People have so many precious possessions they store away, so much in the way of tangible value which they treasure. However, the intangible — the memories of happy school days, the indelible portraits of friends — the associations these recall — these are the most prized wealth of most people. Rejoicing in the possession of memories of friends, of school activities, we visualize these as the separate parts of a rocket which bursts in all its beauty of design and color, shedding its myriad stars upon us. As the rocket gleams for us, we revel in its inexhaustible memories, and dream of its separate stars. 3 “An apple for the teacher ,” and gratitude we bring, For kindness, patience, understanding, when Our minds would wander to some far-off corner of the globe, And have to be recalled and made alert again. MISS MARY L. PITKIN Principal Miss Pitkin, our ever fair and friendly principal, is a graduate of New York State College for Teachers at Albany with post graduate work at Columbia University. She is especially interested in mathematics and likes to travel. We feel that she is always interested in us and anxious to make our problems hers. MR. WILLIAM J. KRUM, JR. Superintendent of Schools Mr. Krum was graduated from Hamilton and has had three years of graduate work at Columbia University. Mr. Krum is a Rotarian, is interested greatly in community and school cooperation, and stands for democracy in school administration. His friendly interest and efficient management have already won him respect from teachers and pupils. MR. DEWITT S. WOODARD Associate Principal Mr. Woodard is a graduate of St. Lawrence University. His understanding and congenial manner have won for him many friends in the two years that he has been at U-E. His outside interest lies in church work. 5 MISS ALENE E. ALDERSON Home Room 9. SECRETARIAL STAFF Mrs. Helen Cobb, Miss Jessie Brainerd, Mrs. Belle Barney, Miss Raymeta Chaffee Not Present: Mrs. Georgia Bolton 13 Where, oh where, are the verdant Freshmen? THE FRESHMAN CLASS By this time we, the Freshman class, have adjusted our- selves to high school. The halls that once looked so forbidding and gloomy now echo the happy voices of our new-found friends. We have found teachers to be always understanding and willing to help us over the rough spots. There are countless new activities in which we engage. Many of us belong to band and orchestra; some of our boys have gone out for football and basketball, and the glee club claims several of our group. Assemblies are new and different. As we peer at them from our high pedestal in the balcony, we think and long for the day when we are seniors and can hear them too. We have become loyal defenders of our school and know that we shall always remember the happy days we have spent as Freshmen at U-E. But will also gain well-won applause from you. We have often found amusement in the joyful escapades That Hibbard, Clark Company provide, And the many Sophs who helped produce the U. E. Talent Shows , Their abilities and skill worked side by side. There are artists and musicians, who will make their dreams come true, And those who'll write and sing tomorrow's song, And to these people, one and all, and many others too, We'd like to pass congratulations along. 15 Where, oh where, are the jolly Juniors? FUN AND FROLIC . . . CORRIDOR COURTSHIP . . . MEN AT WORK . . . It's been a whole year of being Jolly Juniors and all that the name implies . . . that important feeling of being upperclasssmen without having to assume the full-fledged dignity of Seniors . . . the time for strengthening ties and cementing friendships . . . and finally, sharing the joys of the homeward stretch with mingled feelings of regret, for, in truth, we were just beginning to like the place. FRIENDS AT PLAY . . . 16 Where, oh where, are the wise old Seniors? rr When time shall play on all of us its merry trick, What fun ’twill he to hunt these pictures through and pick The one with whom we fell in love, the one most likely to succeed, The one to whose marks we always gave most heed. 17 JANUARY CLASS, 1947 At a Senior meeting held in the large auditorium, Joseph John Makar was elected president of the January class of 1947. His aid as vice-president was Mary Louise Crane, Ethel Galgocy and Michael Bundas were elected secretary and treasurer respectively. Blue and white were later the chosen colors and the white carnation was the favored flower of the one hundred seniors. Live and Learn was selected for their motto. A program of social activities was started. First on the agenda was the Senior play. The stage play, The Fighting Littles, was pre- sented under the efficient direction of Miss Barbara Thayer, U-E's dramatics instructor. Next, came the banquet which was held at the Holiday Inn in Vestal. For assembly, a Senior Class day program was presented. As a climax to the fun, on January 31, the Senior Prom was held at the George Washing- ton Junior High School, with music furnished by the Hi-Club orchestra. February 5, when the commencement exercises were held at eight o'clock Irene Lisak, Irene Kushner and Joseph John Makar, honor students, gave essays. When Miss Pitkin awarded the prizes, a prize of $5 was awarded to Elaine Biseo by the Woman's Club for maintaining the highest average in English for four years. Also, to Elaine was awarded the first prize by the Commercial Club for holding the highest average