r 1986 Successus Union City Community High School 603 N. Walnut Union City, IN 47390 Volume 52 U..C..CJH.S.. . . . ON LOCATION Feature Players 99 u.e.e.M.s. — oa1 wcazjoa “The movies? You mean the real movies?” These and other comments of disbelief followed the stunned silence which greeted Mr. Goldsberry's announcement that we had been asked to be extras in the filming of “Hoo-sicrs“, a movie being made in Knightstown about Indiana basketball in the 1950’s. Roars of approval and delight followed. The days that followed were busy ones indeed as we discussed hair styles and clothing. Goodwill stores and attics were searched for the perfect outfit. Mr. Welch was the first to make the supreme sacrific as he appeared one morning minus his beard of nine years. Mr. Root soon followed, and Mr. Black stalled — hoping for a miracle. The casting director came to look us over on Nov. 11th and picked several examples from the 50’s clad crowd to show us what look to strive for. Friday — November 15: The big day had arrived and the would-be stars reported to their homerooms for attendance at 6:00 A.M. The charter buses, generously provided by local donors pulled out about 6:30. We disembarked in Knightstown and were herded into several classrooms to be checked by wardrobe. If we were suitable we were then direct- ed to a large heated tent on the school grounds where we bided our time by learning the “Hickory” school song. Those who did not pass this first inspection were sent to “Hair” — that dreaded final resting place of many a curl and mustache. Many passed through those shears, trimmers and combs including Mr. Black, Mr. Drill and Mr. Baum, and finally arrived in the gym (the “set”) looking strange indeed! Upon entering the set, we encountered an astonishing array of paraphernalia and people. Cameras, light, screens, fans, cables, chairs, etc. covered the floor and technicians, grips, gaffers, actors, directors, etc. were busy setting up lights, moving light screens, talking into their head phone sets, sweeping and resweeping the floor, practicing their lines and doing whatever it was they were supposed to do. The “perspiration lady” was of special interest as she carried a bottle around and sprayed the ball players in preparation for their scenes. There was a lot going on and we appreciated it because we did a whole lot of sitting. We did get to do w.hat we do best — be basketball fans. We booed, hissed and cheered sometimes in pantomime. We broke for lunch about 2:00 and raced to the buses to pick up our lunches fixed by our cafeteria staff very early that morning. We took them to another heated tent to cat and reported back to the set for work — more sitting. Mr. Lcahcy and Mrs. Wagoner entertained us with “The Swing on our return and drawings were held during the day to further help pass the time. Stars, Gene Hackman, Shcb Wooley, Barbara Hcrshey graciously gave autographs and had their pictures taken with those brave enough to ask. Our day in the sun finally ended about 7:30 as a happy, but tired and hungry group, boarded the somewhat less comfortable school buses for the long trip home. We arrived back at the home studio about 9:45 in the pouring rain to be greeted by the patient parents who had been waiting since 8:30 for us. Nothing could dampen the enthusiasm of some however, as they planned a return trip on Saturday to the set on buses provided by the movie personnel to have another go at stardom. Our fondest hope now is that we don't all end up on the cutting room floor! Oh well, it was a very memorable day for the U.C. cast — no matter what. Hurray for Hollywood! I. The hopefuls appear for wardrobe tryouts on Monday morning at U.C. 2. Some good examples of 50’s style are found in Ann Jones, Chandy Shiltz, and Tonia Skiver. 3. Mr. Root smiles through the pain of his freshly shaved face. 4. Faculty members appear in their 50’s finery. 5. The weary cast gathers for the trip home. 4 SCENES LICHT5 — CHMERR — RCTION The shooting schedule was tight this year on the U.C. lot, as we tried to work in all the several varied activities. Homecoming, Mardi Gras, Octoberfest, N.H.S. induction, Senior Play, Prom, Awards Day, Spirit Week, dress up days — these scenes highlighted the most promising stars of the ’85-’86 season. Costuming was sometimes difficult, but casting was easy as each actor played his part — from the stars down to the bit players. Production rolled along with the usual hitches, but the sneak previews and daily rushes looked promising. The following stills show what participation, enthusiasm and dedication can achieve, as once again we produced a smash hit from the U.C.C.H.S. cast. 6 Chosen for Leading Roles The 1985 Mardi Gras Pageant (formerly known as The Junior Miss Pageant) actually began last May with the choosing of candidates. Two girls from each Randolph County school were chosen by their respective schools to vie for the starring role of Mardi Gras queen. A meeting was held to discuss details and procedures, and was followed by several practices during the summer months. The pageant was held at Winchester Community High School on October 1, 1985. During this time the girls performed a routine, did some modeling, displayed their talents for the judges and had a personal interview. Our hopeful stars, Melissa Mote and Janel Fritz, wowed the audience with their superior performances. Janel wrote, played and sang a song of her own composition called, “Jesus, I Lift My Voice to You.” Missy did a ballet dance to the tune of “Skylark”. The parade on the day of October 5th was a contest of endurance as winter tried to come early. The girls survived, however, and looked radiant for the crowning ceremonies that evening at 10:00. Melissa Mote was crowned Queen and Janel Fritz was named first runner-up, therefore bringing two titles back to the proud cast on the U.C. lot. 1. Missy looks confident. 