Future Teachers of America Future Teachers of America is an organization which allows high school students to study the teaching profession and get actual teaching experience through exploratory teaching. The purposes of F.T.A. are to interest good students in the teaching profession; to cultivate qualities of leadership, character, and scholarship among students; and to provide students an opportunity to work with children so that they realize potential satisfaction in teaching. The Future Teachers of America club was organized in 1937, with the approval of the National Education Association. Since then, F.T.A. has grown from one high school club of 72 members, to 4,043 high school clubs of 117,691 members. The Union City chapter of F.T.A. is composed of 36 members and was organized in 1960. The club engages in panel discussions and invites teachers to come and talk to the group. The group holds a fall installation of officers, and a spring party jointly with the Mississinawa Valley chapter of F.T.A. The members in their senior year, pick the subject they would like to teach, and are assigned to a class where they actually help the teacher with his teaching responsibilities. This is F.T.A.'s program of exploratory teaching. The national F.T.A. emblem is a silver and black torch topped with a red flame. F.T.A. colors are black, white, and red. —Kathy Corbin 15
