JANUARY CLASS, 1947 At a Senior meeting held in the large auditorium, Joseph John Makar was elected president of the January class of 1947. His aid as vice-president was Mary Louise Crane, Ethel Galgocy and Michael Bundas were elected secretary and treasurer respectively. Blue and white were later the chosen colors and the white carnation was the favored flower of the one hundred seniors. Live and Learn was selected for their motto. A program of social activities was started. First on the agenda was the Senior play. The stage play, The Fighting Littles, was pre- sented under the efficient direction of Miss Barbara Thayer, U-E's dramatics instructor. Next, came the banquet which was held at the Holiday Inn in Vestal. For assembly, a Senior Class day program was presented. As a climax to the fun, on January 31, the Senior Prom was held at the George Washing- ton Junior High School, with music furnished by the Hi-Club orchestra. February 5, when the commencement exercises were held at eight o'clock Irene Lisak, Irene Kushner and Joseph John Makar, honor students, gave essays. When Miss Pitkin awarded the prizes, a prize of $5 was awarded to Elaine Biseo by the Woman's Club for maintaining the highest average in English for four years. Also, to Elaine was awarded the first prize by the Commercial Club for holding the highest average in 6 and Vi units of business. Second prize given by the Commercial Club went to Irene Lisak. An alumni prize of $5 was given to Irene for the highest average in all school subjects for four years. The Commercial Club awarded its third prize to Rosalie Cannavino for a high average in 5 and Vi units of business subjects. A prize of $5 was given to Frances Popular by the Kiwanis Club for the highest average in American history. John Shatz received the mathematics prize of $5 for mathematics honors. For the highest average in science and mathematics combined, he was awarded the R.P.I. Medal. The Bausch and Lomb Science Award was given to Ernest Sochor. Then, after receiving their diplomas, as the graduates passed through the doors of the auditorium, they entered a strange but challenging world.