2. Janel strikes a pose. 3. Missy rides through town in the parade. 4. Janel smiles to the crowd. 5. Janel displays her gown. 6. Missy shows her talent in ballet. 7. Janel congratulates the new Mardi Gras Queen. Homecoming Earns Rave Review The U.C. cast gave outstanding performances during the Homecoming activities. Festivities began on Thursday night with a powder puff football game won by the Senior girls. A pep rally and bonfire followed this annual ever-exciting event. Friday night’s activities began early with the Homecoming parade at 4:30 led by Grand Marshall, Ed Reish. The float theme this year was songs, and the seniors showed their creativity by producing the winning float with the title “We’ve Been Working On a Victory.” The Sophomore produced an outstanding float with “Nobody Knows the Trouble Fve Seen” as their theme. The juniors placed third with “Juniors Say Victory Is Easy Money,” and freshmen received fourth place with “The Heat Is On.” The faculty also produced a float this year, and their theme was, “Indians Work Hard For a Victory.” The Indian team produced their best effort against the Wes Del Warriors, and won 20-19 in an action-packed contest. Joey Michael and Melissa Mote were the stars of the evening’s halftime events, as they were crowned King and Queen by last year’s royalty, Lori Gates and Von Ebeling. The activities ended with the annual dance at Northside sponsored by the Student Council. I. Freshmen boys show their spirit by donning chccrleading outfits. 2. Awards Day May 28, 1986 Spirit Weds Spirit weeks presented a nice break in the winter routine as the cast geared up to cheer our future players on in their victory bids. Spirit dress was as follows: Monday, Stripes Day; Tuesday, Nerd Day; Wednesday; Class Day, as all the classes chose a theme, dressed alike, and presented a skit during pep session. The freshmen proclaimed, “Our Indians are Hefty” and did a outstanding skit on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood which won them a second place finish. The sophomores opted for “No Sweat” and wore synonomous attire, while the Juniors copied their favorite Americans. The Seniors won the day with their “Born to Be Wild” theme and skit. Our efforts to inspire the boys fell short, but our spirit helped motivate the girls to another county championship and the winning of the victory key. 1. Our Indians are “hefty”. 2. Without the extras and their efforts, the show could not go on. One very important group is the yearbook staff who has the difficult job of recording the happenings and events of the year at the studio. Arranging the stills into a pleasing and memorable format and trying to catch the feeling and flavor of a particular year is often a frustrating and tedious job. The 1985 football season was a very satisfying one for Coach Tim Welch and the “United Indian Pride.” Despite the 3-7 record, the Indians played exciting football, scoring an average 19 points a game while giving up 24.3 points a game. Among the three wins, were the electrifying Homecoming win over Wes-Del, a 35-12 win over Northeastern in the final game, and a historical first play-off win over North Decatur — 40 to 19. The ’86 season looks promising because of 20 returning lcttermen, but the seven seniors, including all TEC wide receiver Scott Hinshaw, all TEC offensive lineman Brian Smith, leading passer Kirby DeHaven and leading rusher Joey Michael will all be missed. VOLLEYBALL: BUMF The volleyball team debuted with a victory over Mississinawa Valley. The season highlights included a victory over county champion Monroe Central. Playing starring roles for Union City were seniors Shari Herriford, Linda Whitacre, and team captain, Anne Brumfield. who was chosen to the Randolph County team. Junior Suzanne Snyder was also voted to the county team and to the Tri-Eastern Conference team, along with winning the top server award. She was also voted most valuable player by her teammates. A good junior class along with sophomore Danita Price, made up the supporting cast. The reserve volleyball team had a blockbuster year, finishing with a fine 10-5 record. The girls’ tennis team had a rough season this year without any wins to show for their hard work. It was somewhat of a construction year as most of the girls were underclassmen. From the start the team looked promising with seven seniors and a strong corp of juniors. Losing highly touted senior Doug Jefferis to a bout of mononucleosis caused Coach Kirwin to shake up her line up and the team finished the year 2-15, going 0-6 in the Conference. The team’s number one player was Noel Carpenter. Noel also captured MVP honors for the Indians. Sophomores Bobby Hawthorne won this year’s reserve tournament. 