We come together hoping to achieve knowledge, sportsmanship, and moral principles. As one, we are strong, but divided, we are weak. Through hard work, dedication, and lots of fun, we stand together. The school year of 1987-'88 will be remembered as a year of learning and growing. We present these pages to help preserve the memories of that year. UCCHS faculty, staff and students: WE ARE THE PEOPLE — CHECK US OUT — Cheryl Brumley — 2 We THE PEOPLE make up the American society. We are part of the strengths and weaknesses of our leaders and our nation. Our flag of red, white, and blue — and our school colors — is a symbol of our freedom and WE THE PEOPLE are sources of that freedom. WE THE PEOPLE at UCCHS are representative of Americans everywhere who live with an abundance of blessings. Happy Birthday, Constitution — WE THE PEOPLE salute you. — Jennifer Keener 4 Activities Many activities go on here at UCCHS that are fun and exciting and do a lot to promote school spirit. These activities are highlighted on the following pages. One of my favorite activities is spirit days. Students and teachers dress up and do special things to show their school spirit and help the athletic teams get fired up for their games. Some of our spirit days are: twin day, stuffed animal day, vacation t-shirt day, rock t-shirt day and the ever-popular red, white, and blue day. My favorite spirit day is stuffed animal day. — Kathy Adkins 6 Honor Jackets too. This past summer at volleyball camp, Mr. Golds-berry came up and said, “Congratulations, J.J.!”. By the look on his face I could tell that, I too, had earned my jacket! On the first day of school all the students congregated in the gym and Mr. Golds-berry gave his first day announcements. Then he introduced the topic of academic honor jackets and explained about them. He then announced the names of three juniors who were to receive them that day. As he called my name, Mr. Rick-ert, of the Union Trust Co., put my jacket on me. A sense of pride and accomplishment filled me, and 1 knew that all my hard work had been worth it. — Jennifer Jones — Starting in 1984, this process of awarding students for academic excellence has produced 12 recipients. In order to receive an academic honor jacket, one must obtain four consecutive semesters of straight A’s. The jacket, itself, is made of a white, satiny material with the school colors, school logo, and a chevron for every semester of A’s. For each semester of A’s after receiving the jacket, one receives another chevron to place on his or her honor jacket. The academic honor jackets are paid for and presented by local banks, Farmers State Bank and Union Trust Co. Ever since my sister, Ann, received her academic jacket it had always been my goal and desire to have one. Mardi Gras My junior year Mr. Lacy asked the girls in his U.S. History classes if anyone like to be in the Mardi Gras pageant. If interested, we were to write a short paragraph stating the reasons for our interest. A ballot was drawn so the sophomore and junior classes could vote for the two girls they thought would best represent UCCHS. Carrie Mote and 1 were the lucky girls for this experience. The meetings for the pageant began in late July. Two girls from each county school met every week to work on modeling, make-up, and aerobic routines. For the pageant, we had to have an outfit of our choice to model, demonstrate two aerobic routines as a group, perform our own talent, and model a formal. Awards were given and Carrie Mote received a first-place trophy for her talent skit. The crowning was held Saturday night after the Mardi Gras festivities, which included a nippy parade ride in unseasonably cold weather! I received second-runner up and Carrie received first runner-up. The Mardi Gras pageant takes a lot of work and dedication to make it a success. I really enjoyed the girls from the other county schools and the people behind the scenes. It was truly a memorable experience! Sherry Murphy I. Sherry models her formal. 2. The Homecoming festivities began with the annual powder puff football games. For the championship, the seniors defeated the juniors in a close game. Following the game was a bon-fire and a powerful pep rally! After the great evening of spirit lifting, the entire senior class got together and celebrated by eating pizza at the Pizza Hut. Everyone was excited and anxious for the upcoming day! Friday rolled around and we started out the fun with a dress-up day. The parade came quickly. Being Student Body President, I had to make sure everything was done and ready to roll. The parade was exciting. Carrie Mote and I rode in a Merce-dez Benz convertible! The air was chilly and cold, and my hands were freezing. That evening we played the Lincoln Eagles. As a senior on the football team, my goal was to win the game. We did that! We beat them 23-21 in double overtime. That will be a night to remember. At the half of the football game, the King and Queen ceremonies took place. Each senior walked down the field for the 1st time. Each candidate waited in suspense. Then over the intercom, my name and Sherry Murphy’s name was announced. It was a dream come true for me. I hurried home after the game to get ready for the dance. The dance was really fun, because a lot of the students were present and having a great time! I’m sure this Homecoming will be remembered forever! (at least by me!) Matt Curts I. The hopeful candidates await the announcement. 