in 6 and Vi units of business. Second prize given by the Commercial Club went to Irene Lisak. An alumni prize of $5 was given to Irene for the highest average in all school subjects for four years. The Commercial Club awarded its third prize to Rosalie Cannavino for a high average in 5 and Vi units of business subjects. A prize of $5 was given to Frances Popular by the Kiwanis Club for the highest average in American history. John Shatz received the mathematics prize of $5 for mathematics honors. For the highest average in science and mathematics combined, he was awarded the R.P.I. Medal. The Bausch and Lomb Science Award was given to Ernest Sochor. Then, after receiving their diplomas, as the graduates passed through the doors of the auditorium, they entered a strange but challenging world. SENIOR OFFICERS We are proud of our class of June 1947 which is comprised of approximately 260 members. It would not be possible to enumerate each one's interest in activities but certain pupils should be named as having been chosen by fellow students or the faculty for outstanding positions. Among these is the president of the Student council, Arthur Stenberg, who, with Marilyn Lewis, was chosen as our Senior class representative on the council. Donald Mastro has distinguished himself by being elected captain of both the football and basketball teams this year. Catherine Chubinsky was crowned the Queen of U E at the annual Thanksgiving dance. Several seniors were elected presidents of the various clubs. Included in this list are: Fannie Longo, who heads the Tri-Hi Club; Doris Borromei, Italian Club; Patricia Fallon, Library Club; and Elwood Hendrick, Technical Club. In the literary field, Anne Forde and Lillian Skumanich were selected as co-editors of the Tiger. These two girls along with William Smith are co-editors of the Thesaurus. Marilyn Allen is the leader of the Creative Writing Club. A chapter of The Future Homemakers of America was organized last semester. This club has as its president Lois Messersmith. The Future Farmers of America have as their president Karl Spencer. Not to be omitted are Mary Janecek and Donald Mastro who were chosen by faculty members and fellow classmates as representatives of the student body on the Athletic Advisory Board. Our honor group, consisting of twenty-five people, is large in respect to the total number of people in the class. All in all, this has been a year that will be remembered by the class of 1947. The officers—President, Arthur Stenberg; Vice-President, Mary Janecek; Secretary, Lillian Mrkus; Treasurer, George Bachura — have been well chosen and one cannot help but think that if ten years from now, we all were to attend an alumni banquet, we should find that the class of '47 had become successful doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses, technical workers and, yes, housewives. In a world that needs educated people, may we go out to do our best, making our hopes and dreams of today the reality of tomorrow. 25 JUNE SENIOR HONOR STUDENTS In order of averages Anne M. Norris SENIOR HONOR ROLL CEREMONY Each year the graduating June seniors who have maintained an average of at least eighty-nine and one-half per cent throughout the four years of high school are honored at an annual candlelight ceremony. Each senior is escorted to the stage by a junior honor student where he or she receives an orange and black robe to wear. When all are assembled on the stage, each senior's name is read. He or she proceeds to the center of the stage where there is a burning candle representing the light of knowledge and wisdom. Each graduate lights his candle from the burning candle and signs his name on the permanent record of oil students maintaining honor averages. The quiet simplicity of our traditional Candle-lighting Ceremony leaves a marked impression on both the participants and the audience. The board, consisting of our superintendent, principal, a faculty member and two athletic directors, meets with two senior students and two junior students to discuss any athletic problems that arise in games and athletic events. 1946 CANDIDATES FOR TRACK Although the 1946 track team did not win a third leg on the Binghamton Press Trophy, they did admirably represent the Orange and Black with their feats. King Football really kicked the ball around this football season by producing a Triple Cities Championship Team. He started the season in a mild way with a thrilling battle with North High's Indians in which the Cobbmen emerged victoriously with a 12-0 score. . . Watertown's Purple eleven practically put him on ice in a vicious, suspense-packed con- test with our Orartge Tornadoes. The Orange and Black, by virtue of Cardone's talented toe, put themselves in the winners' bracket, by slamming out a close 20-18 victory. Against Johnson City, a 1945 conqueror, King Football regained his footing and rolled to a 25-0 victory over the Maroon Wildcats. . . Union-Endicott proved to be poor playing hosts to visitors from Lawrence High, Long Island, by fighting to a 27-6 conquest and avenging another '45 defeat. The temporary success was a trifle too much for King Football to take as he ran into a stubborn Elmira aggregation who battled to a 14-14 deadlock with the favored Orangemen. Ithaca provided no competition to a thoroughly chastened U-E squad who pro- ceeded to run away with a game that ended in their favor with 46-6 as a score. Reported to be a threat to the 5 game, 1 tie record the Cobb gridders boasted of, the Scranton Tech eleven from Pennsylvania met and left the Tornadoes with a surprisingly easy 39-0 triumph. King Football ended his glorious and bruising campaign on Southern Tier gridirons at the Turkey Day Classic at the Union-Endicott Stadium between the Orange Tornadoes and the Binghamton Central eleven. The 33rd year of Thanksgiving Day competition saw the Tigers register the greatest victory in Triple Cities Football History by running over the Central Bulldogs to establish a record breaking 34-0 conquest. 