Some of our members are co-ops work- ing half days at I.B.M. During the year, we try to plan activ- ities that pertain to the business world. For example, this past year we have had Mr. Ridley talk to the Club about secre- tarial schools. Mrs. Daly, an executive secretary with Marine Midland, presented an interesting discussion about secretarial work; at one meeting we had a demon- stration of old typewriters. All business students, from sopho- mores to seniors, are welcome to join the dub. The Cabinet is the branch of the Student Government consisting of the Presidents of all clubs and classes, two independent members from each class and an elected secretary who was Elaine Angotta this year. Although the Cabinet is technically an advisory body, the members this year have cooper- ated in several activities. As an example, when Tri Hi was sponsoring the Winter Carnival, this club asked for the cooperation of the other clubs through the Cabinet, Similarly, Art Seminar planned its Holly Hanging Festival through the Cabinet, and the Senate sought help for its Christmas Charity Party in the Cabinet- SENATE U-E's 1400 students are represented in this group of 50 members, the Senate. Here, Lon Luizzi served as President, with Lou Alexander, VP; Adi Chirino, Secretary; and Dan Fontana, Treasurer. The Senate exists not only to stimulate responsibility among its members, but also to help determine school policy by working with the administration, and in general, to make student life at U £ more pleasant and rewarding. Through its many committees, such as Publicity, Honors and Awards, Communications, School Spirit, Inter-School and Student-Faculty, each student has a chance to become per- sonally involved. Being a representative body, communications to and from the student body are of prime importance. The Com- munications Committee, with Sue Nelson as chairman, fre- quently issued the Whirlwind to each student to keep him informed This committee has also strived to detect the atti- tude of the student body on different issues. In general, the representatives have reflected the humane attitude prevailing at U-E through several charity projects including adopting a Korean Foster Child, Krm Yung Kil, sponsoring a Christmas party for needy children and collect- ing a sizeable sum for local charities at Christmas time. But the true spirit of self-government existed and the essence of Student Government shined through when the Senate took part in forming school policy. Usually an idea or problem was presented in the Senate where preliminary discussion took place. The President then summarized the group's feeling. From here, the group's consensus was pre- sented at a Student-Faculty meeting. Here a committee of students presented the Senate's point of view to the adminis- tration and a final decision on the matter was made. Of course the Senate didn't overlook the need for enter- tainment and relaxation during the school day. A Dress Down and Dress Up Day were held; a student Talent Show was presented; an exchange assembly was held with AA-E and music was played in the halls throughout the school day. In the Senior lounge, curtains were hung and a new coke and candy machine were added. Composed of a group of responsible and interested, representative leaders and with helpful advice from Mr. Giarusso and Mr. Thurber, the Senate has assumed a major role in student life this year at U-E. 1. After the main discussion, the delegates broke up into discussion groups where topics such as Inter-school Com- munications and Communications between the Student Gov- ernment and the Student Body were discussed. Dinner at the Hotel Frederick followed and the confer- ence ended with the discussion group conclusions that were presented after dinner. This project helped us and the other schools form our publicity objectives for the year. PUBLICITY COMMITTEE Striving to inform the public of U-E's activities, the Stu- dent Government Publicity Committee, under Sue Vartuli’s chairmanship, has created respect for U-E and a better school-community relationship. This year, the committee has made use of all the news media. As an example, they got radio, TV and newspaper coverage of U-E's foster child. Our Publicity Committee, along with those of Seton and M-E, wrote and set up pictures for the new School Page in the ENDICOTT HERALD. Here, the activities of many clubs were recognized and pointed out to the community. In addition, it has given U-E, M-E and Seton a chance to work together on a project. HONORS AND AWARDS COMAAITTEE Strictly to recognize academic excellence, the Student Government Honors and Awards Committee has devoted its efforts towards U-E's first Honors and Awards assembly. Early in the year, the committee began drafting qualifi- cations for the awards. They based these qualifications on their belief that students mastering any subject area should be recognized- They decided that 94% indicated relative mastery. After getting Senate and administrative approval of these qualifications, the committee placed applications for awards throughout the school. The members then ordered pins and certificates for the awards that were presented at the assembly. TALENT SHOW The annual Student Government Talent Show took on a new name this year, the Jacky Bird Gleason Show. As MC, Jack Bird, with wit and humor, introduced each of the nine acts. Adi Chirino and her Taient Show Committee were in charge of the entire production of the show, from the audi- tioning to the staging to the directing. Dave Cranmer, with his monologue, had the audience in an uproar when he brought back memories of kinder- garten and first grade. For a finale Linda Starikov and Mary Morris sang Take Her Out of Pity as seen in the picture.
