As Academic Dean, Dr. Neil Rowland 'look on 'rhis year for +he firsf +ime +he responsibilify of promofing academic excellence on +he Union College campus. According fo Rowland, 'lhis obiecfive can be accomplished by ob'I'aining a well- qualified facul+y dedica+ed 'ro confinued learning and imagina+ive +eaching and a s1'uden'I' body mo+iva'I'ed foward scholarly pursui+s +ha+ franscend grades and degrees. Since fhe qualify of a s+uden'I' body is +o a grea'I' degree defermined by +he scholasfic s'randing of ihe freshmen who are admiHed, and because of 'rhe policy of accepfing only secondary school graduafes wifh average or belfer accomplishmenf al' +he secondary level, +here is fhe possibilify +ha'I' some freshman applican+s, noi' properly challenged ai' +he secondary level bu'I' possessing fhe abiliiy 'I'o do college work, mighi' be denied accepfance. ln order fo iclenfify ihese s+uden+s, a Freshman Proba'I'ion Program was ins+i+u1'ed for 'lhe firsi' lime for +he fall semes'I'er, consis1'ing of a limiied class and work load, supervised s+udy periods, and an infensive program of individual and group counseling. Dean Rowland and 'I'he Curriculum CommiHee which he chairs made plans 'For a number of innovafions. A psychology class was 'laughi' on a pass-fail basis, an arrangemeni' designed 'I'o encourage s+uden+s +o become deeply involved in 'Phe learning process wifhoui' lhe pressure normally fell' when grades are a'I' s'I'ake. In addifion 'ro 'I'he Curriculum Commifiee, Dr. Rowland is chairman of 'Phe Academic S'l'andards CommiH'ee and is a member of seven ofher sianding commi'Hees on campus. He graduafed 'From Union College in I947 wi+h a major in Business Ad- minisfraiion and a minor in Chemisiry. ln subsequenf gradua'l'e work af +he Universify of Nebraska he earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in Bo+any. He served as chairman of +he Biology Deparfmeni' of fhe college from I95I un+il I967 when he was elecfed fo ihe posiiion of Academic Dean. r R.W. A Fowler, Ph D g atb A familiar sighf fo sfudenfs on campus is Dr. Ray W. Fowler, Presidenf of fhe College, walking his dog Major. Maior, a German shepherd given fo Dr. and Mrs. Fowler for Chrisfmas lasl' year by fhe sfudenf body, invariably adds a friendly wag of his fail fo Dr. Fowler's cheerful' greefing. Momenfs of relaxafion such as fhese are welcome in 'lhe busy day of fhe college adminisfrafor. ln addifion fo his dufies of coordinafing fhe various funcfions of fhe college, Dr. Fowler serves as chairman of fhe board for fhe Lincoln SDA school sysfem, is a member of 'lhe Cenfral Union Conference Commiffee and 'lhe Norfhern Union Conference Commiffee, fhe Boulder Memorial Hospifal Board and fhe Porfer Memorial Hospifal Board. He is also an elder of fhe College View SDA Church. Dr. Fowler is acfive in fhe Associafion of Nebraska Church Colleges and was elecfed presidenf of fhe associafion for fhe coming year. Dr. Fowler is also chairman of fhe Nebraska lndependenl' College Foundafion for fhe coming year. Each Tuesday noon, Dr. Fowler meefs wifh 'l'he Lincoln Rofary Club. He' serves on fhe Educafion Commi'H'ee of fhe Lincoln Chamber of Commerce. ln December, Dr. Fowler a'Hended fhe SDA Commission on Higher Educafion in Washingfon, D.C., and in January he aftended 'rhe Associafion of American Colleges and Universifies in Minneapolis. Perhaps fhe mosf memorable of his frips 'lhis year was fhe one made in Ocfober fo Washingfon, D.C. fo fhe Aufumn Council of 'lhe SDA church. While fhere on 'lhe Nafional Day of Prayer, Ocfober l8, I967, presidenl' mel' presidenf when Dr. Fowler was infroduced fo Lyndon Baines Johnson af fhe Whife House. On campus, Dr. Fowler meefs appoinfmenfs wifh faculfy and sfudenfs and keeps a wafchful eye on fhe progress of fhe college. He fakes careful nofe of 'rhe building program as well as lhe academic program. This year, said Dr. Fowler, l am especially happy aboul' fhe new fechnical program and fhe excellenf spirifual afmosphere on fhis campus as found among fhe affifudes of fhe sfudenfs and exemplified in 'I'heir willingness fo gef behind such programs as fhe sfudenf mis- sionary program. President
