Through me, spirits immortal speak the mes- sage that makes the world weep, and laugh, and wonder, and worship. I tell the story of love, the story of hate, the story that saves and the story that damns. I am the incense upon which prayers float to heaven. I am the smoke which palls over the field of battle where men lie dying, with me upon their lips. I am close to the marriage altar, and when graves are open I stand nearby. I call the wanderer home, I rescue the soul from the depths, I open the lips of lovers, and through me the dead whisper to the living. One I serve as I serve all; and the king I make my slave as easily as I subject his slave. I speak through the birds of the air, the insects of the field, the crash of waters on rock-ribbed shores, the sighing of wind in the trees, and I am even heard by the soul that knows me in the clatter of wheels on city streets. I know no brother, yet all men are my brothers; I am the father of the best that is in them, and they are the fathers of the best that is in me: 1 am of them, and they are of me. For I am the instrument of God. I am Music! Dedication ■ We, the 1960 graduation class of Union-Endicott High School, dedicate this yearbook to the memory of Mrs. Mildred A. Callahan, who died September 28, 1959, after thirty-four years of meritorious service to the Union-Endicott public school system, having served faithfully here at U-E twenty-four years, teaching Music, Harmony, and Theory. Her vigorous spirit and genuine interest in jjeople made her a leader among teachers. Mrs. Callahan never lost her desire to learn. After an extensive education at the Crane Institute and New ork University, she increased her scojx.- of knowledge by attending summer sessions at various colleges. It is for all these reasons and many more that dearly in our memory we shall ever hold Mrs. Mildred A. Callahan. 6 A MESSAGE TO SENIORS It has often been said that music knows no borders or geographical boundaries, but rather, is a language which is understood by all people and which tends to have the peoples of the world understand one another better. I like to think that these attributes of music are also applicable to science, social studies, languages, mathematics, art, technical education, and all the other programs which make U-E High a truly comprehen- sive high school. The knowledge, the skills, the attitudes and the understandings which you, the graduates of 1960, have acquired and developed through your learning experiences in all of your studies provide you with a basis for communicating with others, for understanding our changing world and for making a con- tribution to this world. It is my hope that you will always strive to broaden your background through further learning experi- ences. In doing so, you will continually increase the degree of effectiveness of your own contribution to your fellow man. Robert D. Agone Superintendent of Schools 7 U-E BOARD OF EDUCATION Left to right, SEATED: Mr. Granville Brink, Mr. Gerald H. Reynolds, Mr. Clifford M. Crane, Mr. Mario F. George, president, Mr. Paul Panson. STANDING: Mr. Anthony Clemente, Dr. J. Glezen Watts. MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1960 It is always a pleasure to congratulate those who complete successfully the prescribed courses of study to qualify for the diplomas which represent a significant level of achievement—a level from which you may proceed with an improved chance for worthwhile success. The Board of Education encourages individual reflection upon the complex whole of your education at U-E. The full value of your education can be recognized by considering your total intellectual, emo- tional, and physical experiences to date. We hope that each of you is sensitive to the several aspects of human development, so as to enjoy their entirety as a great harmony which provides worthwhile purpose to a happy life. Best wishes and success to all. 8 To 1960 Seniors — Congratulations on the successes you have had up to the present. Possibly your academic schedule has included Music, maybe as your major, perhaps as a minor or perchance as the personal bit of enjoyment which can come even though one is not an expert. May the rhythms and the harmonies continue to be with you. 7n fSWw MISS MARY L. PITKIN Principal Many plans have been proposed as a means to world peace. To obtain world peace nations must understand each other. It has been said that “music is the univer- sal language of all mankind.” Music is used as therapy in many hospitals. Music helps to create the well-tem- pered family. So why not use music as a means to world peace? Students should continue to participate in musical activities as long as possible. If unable to participate, youth can cultivate the art of listening to good music to provide a lifetime of understanding. DE WITT S. WOODARD Associate Principal 9 Left: Mr. Edgar S. Adult Education Over the past several years, the residents of Endicott have fully supported the U-E Adult Education Program. The forward-looking Board of Education, School Admin- istrators, and Adult Education Advisory Board have cooperated in making possible a comprehensive program. The U-E Adult Education Program now attracts approximately 3000 adults an- nually, with the audio-visual and lecture program serving an additional 1000 people. Adult students scatter themselves among classes which range from Russian to Rug Hooking to Americanization. A flexible program permits shifts with the times and community changes and needs. Mr. Mack Ryan is U-E’s Director of Adult Education. IBM Data Processing Wood Shop 77 Juniors Lead the Way THEY SERVE THE SCHOOL AT WORK AND PLAY. THEY LOOKED WORLD PROBLEMS IN THE FACE AT THE MODEL UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBLY. Left to Right: Guntis Lemcsis, Susan Hill, Charles Waugh. Although the activities of the junior class are but a prelude to the grand finale of the senior year, the Class of ’61 has throughout the year accompanied the march of the student body towards greater success in scholastics, athletics, and service to the school. In scholarship, the juniors were always well represented in the honor rolls. Two new scholastic clubs. Debate and Science Fiction, were led by junior presidents. Sev- eral juniors represented Union-F.ndicott at the Model United Nations Assembly ses- sion. In athletics, many juniors sparkled. The football team was captained by a member of this class. Many others contributed to the victories of teams throughout the year. In service to the school, juniors were outstanding. From the library to the gym- nasium to the stadium, members of the junior class gave many hours of valuable service to the school. With all this harmonious practice, the Class of ’61 is now ready to carry on the re- frain that the senior class has played so well. Michael Deemer, Peter Pazzaglini, and Frank Nunn typify the U-E sophomore’s interest in music. Robert Desko, Left, and Vincent Conklin represented the sophomore class on the basketball team. Sophomores The sophomore class officers arc here shown planning the future of the class. Left to Right: Charles Paddock, Vice-President; Michael Ciotoli, President; Mary Jane Hanson, Treasurer, and Margaret Matolka, Secretary. Fjtuke ' Plan During the early fall days of school, it was easy to recognize a sophomore in U-E’s halls. He was just a little out of step, as if he still marched to a tune of the past. Perhaps a little hesitant at first, he soon picked up the tempo of U-E’s spirit, and throughout the year he con- tributed much time and talent to school functions and ac- tivities. The U-E musical staff welcomed sophomores, for they offered much new talent. Many sophomores occupied seats in band and orchestra, and several added their voices to the choir. Mr. Ellis’s Homeroom 101 displays an assortment of optimistic sophomore grins. Sophomores (Left to Right) Victor Cres- cente, Marianne Bernardini, Cerald Webb and Susan Diles add their voices to the choir. Swing Into Step Right now, Biology interests these scientific sophomores. Maybe next year it’ll be Physics or Chemistry. Left to Right: Alida Wattles, Linda Lohman, Charles Paddock. Members of this class accepted the challenge of aca- demic work. Always well represented on the honor roll, some were even listed with high honors. .Two classmates represented U-E in the Model United Nations Assembly. Eager for both old and new, many joined traditional clubs, while others ventured into newly-formed ones. Several sophomores served as officers of these clubs. By the end of the year, the Class of ’62 was no longer out of tune, but had been accepted by all as full-fledged performers. Energetic and enthusiastic school supporters, they have finally swung into step.
