I hesQuruS FOREWORD In a world divided with hatred and suspicion, unity is our only hope. Our present is a time of strife; our future must be a time of unity. For unity is the harmony and concord we must have to face the problems which lie before this troubled world. Unity is the individual. For we are as pebbles tossed into a pond; our high school. Since our rings of contact and influence are continually spreading, we cannot remain wrapped in ourselves. Unity is the community. Our school has helped us build a bridge for us to cross and look to our nation and to our world. What will give us this unity? Courage, strength, hope, and faith . . . faith in the unseen and all- powerful force which shapes and molds our lives . . . faith in every person's place in life. Let us set forth! Life beckons! May each of us achieve unity with himself, his fellow man, and his God. For thirty years Miss Pitkin has been prin- cipal of Union Endicott High School. Know- ingly or not, graduates of this school—those who have already been graduated and those who will be graduated in the future—owe much to her. She has labored unselfishly to further the interests of this school and its students. The staff of the '61 Thesaurus respectfully dedicates this yearbook to one who has greatly enriched the traditions of our alma mater. And with this tribute go our sincere good wishes to Mary L. Pitkin in all her fu- ture endeavors. We can never hope to re- pay her for all these years of service; we can only say, Thanks for a job well done! DEBATE CLUB The U-E Debate Club, only in its second year, is one of the most active and beneficial in the entire high school. Under the leadership of president Alida Wattles, and vice- president Charles Paddock, the club debates frequently with each other and with other schools. As the advisor, Mrs. Janet Smith says, Debate has many purposes. Among them are learning self control, sportsmanship, judgment, cooperation, initiative, tact, honesty, and leadership. This is why debating is so valuable and so popular here at U-E. This year's group, after winning the regional cham- pionship last year, is looking with anxiety to the March regional tournaments and the state tournaments in May. 80 SPANISH CLUB A newly reactivated club this year is the Spanish Club under the guidance of Mr. Carl Zonio. The main purpose of the club is to familiarize its mem- bers with Spanish life and customs and to further their knowledge of the Spanish language. Projects include the presentation of educational films and records in Spanish, and lecturers to speak about the various aspects of the Spanish way of life. A banquet and picnic mark the end of the year's activities. This year Diane Henderson served as president, Judy Thomas as vice-president, Jill Clark as sec- retary, and Janet Louden as treasurer. Just as a rebuff can eventually build a mountain of hate, an outstretched hand, a kind deed, an encouraging word can forge a chain of kindness that increases with each generation. Barney Goodfellow's influence was this latter type. For the most part it was un- noticed, even by those who received it; but sometime in the future, a man will be tempt- ed and he will resist because of what Bar- ney had taught him. Someone else will give help without thought of return and thus spread his influence. It is with this knowledge that with great sincerity and admiration we of the Thesaurus take time out to pay our last respects to our own beloved Harold S. Goodfellow. 107 FOOTBALL TOP, left to right: George Mitchell, George Wallace, George Ayer, Keith Coleman, Richard Tuthill, Edward Pakel, William Lambert, Charles Louden, Jeffrey Carpenter, Thomas Wylam.