2. The 1987 Indian team. 3. It was a unique play because it was a mystery and a comedy based on a middle class family which is unlike past plays at U.C.H.S. Each of the seniors involved in the play enjoyed the time spent together because it gave us the opportunity to get to know one another better. Most of the seniors had not been involved in a play before, and it was exciting to watch nerves sky-rocket and the anxiety build on the night of the play. Celebrations were in order after a Play lot of practices. The cast enjoyed themselves the night after the play watching movies until the wee hours in the morning and gorging themselves with snack food. All in all, each of the seniors enjoyed his experiences and has good memories of the senior play. — Carrie Mote 12 Who Killed Aunt Caroline? Mrs. Eleanor Endicotl .Carrie Mote Una Hagaman.. . . . Yearbook work actually started in the spring as we prepared to sell ads for the fall book. The ads somehow didn’t quite get finished, so the staff had a busy fall calling on (and re-calling on, etc.) businesses and individuals to try to get enough money to produce a book. After most of the money was collected, we decided on a theme which all the sections of the book are to evolve around, and each person was assigned a section of the book to complete. We started collecting pic- tures for our sections and thinking about layouts. The Josten representative met with us early in the year to show us how to set up the pages and we began. There were deadlines to meet, lost pictures and pages to contend with, but it was still fun. It’s exciting to actually create a book and to be responsible for the memories of a whole year. Working with the rest of the staff and Mrs. Reed was great (even though Mrs. Reed got mad when we almost missed deadlines) and I’m already looking forward to helping produce another yearbook. — Andrea Lloyd — Andrea Lloyd posts checks in the ledger. l9S7-'88 Successus Staff Mrs. Reed .. . The students were nicely dressed, cheery, and there was a sense of excitement in the air. It was the day of the induction ceremony for the most prestigious organization in the school, the National Honor Society. For ten of the candidates for the NHS, this would be one of the most nerve-racking and important days of their lives. National Honor Society has one of the most unique induction cere- monies of any organization. I sat in the gym bleachers with sweaty palms, shaky nerves and a pounding heart. As Matt came toward me my heart raced even faster! As he got closer and closer, the tension mounted even more. When that long-awaited and much desired tap fell on my shoulder, I breathed a sigh of relief and happiness. My hard work had paid off. I had made it! I was now a member of the National Honor Society. Brian Caudill was announced Prom king. This was it! “The Prom Queen for this year is Josh Barnes, my date, came to pick me up about 5:30 on the big night. When he walked in the door, I had to take a second look! What a difference a tux made! He looked so good! After a few hundred flash bulb explosions in our faces, we were off to eat steak and shrimp at the Shadows. It was very good, but since my dress was a little tight I couldn’t eat much! We arrived at the gym which had been transformed into the land of OZ with the theme of “Over the Rainbow” I had my doubts whether we (the Junior class) could get it decorated on time, but we did and it looked great. The evening progressed, and it was time for the fateful announcement. “Sarah Schem-mer!” Me? Really? Me? I did it, I had won “Bubba” and I had our dance, and then I danced with Josh who was beaming. Springtime activities at UC are always noteworthy. This year’s spring activities included the usual race to get the library inventory finished, the frisbee tossing on the front lawn, the seniors getting the gym ready for Awards Day and graduation, the traditional senior cruises back and forth in front of the very school they professed they could not leave soon enough to suit them, and some new items of interest. Mrs. Coats brought a kite in for a demonstration and the class of '88 started the tradition of the “Senior Rock” — Which has seen three paint jobs so far, everyone wants in on the act. Spring Scenes Secrets pals are an interesting and fun part of school life at UC. Usually it involves student council members and faculty and staff, but anyone who wants to may participate. My secret