Walnut Union City, IN 47390 Volume 53 Unique At UC Union City, the town in two states, served by one post office, one fire department, one police force, but two school systems, is in itself unique. This uniqueness extends into the school system where our small high school provides activities, programs and learning situations that are uniquely superior. The following pages will highlight our specialities and show the many things we do that are “uniquely U.C.” -3-1V-] 3 4 ACTIVITIES Unique And Special Union City has always produced outstanding and successful activities. From the beginning Homecoming week-end to the Final graduation ceremony — each event is well-planned and carefully executed to create a unique and special moment in the school's history. MARDI GRAS — 1986 Union City sent two representatives to the annual Mardi Gras pageant held at Winchester on September 23rd at the high school auditorium. Ten county school representatives were judged on beauty, poise, personality, and talent. Rosie sang “Love Will Find a Way” and Shaughn presented a modern dance routine for their talent presentations. The pageant and the following parade capped off activities which began last May. Pageant practices and parade appearances filled the summer months, but the girls enjoyed the experience very much. Each contestant was awarded a plaque for her participation in the event. I. Rosie sings “Love Will Find a Way” 2. Shaughn poses in her formal. 3. Rosie’s suit and hat are very chic. 4. The Thursday night pep session, and powder puff football game always kick off the action. The junior girls emerged victorious from the powder puff battle, beating the sophomores in the final game. A Friday afternoon parade is traditional complete with very professional looking floats, representatives from the many organizations and clubs, miscellaneous entries, and a Grand Marshall. The football game follows, highlighted by the crowning of the king and queen halftime. The evening is nicely capped off with a dance at the Northsidc gym where the alums mix with the students. I. The downtown parade is always enjoyable. 2. Jim Mellon. Debbie Runkcl. Chris Fra c and Alice Schoo represent their classes. 3. Academic Competition Academic competition teams in English, Fine Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and All-Around competed at three levels of competition this year. The Eastern Indiana Academic League was formed in the spring of 1986 to give schools an opportunity to have local meets. Union City Community, Hagerstown, Centerville, Union County, Lincoln, Winchester, Monroe Central, Tri, and Union of Modoc participated in three meets during the year. Union City teams did well competing and brought home first and second ribbons from each meet. In March, the teams went to Jay County for an invitational meet which gave the teams practice for the state meets. The Hoosier Academic Super Bowl, sponsored by the Indiana Committee for Excellence in Education, was conducted on a regional level first. Teams winning top places in their school classification went on to Indianapolis for the state finals. Union City Community High School qualified two teams in the Richmond regional meet. The Fine Arts team and the All-Around team competed at Decatur Central High School in Indianapolis on May 9. The Fine Arts team received third place in the class four state competition. The All-Around team received fourth place. Students spent many hours of preparation and study for the various competitions. This year’s state topic was “Romance and Revolution, 1750-1870.” 51 Bus Barn M.A.C.C. 1. Muncie Area Career Center: Matt Jessup, Jodi Barga, Absent: Melinda Hutchinson, Shea Bailey. 2. Each caring member of the educational team strives to do his or her best, whether it be figuring finances or supervising a dance. The warm, caring (and fun-loving) faculty make U.C. the best place to be! Mr. Eugene Huddleston, School Superintendent School Board Members: Bottom: Jim Davis, Pat Good. Mrs. Good divides her time between guidance and the library. Mr. Clear is in charge of our K.I.S.S. program. Mrs. Butler teaches English, and is also in charge of our gifted and talented program. Miss Chcnoweth teaches French and World History. Mr. Hinshaw, our biology teacher, participates in a dress-up day. Miss Lindley seems to enjoy her first year at U.C.C.H.S. Mr. Lcahcy, in his extra-curricular duties as Student Council sponsor, spends a lot of time on the telephone. Mrs. Motto, our new guidance counselor, enjoys the tasty school lunches. Mrs. Nash teaches geometry, algebra, and physics. Mr. Noffsinger takes a break from his driver's training duties for a snack. Mr. Nash ponders over a biology problem. Mr. Price, in his first year as U.C. band director, really enjoys talking to Santa. Mr. Welch teaches vocational ag, is a 4-H leader and helps with science fair projects. Mrs. Rismillcr lectures to her sewing class. Mr. Root, our industrial arts teacher, gears up for a Saturday football game. Mr. Webster, our returning math teacher, prepares to assume his extra-curricular duties with the football team. Mr. Schmidt, with his ever present coffee cup. pauses outside the K.I.S.S. supply room. 66 Our unique and unmatched faculty had a busy and productive year. In addition to their teaching duties, they coached, sponsored clubs, supervised various school activities and sporting events, served on committees, and helped out wherever needed. The new academic competition team practices stole extra hours, and it was once again North Central evaluation time. There were some fun times, too, however. Mr. Welch upheld UCCHS honor by winning the goat milking contest during the Winchester ballgamc. Mr. Drill did his best to eat a whole pan of FFA sausage, and the faculty showed their spirit by coming to school with “bells on” December 22nd and 23rd when the whole county was out of school for vacation. Teacher appreciation day in April came as welcome relief as NHS members were assigned to teachers to help them catch up. Rolls and juice were served in the decorated teacher’s workroom and a red rose graced each desk. A scavenger hunt quickly turned into frenzied competition and teachers and “helpers” scoured the building (and elsewhere) for needed items. Rash promises were made (“— a diploma for a rabbit’s foot!”) and there were unproved accusations of thievery. Mr. Nash won under strong protest from Mrs. Reed, Mr. Goldsberry and Mr. Leahey. The rapport between students and faculty is great here at UC. The NHS members shared some of their thoughts with the faculty on Teacher Appreciation Day, and one member wrote, “I believe a teacher has to be a fine person before he can be a strong and purposeful instructor. All of the teachers here arc fine examples of kindhearted people who would be able to excel in anything they do. Most of all, I feel that our teachers are friends, almost family. They have all received our respect, as well as our trust.” CLASSES Freshmen This years freshmen class got off to a good start on their high school journey. They enthusiastically joined in school activities and produced a fine float for Homecoming with the theme of “The Bulldogs are All Washed Up”. Their successful magazine sales in the spring also proved this class to be an ambitious one as they exceeded their sales goal and added some much needed cash to the class treasury. Sophomores The class of ’89 began the year by enthusiastically participating in Homecoming. Powder-puff participants and male cheerleaders represented the class well as did the float with the theme “Flush Those Bulldogs . Oktobcrfest brought more fun than money with a sponge throw and a cane toss booth. Christmas “cheers” came when the Sophomores won first place in the door-decorating contest. “Pee Wee’s Play-House was the skit chosen by the class to send the basketball team off to try for a sectional victory. The homecoming float received a solid second place finish but the girls powder puff team was number one overall. Seniors 87 The Senior Class had a very successful year as they won the float competition at Homecoming and the canned food drive at Christmas. The class mischieviously hid their canned goods in the giant kiss in the foyer which went along with the song they made up “We Wish You a Merry Kissmas.” They also were very useful as they sponsored a car wash during Oktoberfest and the annual blood draw, which the seniors always anticipate with great delight (terror). Many seniors added more prestige to the class as they excelled on the new academic competition teams this year. It was not all work however. Senior seminar took a spring trip to Union Station, while the entire class enjoyed their “educational” trip to Dayton. The class also had an official senior party with their parents that was a great success. A great year for the great class of 87!
