed the time talking with Kathy Williams. 11 Thro’ the four long years of High School Midst the scenes we know so well, As the mystic charm of knowledge We vainly seek to spell, Or win athletic vict'ries On the football field or tracK. Still we work for dear old U-E And the Orange and the Black. When the cares of life o'er take us, Mingling fast our locks with gray Should our dearest hopes betray us, False Fortune fade away. Still we banish care and sadness As we turn our memories back, recall those days of gladness the Orange and the Black . Mr. Clayton primarily assisted Mr. Popelka and Mr. Cardone with atten- dance and disciplinary problems. ABOVE: Mr. Popelka -- Prin- cipal; ABOVE RIGHT: Mr. Cardone -- Vice Principal; RIGHT: Mr. Clayton. QQ)mOOlOO 'J TOP RIGHT: Dr. Zimmerman, Superintendent of Schools; TOP LEFT: Mr. Powell, Ass't. English Department Course choices offered in Senior English. Semester courses on Dante's INFERNO, My- thology, the Bible as well as many others, were offered for the first time this year to seniors. This was the beginning of a new Pro- gram, APEX, which is designed to give stu- dents a choice as to the type of English pro- gram they prefer to follow. A similar pro- gram is to be inaugurated for the junior and sophomore classes in subsequent years. 18 English Department New faces, new methods, but the English remained the same. TOP LEFT: Mrs. Manker. TOP RIGHT: Mr. Fiorenza. LEFT: Mr. Anechiarico. ABOVE: Mr. Hoesel. English Department Top Right: Mrs. Andolina; Above: Mr. Evans; Right: Mr. Ryan. Not pictured: Mrs. Minor. 22 Top Left: Mrs. Griffiths — Librarian. Right: Mrs. Gale, Mrs. Atkinson. Above: Mrs. Tellep. Several new Non-Regents courses were offered -- one-semester Business Law, Non-Regents Business Arithmetic and Office Practice I-B. Office Practice students had the opportunity to acquire skills on up-to-date equipment such as electronic calcula- tors. 24 Language Department TOP: Mr. Angeline, Latin; TOP RIGHT: Miss Lord, French; ABOVE: Mrs. Dodson, German, French; RIGHT: Mr. O’Connell, German, Supervisor. Two French teachers made their debut in U-E's hallowed halls. Miss Lord and Mrs. Hunt were welcome additions to the Language Dept, where the battle of the verb was waged daily. 27 Science Department ABOVE: Mr. Teubert; ABOVE RIGHT: Mr. Lawton; RIGHT: Mrs. Mueller. No great explosions rocked the labs this year, although there were no lack of attempts made. Due to the fine bargaining powers of the vet- eran members of this department, no lives were lost. However, the lack of beakers, safety glasses and other materials made the general rule: ’’When in doubt, improvise. And Sarge's voice can still be heard ringing down the hall, Let's go, girls! 28 31 Industrial Arts Department Left: Mr. Makoske Below: Mr. Vergona Bottom left: Mr. Caveney Bottom right: Mr. Rossi 33 Phys. Ed. Department Far right: Mrs. Honnick; Right: Mrs. Marshall; Bottom right: Mr. Hamilton; Bottom left: Mr. Sylvester. Sophomore girls gave special thanks this year for a change in the style of gymsuits . Department Mr. Wurtenburg -- Director of Athletics. Special Departments Left: Mr. Jones; Above: Mr. Franklin. 35 Math Department Patient wading through muddles of equations, linear programmings and other such mind-killing parapherna- lia, continued while yet another year of math passed by. A new monster of math joined the ranks of U-E's math scholars in the form of a com- puter -- located in Room 309 -- with a terminal link to Harper College. Homework will never be the same. TOP RIGHT: Mr. Goodnow, ABOVE: Mr. Hol- comb, RIGHT: Miss Hartnett. 36 37 Above: Mrs. Bryden. Above Right: Mrs. Poor. Right: Miss Chomyszak. Waves of multi-colored lines, drawings, and assorted sketches surrounded anyone who chanced to enter the Art room. Exhibits by various students in the library showed the talent and the skill that are as much a part of school as studying. 38 Music Department The band, the orchestra, the choir. Sound. That's what its all about. 39 BELOW: Mr. Sweeney; BELOW RIGHT: Mr. Wilson; BOTTOM LEFT: Mr. Har- vey; BOTTOM RIGHT: Mr. Smith. Ithaca — we lost 51-19. That's not the whole story. Our defense was in there all the time, hitting, tackling, block- ing passes. Everyone was in, only our luck was out. So we pushed C.V. all over the field. Tom Mason hung in some beautiful passes to Mike Prislupsky, to Rod Zur. Jet Turns moved on the ground until he got smashed into the bench. Kill, Kill. C.V. was murdered 14-6. The first quarter of the Vestal game was ours. We led into the second but lost the game 68-27. But our Tigers came back for our last game against Central. It showed that Friday night as fathers were introduced to sons in mid- field, as fathers watched their sons pour out all the heart and soul they had to win. Our team won, and the seniors in the stands — some of them — cried.
