foreword Change—John Dranchak We are inhabitants of a world in transition. From the very dawn of creation this globe has undergone a vast perpetual mutation from which has evolved the concept of mankind as we know it today. Transition and time are synonymous; for a change to occur there must be a lapse of time, no matter how small. Time, to us, is a tangible, yet abstract element, a concept so real that it regulates our every movement, yet so elusive that it swiftly passes us by nearly unnoticed. Because time and change are the same, change, too, must affect us in a similar manner. Our definition of change is something that wasn't—yesterday, is—today, and probably won't be—tomorrow. Yet, with change, there usually comes achievement. This is our motive in con- stantly seeking out distant horizons and this is also our reason for gaining them. Quite often change brings about a deterioration of tradition, of patriotic heritage, of his- toric pride. We tend to forget about the immense pyramid of human building blocks that is the very foundation upon which our present society stands. There seems to occur, however, at cer- tain periods in history, a change which has such profound implications that we suddenly re- member our heritage and again rescue the treasures which have been lost. War is such a change —and death. Certainly we shall all face circumstances which will take courage to repel and strength of convictions to defeat, but even the most desolate of situations changes. This is where we must make an adamant stand. Here we must hold the flag of democracy with unfaltering poise in the face of our foe, whoever he may be. For, if we stand up for our rights and steadfastly anchor our allegiances in the depths of our convictions, even though strong winds and currents from undesirable sources rush at us and temporarily alter our course, we shall eventually gain head- way and ultimately repel those deterring forces from our path. It is certainly a relatively simple task to stand up to a simple problem and defeat it. The dif- ficulty lies in how well one will react to the rigors of grave anguish, and in this, only the human mind can instigate the necessary liberating change.
