From the very dawn of creation this globe has undergone a vast perpetual mutation from which has evolved the concept of mankind as we know it today. Transition and time are synonymous; for a change to occur there must be a lapse of time, no matter how small. Time, to us, is a tangible, yet abstract element, a concept so real that it regulates our every movement, yet so elusive that it swiftly passes us by nearly unnoticed. Because time and change are the same, change, too, must affect us in a similar manner. Our definition of change is something that wasn't—yesterday, is—today, and probably won't be—tomorrow. Yet, with change, there usually comes achievement. This is our motive in con- stantly seeking out distant horizons and this is also our reason for gaining them. Quite often change brings about a deterioration of tradition, of patriotic heritage, of his- toric pride. We tend to forget about the immense pyramid of human building blocks that is the very foundation upon which our present society stands. There seems to occur, however, at cer- tain periods in history, a change which has such profound implications that we suddenly re- member our heritage and again rescue the treasures which have been lost. War is such a change —and death. Certainly we shall all face circumstances which will take courage to repel and strength of convictions to defeat, but even the most desolate of situations changes. This is where we must make an adamant stand. Here we must hold the flag of democracy with unfaltering poise in the face of our foe, whoever he may be. For, if we stand up for our rights and steadfastly anchor our allegiances in the depths of our convictions, even though strong winds and currents from undesirable sources rush at us and temporarily alter our course, we shall eventually gain head- way and ultimately repel those deterring forces from our path. It is certainly a relatively simple task to stand up to a simple problem and defeat it. The dif- ficulty lies in how well one will react to the rigors of grave anguish, and in this, only the human mind can instigate the necessary liberating change. administration We speak and what we do speaks far more strongly than what we say. What we are sounds much more significant than what we say we are. J. F. Kennedy top g. butz c. reavis I. brower I. starilcov bottom d. goetz e. wattles g. george board of education 5 superintendent 6 Dear Members of the Class of 1964: I was happy to learn that you had decided to dedicate your yearbook to our late President John F. Kennedy. This, I feel, is an excellent way in which you can express your respect and admiration for this great leader. Shortly after the death of President Kennedy there were some who said that we cannot say yet what place history will give him as a president. This is so be- cause his actions and his programs will have to stand the test of time. His great- ness as an American, however, has already been determined. His courage, his vision, his determination, his love of country and his desire for peace with honor caught the imagination of the American people and helped make many of us more grateful and appreciative of our glorious past and more aware of the lead- ership role the United States must play in the world today. His program to extend the rights and opportunities of this land to all, regardless of color, helped focus our attention on a serious problem which must be met and resolved if we are to give more than lip service to several of the most cherished provisions of our Constitution. These are only a few thoughts that come to my mind as I think of our late President. As a tribute to him it is our responsibility, yours and mine and that of all Americans, to participate actively in making our democratic form of government work and in keeping the United States strong. Sincerely, Robert D. Agone assistant superintendent instructional Fullest development of the intellect and talents of the individual was stated repeatedly by President Kennedy as a primary national goal and a national neces- sity. He said, I believe in an America where every child is educated, not accord- ing to his means or his race, but according to his capacity. And he said, Democracy demands more of us than any other system in education, character, self-restraint nad self-discipline . . . Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental resource. Schools, auditoriums, airports and bridges have already been re-named for our dead president—all fitting memorials. But achievement of the educational goals for our country which he so strongly endorsed would be the most fitting and en- during memorial of all. They can be achieved in only one way, pursuit of learning by the individual and appropriate respect for learning by our society. And they can be accomplished only as we strive toward them in schools and cities and vil- lages throughout the country. Let us start now and here, here at ll-E. Paul C. Bradt 7 principal At Union-Endicott High School students and teachers alike have experienced a decided change in building, fa- cilities and program. Consequently, it is most appropriate that the theme for the 1963-64 Thesaurus be CHANGE. Change for the sake of change alone is not desirable but change as an outgrowth of improvement is much de- sired. We can be proud indeed that our community is willing to invest time, money, and faith in our educational improvements. However, a school building change or a curricular change cannot guarantee good education. Our community, through its schools, can provide only the opportunity to learn. The rest remains with the student. Even this, then, is worthless unless the student is willing to put into practice that which he has learned. Good education changes people. Change may not always bring about vast improvement, but certainly improve- ment cannot come about without some change. Martin Bortnick, Jr. Principal vice principal It is quite appropriate that the theme of the Thesaurus should be CHANGE; for indeed the students have now long adjusted to the necessities of change brought about by the building program of the Union-Endicott School District. The theme, CHANGE, is even more appropriate today as we reflect upon the national scene, for indeed, the whole world is a scene of changes: changing re- ligious and political philosophies, changes in heads of states, the births of new nations, and changes in technology with their sociological impact; one could go on almost indefinitely. Change is essential to progress but should not be confused as synonymous with progress. Only through education and on the tested tracks of experience and tradition can change provide the new form which can be considered progress. Michael E. Gance Assistant Principal faculty Our task in this country is to do our best, to serve our nation's interest as we see it, and not to be swayed from our course by the faint-hearted and the unknowing. Sponsored by the Ballarat Rotary Club, she was given an opportunity to come halfway around the world to the America she had dreamed of visiting. Since her arrival on January 21, she has been living in Rotarians' homes as a family member. As she has been seeing our way of life, we have been learning how Australians live, which is really much the same. The U-E student body thanlc Helen for the experiences which she has given them and hope that her summer vacation and the remainder of the one year's stay in Endicott is pleasurable and meaningful. 48 Helen Pope from Ballarat, Victoria, Australia mary delaney from endicott, new york united states of america On the morning of February 23, 1964, Mary Delaney, a junior, boarded a plane in New York bound for Karingae, Australia. Her trip is sponsored by the Rotary Exchange Program and she was chosen to represent this district as a result of interviews through which she was distinguished as the most qualified candidate. She will remain in Aus- tralia for one year and will act as both student and teacher, for she will be experiencing as representing a different way of life. 49 activities Remember that our nation's first great lead- ers were also our first great scholars. The student government's chief goal is to represent the stu- dent body and to co-ordinate class and club activities for the benefit of the individual students. Besides the permanent duty of conducting class officer elections, the student government has this year initiated a student tutor sys- tem and established a school pub- licity committee. It also purchased a camera for this committee to use to further publicize school activi- ties. Under the Foster Parents Plan, U-E's student government is sponsoring a Korean orphan. What better way to obtain enthusiasm than through the leadership of the cheerleaders? Dressed colorfully in orange and black uniforms, they contribute much to the spirited quality of cheering at ath- letic events. Forty-four years of dedicated service to the students of Union-Endicott was terminated by the death of Miss Adona Sick, school librarian since 1920. Her death and the opening of U-E's long awaited new library occurred almost simultaneously. In past months, Miss Sick had car- ried out her duties as head librarian in the face of insur- mountable difficulties. Miss Sick's long and faithful record of service to our school stands as an inspiration to those who wish to see U-E always moving forward. One of the most startling, as well as pleasant changes resulting from the renovation is the new library. In what used to be the scene of many exciting basketball games, we now find a spacious, well or- ganized (and carpeted) library. Many thanks must be extended to Mrs. Griffith, our new librarian, and her assistant, Mrs. Atkinson, for tackling the tremendous job of organizing all the library material for the use of the student body. mrs. griffith mrs. atkinson seniors Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans— born of this century, tempered by war, disci- plined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage—and unwilling to witness or per- mit the slow undoing of human rights to which this nation has always been committed.