51 CHEER LEADERS As the smoke of the elimination battle for positions on the cheering squad cleared away, Joan Bennett, Lucille Chura, Sybil Chatham, Jack Mayers and Vince Putrino along with 1945 hold-overs, Toni Salamida, Doris Friedli, Anne Marie Crane and Almondo Fiori were the ones chosen to cheer the football and basketball squads to victory. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL It is because of these boys that we had such a successful football season. We are highly gratified and appreciate their efforts to help condition the Varsity eleven. The JV's go to practice every night and pound away at scrimmage with their larger team mates without any glory whatever. Nevertheless, they are. In 1945, the girls who participated in sports, sponsored their first dinner in honor of alumnae who have taken part in after-school sports. Since then, this dinner has been an onnual event. Alumnae are awarded numerals, letters and sweaters according to the points they have earned in their years in high school. For each game played, each squad made, each championship attained, etc., a certain number of points is given. Any girl obtaining 100 to 120 points, earns numerals; 120 to 140, letters; 140 or more, a sweater. This year Rachel Burton and Norma Jean Ayer received numerals; Helen Grecko received letters; Eleanor Breno, Jean Courtright and Rose Greco, sweaters. “Record breaking is exactly how to describe Rita Gimmie's achievement in sports as she is the first girl to have attained 200 points. The girls' athletic department is very proud of her. She well deserves her sweater. Through the annual dinners a closer relationship between all classes is achieved. The girls have fun and anxiously wait for the next get-together. The activities, shown on the following pages, are indicative of the sports that are offered to the girls. In addition to playing for most of our assemblies, the orchestra has played for the Senior Play, Sermon for the graduates, and for graduation exercises. It has also played for the Parents' Night program and presented a short concert before a Civic Forum program. As usual the orchestra opened the annual Spring Instrumental Concert, playing Mozart's overture to Cosi Fan Tutte and Beethoven's lovable Andante Cantabile Move- ment of his First Symphony. It also played a fantasy based upon shepherd themes, entitled Roumanian Fantasy by Carol Velska; Ponchielli's Dance of the Hours and a violin ensemble Fugato by St. Jacome. BASS DRUM: Roger Vargo, George Volenta, Paul Ives, Robert Cerwonka, Frank Allio, and Goode Cheatham. Did you know that a colonial drum corps is the slowest marching organization in the world? Its cadence is one hundred ten steps a minute. Did you know the colonial drum corps dates back to the Revolution when troops of the continental army marched mile after mile to the beat of drums? The oldest corps in the United States today is the Mattatuch Drum Band of Waterbury, Conn., dating back to 1767. The U-E Colonials were organized in the fall of 1935 and became one of the out- standing junior corps of New York State. The colonials have held the distinction of New York State Junior Champions during the years 1936-'37-'38-'39 and '41. Through these contest years, the Colonials have collected twenty-seven cups and trophies. As for our uniforms, we wear the traditional continental dress uniform, which is very colorful with its cut-away coat, breeches, long flowing bow-ties and leggings. To this add a three-cornered hat and you have a picture of an early American. Our music is that which has been handed down from one generation to another. Some of it dates back to the Revolution. A good example of this is White Cockade and Yankee Doodle. Yankee Doodle, an English Air, was played by colonial fifers to ridicule the British after some American had set the time to the words which we know today. These tunes, our spread-out manner of marching, and our colorful uniforms make quite a contrast with the average drum corps today. If you will notice, our American flag suggests the early American era. Yes, it's the Betsy Ross. The long roll, one of the twenty-seven rudiments, was used as a signal to bring the defenders of America together. Whenever they heard its low rumble, they would leave their work and come running with their flintlocks. Thus drummers played an important part in America's fight for freedom. U-E should be proud of its Colonial Drum Corps. It takes a lot of work on both the teacher's and pupils' part to organize such a group. U-E is fortunate in having Mr. Ostling who is quite a drum corps enthusiast. 