Norris SENIOR HONOR ROLL CEREMONY Each year the graduating June seniors who have maintained an average of at least eighty-nine and one-half per cent throughout the four years of high school are honored at an annual candlelight ceremony. Each senior is escorted to the stage by a junior honor student where he or she receives an orange and black robe to wear. When all are assembled on the stage, each senior's name is read. He or she proceeds to the center of the stage where there is a burning candle representing the light of knowledge and wisdom. Each graduate lights his candle from the burning candle and signs his name on the permanent record of oil students maintaining honor averages. The quiet simplicity of our traditional Candle-lighting Ceremony leaves a marked impression on both the participants and the audience. JUNE CLASS, 1947 Left to Right: George Bochura, Arthur Stenberg, Lill.ion Mrkus, Mory Jonecek. SENIOR OFFICERS We are proud of our class of June 1947 which is comprised of approximately 260 members. It would not be possible to enumerate each one's interest in activities but certain pupils should be named as having been chosen by fellow students or the faculty for outstanding positions. Among these is the president of the Student council, Arthur Stenberg, who, with Marilyn Lewis, was chosen as our Senior class representative on the council. Donald Mastro has distinguished himself by being elected captain of both the football and basketball teams this year. Catherine Chubinsky was crowned the Queen of U E at the annual Thanksgiving dance. Several seniors were elected presidents of the various clubs. Included in this list are: Fannie Longo, who heads the Tri-Hi Club; Doris Borromei, Italian Club; Patricia Fallon, Library Club; and Elwood Hendrick, Technical Club. In the literary field, Anne Forde and Lillian Skumanich were selected as co-editors of the Tiger. These two girls along with William Smith are co-editors of the Thesaurus. Marilyn Allen is the leader of the Creative Writing Club. A chapter of The Future Homemakers of America was organized last semester. This club has as its president Lois Messersmith. The Future Farmers of America have as their president Karl Spencer. Not to be omitted are Mary Janecek and Donald Mastro who were chosen by faculty members and fellow classmates as representatives of the student body on the Athletic Advisory Board. Our honor group, consisting of twenty-five people, is large in respect to the total number of people in the class. All in all, this has been a year that will be remembered by the class of 1947. The officers—President, Arthur Stenberg; Vice-President, Mary Janecek; Secretary, Lillian Mrkus; Treasurer, George Bachura — have been well chosen and one cannot help but think that if ten years from now, we all were to attend an alumni banquet, we should find that the class of '47 had become successful doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses, technical workers and, yes, housewives. In a world that needs educated people, may we go out to do our best, making our hopes and dreams of today the reality of tomorrow. 25
