ABS -Xq THE first professor at Union College was Colonel John Taylor, a veteran of the Rev- olutionary Wfar who had served on Wasliington's staff. You may see his picture hanging in the dining hall of Hale House. He is our chief touch with the Amer- ican Revolution, though it was the victory at Saratoga which led the inhabitants of this frontier community to start their petitions for a college, that their sons might be prepared to take their place in the new nation which that victory seemed to assure. Preparation f o r war has played a small part in the life of Union. Professor Isaac W. Jackson had his cadets in the 1830's and thus was known as Captain jack. Professor Elias Peissner organized and trained the Union College Zou- aves at the beginning of the Civil War, Docfor C. N. The college was fortunate in finding an able successor to Dr. Raymond upon his retirement in 1907. This man was the Rev. Charles Alexander Rich- mond who continued the fine work done by his predecessor. Dr. Richmond, wrote one member of the faculty at that time, made a dollar at Union College go farther in producing good results than has any other college president in the country. The Chemistry and Physics Laboratories, the Electrical Engineer- ing building, and Alumni Gymnasium were all completed during the admin- istration of Dr. Richmond, and the campus took on essentially its present form. Atter twenty years of service, Dr. Richmond retired and was followed by Dr. Frank Parker Day whose tenure of ofhce was limited by ill health. Dr. Day's successor was Dr. Dixon Ryan Fox of Columbia, a professor, author, and historian in his own right. Witlm the coming of the war, Union College found itself well prepared to meet the exigencies of the situation because of the fine work of Dr. Fox and his skillful handling of the military relationship between the college and the government. This, in brief, has been the story of Union College. From its gray, ivy clad halls have come such great leaders of past and present as Chester A. Arthur, john Howard Payne, Squire Wl1ipple, Willizlm H. Seward, Franklin B. Hough, Robert Patterson, and numerous college and university presidents, cabinet members, and foreign ambassadors. On the roll call of Valhalla are the sons of Union who gave their lives in the last war, and there will be many more who will pay the extreme sacrifice in this, But their sacrifice and -suffering will not be in vain for they are perishing so that from the gray, ivy clad halls of Union-from gray, ivy clad halls of colleges all over the country-may come the leaders of a finer and freer world of tomorrow!
