Once again, the Seniors won the float competition, although this year, the class of 1980 won by a very narrow one point margin over the Juniors. To top off our Homecoming festivities, the Indians were victorious in a really exciting game against Hagerstown. (right) Crowned at half time. Lisa Mote was named Homecoming Queen. She was accompanied by the new king. Bruce Applegate. (middle left) Let's get fired up Indians! (middle right) Foreign Language Club candidates were Doug and Joni. In the fall we had the pleasure of being entertained by two chemists from Purdue University. For Christmas, each class presented a skit to the school. We also saw a slide show of bicycle travel presented to us by Robert Davenport of Wandering Wheels. (Above) Larry, the Red Nose Reindeer, shows his Christmas spirit. (Left) Dave and Cirilo experiment with helium. •17 Mardi Gras This year Lisa Mote and Tonya Mus-grove represented our school at the annual fall Mardi Gras. Areas of competition included evening gowns, street clothing, swim suit and talent. The girls did a fine job with Lisa finishing in fifth runner up postion. Besides winning the title of Junior Miss, Tonia also won the talent competition, and went on to become a finalist in the state competition. Union City's other contestants, Jana Price and Daphne Byrd, did a fine job. (left) Jana introduces herself to the audience. (above) Miss Hap was crowned Junior Miss of 1980. Many fine actors and actresses from the class of 1980 had a chance to display their talents in their presentation of Arsenic Old Lace. Besides an outstanding performance given by the cast, the stage crew also helped to make the play a hit. The play was directed this year by Mrs. Austin and Mrs. Hauth. We'd like to congratulate them for doing a great job. 24 Aunt Abbey CAST Daphne Byrd Aunt Martha Sherry Linn Teddy .... Throughout the week many artists visited our school to demonstrate their skills. Among these artists was a mime who performed and then conducted a workshop after the show. Another highlight was the Ball State Singers, a dynamic group of students who sing and dance all over the United States. 26 27 Kable Independent Study Seminar Kable Independent Study Seminar, Or K.I.S.S. as it is often called, has come a long way since its beginning in 1972. Since those early years K.I.S.S. has grown and improved in many ways. This year K.I.S.S. got a new look with the new color equipment bought with the money raised this year. Our school is proud of K.I.S.S. and its progress and looks forward to many more years of production. (Front row) Sue Schemmer. Donna Maloy. Carrie Kendall. Tonia Hap. Joanie Sullivan. Radha Gowda. Co-MVP winners Dave Schiavone The Cheerleader and Steve Hol-linger The Navigator led the squad, which was coached by Mrs. Kirwin. Steve dominated the number one singles position while Dave teamed up with Jay Case to form a vicious doubles team. Greg Hoffman added his powerful play to gain a 7-3 record and a shot at the TEC championship. Brian McCoy, Larry Mendenhall and Frank Perkins played well while rotating between the third singles and second doubles position. Brian defeated his Muncie North foe for a sectional victory. Cross Team Shows Youth, Determination The 1979-80 edition of the UCCHS cross country team may not have been the most experienced, but what they lacked in years they made up for in determination. Heading this year's squad was lone senior Ted Walters. Ted possibly showed the ultimate in determination when he literally gave everything he had against Hagerstown and collapsed yards short of the finish line and first place. Coach Noffsinger called it the greatest effort by a runner that he had ever coached. Ted was not alone, though. Several underclassmen like Jon Garland, Steve Herriford and Jerry Williams added promising strength to the club. If all goes as expected, UC opponents should look out in the next few years. The squad lost just two seniors and carried seven juniors, so the outlook is bright for coach Fulton. The reserve team finished their season at 7-7. MVP honors went to senior Mitch Miller, who led the team in tackles and assists. Shon Prescott and Tony Jones were also tough on defense, finishing second and third in defensive points. On offense, the ground game was led by Shane Merritt with 688 yards and Gary Fisher with 535. Quarterback Kevin Powell went to the air effectively, gaining 697 yards with nine touchdowns. Mike Turner was his favorite receiver, catching 25 passes and had six TD's. The offensive line leads the charge. The overall record may be misleading for there were many bright spots this season. At times the girls looked as if they could have played with anyone in the area. There were only three juniors and no seniors on the team while the beginning level posted a 7-1 record, their only loss coming at the hands of Lincoln by .45 of a point. Amy Livingston earned the outstanding gymnast award. Cindy Moyer performed well on the intermediate level while Brenda Shockney turned in some fine performances at the beginning level. Many games were cancelled because of rain while the Indians dropped a few close games when they did play. Senior Bruce Apple-gate earned the MVP award with some great plays in center field and consistent hitting at the plate. Seniors Fred Barga, Jay Case, Cirilo Nunez, and David Boggs also added depth to the Indian attack. Greg Hoffman and Gary Fisher headed the pitching staff. Freshmen Les Lee and Darin Pratt gave the team hope for the future, with their fine play. Darin gained all-conference honors as designated hitter. After over a year of fund-raising, the UCCHS Band showed off its sharp, new red, white and blue uniforms. This, plus a change in marching style, gave the band a crisp, flashy look. Following a tiring week at “Camp Mudd, as it was fondly called, the band dazzled UC football crowds with entertaining halftime shows and precise pre-game drills. The band performed in several parade competitions, receiving one coveted first place trophy and one second. The versatile group then became the UC Concert Band, winning a first division superior rating in the Band Contest. They performed in several concerts under the direction of Mr. Cahalan, who took over for Mr. Frey in January. Of course, who could forget the Pep Band? They really added zip to pep sessions and basketball games. The UCCFIS Band was one of the most closely-knit groups in school. The members went through a lot together — good and bad. UCCFIS was proud of the 1980 Band. It was the best yet! 79 Harmony Honeys Bottom Row: Jennifer Davis, Linda Tharp, Kathy Koon, Sherrie Kirk Top Row: Lisa Cales, Diane Stocksdale.
