STANDING: Mr. Anthony Clemente, Dr. J. Glezen Watts. MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1960 It is always a pleasure to congratulate those who complete successfully the prescribed courses of study to qualify for the diplomas which represent a significant level of achievement—a level from which you may proceed with an improved chance for worthwhile success. The Board of Education encourages individual reflection upon the complex whole of your education at U-E. The full value of your education can be recognized by considering your total intellectual, emo- tional, and physical experiences to date. We hope that each of you is sensitive to the several aspects of human development, so as to enjoy their entirety as a great harmony which provides worthwhile purpose to a happy life. Best wishes and success to all. 8

A MESSAGE TO SENIORS It has often been said that music knows no borders or geographical boundaries, but rather, is a language which is understood by all people and which tends to have the peoples of the world understand one another better. I like to think that these attributes of music are also applicable to science, social studies, languages, mathematics, art, technical education, and all the other programs which make U-E High a truly comprehen- sive high school. The knowledge, the skills, the attitudes and the understandings which you, the graduates of 1960, have acquired and developed through your learning experiences in all of your studies provide you with a basis for communicating with others, for understanding our changing world and for making a con- tribution to this world. It is my hope that you will always strive to broaden your background through further learning experi- ences. In doing so, you will continually increase the degree of effectiveness of your own contribution to your fellow man. Robert D. Agone Superintendent of Schools 7

To 1960 Seniors — Congratulations on the successes you have had up to the present. Possibly your academic schedule has included Music, maybe as your major, perhaps as a minor or perchance as the personal bit of enjoyment which can come even though one is not an expert. May the rhythms and the harmonies continue to be with you. 7n fSWw MISS MARY L. PITKIN Principal Many plans have been proposed as a means to world peace. To obtain world peace nations must understand each other. It has been said that “music is the univer- sal language of all mankind.” Music is used as therapy in many hospitals. Music helps to create the well-tem- pered family. So why not use music as a means to world peace? Students should continue to participate in musical activities as long as possible. If unable to participate, youth can cultivate the art of listening to good music to provide a lifetime of understanding. DE WITT S. WOODARD Associate Principal 9