pal this year was super! Every surprise I got came in a small brown paper bag with a clever note typed on it and was signed “Reeda”. My goodies included a disposable camera, party favors, cheese, jewelry, a nifty little desk set, etc, etc, all sorts of clever and cute items, my favorite probably being my pink “Hot Looks” watch! I early on confronted Mrs. Austin with the accusation of being my “pal” and she denied it, so I looked elsewhere. The next information I received was that my secret pal was a boy! I busily provided boy-type items for my pal and even got “him” an IU sweatshirt for Christmas because I knew he had to be an IU fan! I could hardly wait for the breakfast to find out who the shifty, clever little varmint was! The day finally came, and a big brown paper bag appeared on the table in front of me with a message indicating I was not yet to find out. I stood and yelled, “Reeda, where are you?” and at my side came this little voice that said “Here 1 am!” and I turned around to see picture 4 beside me. It has been especially fun being on Council with my brother Tim, who also got to serve on Council with our older brother, Steve. The Student Council is one of the busiest organizations at UCCHS. We organize a lot of school and community activities. Some of the things we’ve done this year include: sponsoring several dances, organizing Homecoming, International Week, Spirit Week, Career Day, and the first annual Mr. Teen Pageant. We also collected money for UNICEF and sent Christmas and Valentine greetings to the elderly. Our staff of custodians keep our rooms clean, and tidy up our messes and are much appreciated. The cafeteria staff works hard to prepare delicious meals for us on a limit budget. Their noontime lunches have been the downfall of many a weight-conscious student or teacher. The “subs” who helps us out when a teacher can’t make it are an invaluable additon to our educational system. THANKS! Mrs. Coats was a familiar face in our halls this year as she subbed in practically every department. 2. Melissa Furby was Mrs. Austin’s student teacher and quickly became a favorite with faculty and students alike. 3. Karen Hersberger. Ralph Stewart, and Andy Gcesy take time from their busy schedule to pose for us. 4. Mrs. English helped out with Mrs. Austin’s classes, and was also a delightful addition to our staff. Row 1. Marjorie Bailey, Head cook, Janice Fisher, Linda Hylton, Row 2: Judy Hindsley, State cafeteria inspector, and Barbara Edwards. We Love Our Teachers A much needed respite came in march in the form of “Teacher Appreciation Day”, sponsored by the National Honor Society. Goodies were provided in the lounge and flowers appeared on teacher's desks. An exciting treasure hunt ensued and was quickly won by Mr. Leahey. A National Honor Society student was assigned to each teacher who wanted one for the entire day, thus enabling the teachers to catch up on all those little chores that never seem to get done. The faculty very much appreciated being appreciated! 1. Mr. Leahey. treasure hunt winner, poses with his winning clues and NHS members Matt Curts and Shaun VanSkyock. 2. The faculty enjoyed the refreshments provided for them in the lounge. 3. Mr. Root won the “cutest baby picture” contest, and denied allegations that he borrowed a picture of someone else to use! 4. Upon his return, Mr. Golds-berry was “appreciated” with several dead plants and bouquets from an unknown source. TEACHERS They're people who care. And show us the way. They are the sculptors, And we arc the clay. They give us their free time with nothing in return. Except for the satisfaction, that we might have learned. They could have been Doctors. Chemists, or Preachers. But they wanted to help others, so they became Teachers. They guided us through our elementary years. And wiped away our adolescent tears. They calmed us down when we got into fights. And they showed us how to stand up for our rights. Not only did they teach us Reading. Writing, and Math, But they taught us the importance of taking a bath. Teachers take the time to show us the way. And they certainly don't do it for glamor or pay. Teachers arc people of a special breed. They are the gardeners and we are the seed. They plant us carefully so that we might grow. And water us with things such as Edgar Allen Poe. They strengthen our minds, and enhance our soul. They want us to turn out like diamonds, not like coal. We owe them all so very much. For guiding us through school with a magic touch. They arc our friends and we wish them the best. Please, think about this poem before you hand out that test! Sincerely. Aaron Applegate Barn Party ’88 The RECTA organization tries to earn enough moeny to present a scholorship each year. Freshmen The class of “91” entered the high school as most Freshmen classes do — nervous and a little apprehensive about the year. They settled in and made their mark however, with a great float for Homecoming.
