The yearbook showed not only the faces, but also revealed what was behind them. It was impossible to represent everyone who made U.C.C.H.S. a part of their lives, but one thing could be depicted-the SPIRIT that made each individual a part of the whole. That SPIRIT which made the whole complex educational process work, will be reflected on the faces in the book. SPIRIT 4 JWi 141 8 10 School spirit-a feeling of unity and pride. The students at U.C.C.H.S. pulled together toward a common goal. Students were the basic element of learning. Their spirit and enthusiasm showed in everything they did. The many varied activities at U.C.C.H.S. have allowed the students to express their spirit and talents. Special activities at U.C.C.H.S. have traditionally included Homecoming, Spirit Week, Spring Day, Prom, plays, Awards Day, and, of course, our unique graduation ceremony. Indians Chalk Up Victory Over Raiders 12 Homecoming at U.C.C.H.S. highlighted the 1980 football season. The festivities began with the homecoming parade, in which floats, homecoming candidates, and bands participated. The junior class was victorious in the float competition, fol- lowed by the sophomores, seniors, and freshmen. At halftime, Lisa Zimmers and Gary Fisher were crowned Homecoming Queen and King. The evening was topped off with the Indian's triumph over the Southern Wells Raiders, 28-22. 13 U.C.C.H.S. Girts Win The Mardi Gras The spirit of participation showed when Lisa Zimmers was crowned as the Queen and Melissa Jones placed as the second runner-up in the Mardi Gras Pageant. The girls showed enthusiasm and charisma during the competition. Lisa went on to participate in Miss Indiana pageant in June. Christmas was a busy time for everyone at U.C.C.H.S. The Student Council organized the convocation which everyone enjoyed. Students were entertained by the U.C.C.H.S. Band and Chorus and other special features. A Christmas Dance was given, by the P.T.O., at Northside for the student body. That Good Old Christmas Spirit At U.C.C.H.S. Small Cast Successful With “The Mousetrap” 16 The Mouse Trap, a murder mystery by Agatha Christie, was a very successful endeavor for the U.C.C.H.S. senior class. Though the cast was small, the entire class had a chance during the six weeks of practice, to get involved with scene and prop making, make-up, and or publicity. The cast showed us a lot talent-wise and the sets were skillfully done. The proceeds from the Mouse Trap went to the senior class for graduation expenses. This year the parts were open to all students and the financing was handled by the juniors. This was a particularly successful play because of the beautiful music under the direction of Mr. Cahalan and the coordination of scenery, dance, and staging under the direction of Mr. Leahey. We hope this play begins a long tradition of fine musicals presented by all students at U.C.C.H.S. Spirit Spirit week was a busy one for students at day was 50's day. Upon arriving, the guests' cars were parked by sophomores clad in oriental outfits, while the guests followed a trail of lanterns to the door. Crossing over a bridge, guests were greeted by their host and hostess, a gong was sounded, and their names were announced to all present. After being seated, guests broke open fortune cookies, and were given a scroll neatly rolled and tied and a pair of chopsticks to serve as favors for the evening. Entertainment was furnished by Wafer Street. That record was good enough for a second place finish in the TEC. Brian McCoy was named MVP by his teammates. With help from the three other seniors, Greg Hoffman, Greg Elliott, and Dave Hap, Brian led the team to many victories. The future looks good for next fall, with a fine nucleus of juniors and underclassmen returning. e n n 5 Front Row: Greg Hoffman. Brian McCoy. Greg Elliott. Row 2: Tim Adelsperger. Shawn Drew. Terri Gilbert Spikers Season Disappointing. The Union City Indians Volleyball team had what might be considered a disappointing season. The record, at 3-13, is not what Miss Fulton, the head coach, had hoped for, 1980 was exciting, however, from the fan's point of view. The team was always in the game and tremendous volleyball skill was shown consistently all year by the spikers. Steady play and good volleyball were the norm for most matches, and with a few breaks here and there, the spikers would have had a much better record. Amy led the Indians in team spirit. Julie was named to both the all-county and all-conference teams. 36 im «• m:m!: HI Tami had one of the most powerful serves on the team Lynna's power-spiking ability was a great asset to the club. This season's football Indians made great improvements and finished the year with marks of 5-5 overall, and 3-3 in the TEC. During this successful season. Union City scored 171 points, while opponents managed only 149. Shane Merritt was awarded all-state hon- orable mention and led Union City in rushing. Mike Turner pulled down 5 TD passes to top the list of receivers. Another senior. Junior Hutchison, stopped opponents 186 times to prevail as our best tackier. Bo Humphries, in his first year on the team, set new course records for home and away meets. 1980 was a year of improvement for the U.C. Cross Country team with bright outlooks for the future. The eight man team was composed mainly of underclassmen. Leading the team was sophomore Steve Herriford who made the all-county team and received M.V.P. Honors. Sophomores Bo Humphries and Ron Wilks added strength to the club, competing in their first year for U.C.C.H.S.-finishing as second and fourth runners, respectively. There were several highlights during the season. The team shot a respectable 49% from the field while scoring more total points than their opponents. In twenty out of twenty-two games this year, the Indians were ahead in the second half, and in ten games defeat came by only two points or less. Probably the most impressive statistic was the teams G.P.A. of 3.63. Personal acknowledgements were earned by the following: David Dotson-Honorable mention All-State MGR. Although the record didn't show it, the campaign was exciting for all of the Union City fans. Outstanding performances were exhibited by all team members with special honors going to Angie Miller, who was named to the all-county and all-conference teams. The record showed the Indians with a slate of 5-12 overall, but it didn't reveal the sectional victory over Hagerstown. Individuals contributed greatly to the success of the team. Vic Miller, wrestling in the 185 lb. weight class, advanced all the way to the Semi-State before being eliminated. Vic also received the Outstanding Wrestler of the Year Award. Shane Merritt received the trophies for the most take downs, 20, and the quickest pin at 13 seconds. This year's good record indicates the talent the Indian's had which accounted for several fine finishes: Seventh in the sectional, third in the TEC, and second in the county. Office Help The Union City Community High School office girls played a vital role in the smooth functioning of our school. Their many duties included picking up attendance slips, finding and escorting students to the office when needed, running errands and delivering messages, and making class materials for students and teachers on the Xerox machine. The girls also answered the phone and waited on individuals who came to the counter. The fifth period girls, in addition to their other duties, helped Mrs. Livingston count the daily cafeteria money. Two new projects were added to our already fun calendar of events last year. Our Council formed a Who's Who committee to recognize special achievements of various students. We began an exchange program with Monroe Central and Winchester, which we found to be a valuable learning experience. The following is a Nst of some of the activities that Council sponsored or participated in. Our Council was one of the hardest working and most efficient clubs. By selling ads to local businesses during the summer, the staff was able to keep the price of the book at an inexpensive $9.50. Sacrificing their spare time, they developed layouts, set up photo sessions, took pictures, and most important of all, met deadlines. This small, but efficient group of students worked hard to make the Successus a yearbook to be proud of. Julie and Les argued over which pictures should be used. Carrie was Co-editor tor the second year. Mr VanOsdol sorted through pictures at the picture sales Julie.