2. Steve prepares for a forehand. 3. Defense was the main ingredient in the Lady Indians’ success. Highlights of the year included a second straight County Tournament Title and keeping the “VICTORY KEY” for another year. The team also shot a school record 56.6% from the free throw line. An outstanding performance by Leigh Ann Byrum named her to the All-County All-Conference team, as well as earning honorable mention for All State and the MVP award!! SHOOT • • • PASS In a somewhat up and down season, the UCCHS boys varsity basketball team lost the horseshoe, but won it back; lost the first game of the county tournament, but tied for the TEC championship with Centerville. It was an exciting season, nonetheless, that saw the Indians defeat crosstown rival Mississinawa Valley twice, county rival Winchester, and TEC foe Centerville to garner a share of the conference crown. There were wins over Monroe Central on Michael Wasson's last second shot to avenge an earlier loss in the county tournament, convincing wins over Cowan, Southern Wells, Lincoln, Adams Central, and Northeastern. There were also heartbreaking losses to Randolph Southern on a shot at the buzzer, to Hagerstown in a two point game, and a three point sectional tournament loss to Centerville in a game well played by both teams. All told, the Indians notched a 12-8 record, 5-1 in the TEC. Vince Miller was named MVP, led the team in assists, in rebounds, was co-winner of the free throw shooting percentage award, and scored the 1000th point in his career on his way to leading the team in scoring. Rob Resler led the team in field goal shooting percentage. Junior Michael Wasson was selected to the all-county team and received honorable mention all-conference. Kirby DeHaven was also named as an honorable mention all-conference selection. Seven seniors played their final season for UCCHS. They were Steve Brewer, Kirby DeHaven, Scott Hinshaw, Joe Michael, Vince Millr, Rob Resler, and Brian Smith. 1. Kirby DeHaven takes a jumper. 2. Rob Resler awaits the rebound. 3. GOLF: DRIVE CHIP The 1985-’86 Linksters produced this year the first winning season since 1978. Their overall dual meet record was 10-3 and their TEC dual meet record was 5-1. The team tied in TEC overall. Seniors Jon Brum-ley, Ty Buckingham, and Ray Mullins were all four year golfers. Competition was stiff this year. Ray Mullins and Jay Spradling were in contention for the MVP award which was not decided until the sectional. Jay Spradling edged Ray out at the end of the season. Jay Spradling, Jon Brumley, and Ray Mullins all competed for the best putter award which was finally won also by Jay Spradling. The reserve team finished their season 5-8. WRESTLING: FIN REVERSAL This year's wrestling season was the best ever for coaches Tim Welch and Rick Root. The Indian wrestlers compiled a very fine 10-1 season, losing their only dual meet by one point to Hagerstown. As a team, the Indians defended their triple dual championship and finished a very close second in the Union invitational. County, Tri-Eastern conference, and placed second for the first time in the Sectional, sending seven wrestlers to the regional. The two seniors, Denny Kiser and Thomas Byrum will be greatly missed. Thomas compiled a 68-11 career record, was a four year letter-man, four time Tri-Eastern Conference Champion, three time County Champion, two time Union Invitational championship, semi-state qualifier, two time co-captain, and was named Most Valuable Wrestler his senior year. The understudies have come a long way this year, and this should make for another star-studded cast of fine wrestlers to carry on the studio’s winning tradition. 1. This year’s team went 10-1. 2. Deric Rcsler avoids the takedown. 3. Jim Price is always in control. 4. Duane Hunt will return next year. 5. Coach Welch shouts helpful hints. 6. Chad Curtner waits for the whistle. 7. Joe Michael and Michael Wasson were named to the all-conference team. Strong pitching performances were turned in by Corey Van Skyock and Bob Hawthorne, and outstanding offensive performances came from MVP Joey Michael and Michael Wasson. Seniors Steve Brewer, Rob Resler, and Carl Abel will be missed in the line-up next year. 1. Joey Michael is known for his golden glove. 2. Steve Brewer waits for this chance at the big catch. 3. JUM The girl’s track team did well in big meets this year, as they finished second in the Randolph County meet and fourth in the Tri-Eastern conference meet. Mary Heitman and Melissa Adkins both placed first in the Tri-Eastern conference in the long jump and the 400 meter dash respectively. Seniors Karry Shannon and Angie Burk provided steady performances to help lead the team. The younger members of the team show a lot of promise as they prepare for next year’s contests. I.