62 A CAPPELLA CHOIR SOPRANOS: Marion Bottino, Mary Bousquet, Jane Cook, Anne Marie Crane, Ada Dietrichsen, Lydia Fedones, Nancy Lee Frey, Rose Marie Giordano, Helen Gould, Barbara Hammond, Dorothy Hickey, Eleanor Hickey, Eleanor Hospodor, Mary Hoyt, Josephine lannone, Beverly James, Kathleen Kovanagh, Marilee Kramer, Patricia Lane, Agnes Miklos, Joan Mitchell, Constance Orris, Dorothy Packard, Susie Porzuczek, Dorothy Poklemba, Marian Remelius, Lillian Richards, Joyce Rox, Marilyn Sheehan, Barbara Silvernail, Alma Streno, Janice Woodard, Sandra Wright. The A Cappella Choir is made up of ninety-four of the most talented vocal students at U-E. In past years the choir has won award after award in state contests. This year's choir has given concerts at both junior high schools: Henry B. Endicott and George Washington. The group provided musical background for the Christmas Play and, along with the Glee Club, gave a Christmas Concert. They sang for the Sermon for the graduates and for several of our assemblies. Being a favorite musical group of I.B.M. music lovers, the A Cappella has given concerts for that corporation at various times during the year. To close each season, the entire A Cappella Choir holds an outing. CORNET TRIO PLAYING THREE SOLITAIRES 64 Thomas North, Willard Davis, Robert Ferraris. GLEE CLUB The Glee Club this year has advanced. Instead of being just a preparatory organiza- tion for the A Cappella Choir, it has made its own way to become an important part of our music system. THANKSGIVING QUEEN AND FOOTBALL CAPTAIN Under the guidance of Miss Gladys Mersereau since its organization in 1931, the Tri-Hi Club has added another successful year to its history. The 272 members have put on sport dances, annual Christmas and Spring formals, and a carnival. The annual All U-E Night Dance was held Thanksgiving night by the Tri-Hi and Hi Clubs. Some girls formed a bowling group while another group enjoys weekly dips at the Y. The girls participated in the selling of Marine tags. They also collected gifts and donations for the World Christmas Festival which sends packages to unfortu- nate children in Europe. An annual graduation prize is awarded for French. The Tri-Hi Club has also established a fund whereby former members may borrow money to be used for a college education. No interest is charged until the girl has been out of college for two years. The Thesaurus staff of '47 hopes to keep up the good record in this second year of publication. As is customary, part of the Tiger staff, plus all other interested students, join either Mrs. Finch, faculty head of the editorial staff, or Miss Hollister, faculty head of the business staff, to bring the students of U-E a printed record of their senior year. It has also been their aim to add as many other student activities as possible and to represent the other years of high school, to make enjoyable ing for the undergraduate classes as well. Under the supervision-of Miss Kniskern, the Commercial Club this year has made many interesting field trips to obtain first hand information about commercial and business enterprises of our community. The club is made up of ambitious future business people and these activities give to the members a glimpse of the commercial work they are taught in class, in actual use and practice. Visiting the telephone exchange proved very interesting. Here, the girls learned many of the intricacies and operations which go on in the telephone exchange. During the visit to the post office, the procedure for outgoing and incoming mail, registered letter service, special delivery, and parcel post were explained. Another very informative visit was made to the Endicott-Johnson Sales Building. The students were taken into the different departments and shown the work of each. Miss McCullough of the I.B.M. Personnel Office gave a talk recently about personal interviews. She explained the correct procedure of an interview, how to dress and act, and just what is expected of an applicant. The reason the club takes these trips and has executives and employees from different fields of business talk at meetings is to acquaint the members with business activities of the community, for the only way we can appreciate the everyday services given us is by seeing them in operation. At the tea a skit and recitations were presented. The annual Christmas issue of Circolo Italiano was again edited by pupils of the Italian classes. This magazine contains articles written in Italian. PLAY GROUP BANQUET 5 .V. % LIBRARY CLUB Seated: Mary Komar, Patty Fallon, Marguerite Harding. Standing: Shirley Etdredge, Audrey Keeney, Dick Mead, Audrey Cambers, Nancy LoBelio. The members of the U-E Library Club spend one period each day working in the library. They render valuable service to the school, the library and the librarian. In return the members receive an intimacy with the library, as well as an understanding of how to use the resources in connection with their studies. This experience will carry over to their use of the public and college libraries. The Club meets one period each week in a seminar group for instruction and train- ing. Lessons are worked out on the unit plan. After beginning work on the unit each student must rely on himself to follow directions on the lesson sheet, asking help from the librarian only after he has tried every resource available for finding the material himself. Prerequisites for club membership are aptitude, scholarship, and dependability. OFFICERS OF THE CLUB 1946-1947 Potty Fallon...................President Shirley Eldredge ....
