Union City Community H.S. Union City, Indiana The members of the SUCCESSUS staff dedicate this book, a product of their work and research, to you the students of Union City Community High School. The theme of the SUCCESSUS this year -- We Remember --conveys the main purpose of our book, to bring back memories of our high school years when we are far away in time and place. There will be memories of sports, clubs, and friends, as well as classes. The image of your favorite teacher or your best friend may fade with the years. We hope, though, that the SUCCESSUS will bring back to you every happy moment of your school days, through every year of your life. l Mirror, mirror, on the wall who is the best groomed of them all? Margaret Fitzmaurice and John Snyder--winners of the F.H.A. sponsored goodgrooming contest. The Junior Prom—a truly memorable Southern night in the Creole Gardens. Seniors WE REMEMBER --twelve years. Twelve years of fun, learning, worrying, sorrow, joy. We remember some of the most important events in the world, as well as everyday happenings. --listening and worrying with the world as the first astronaut orbited the earth. --Mr. Carder's English classes; our prom, and everything that happened that day. --Freshman initiation, scrubbing those awful sidewalks. --Senior concessions. All right, who cleaned up the park? —receiving our graduation pictures, ordering invitations, struggling for the money to afford our class trip. --worrying about that English Literature final. --the late President John F. Kennedy, and the horror and shock felt by the world at his death. We remember friends we've gained, new places we've been, old toumies we've seen. Our lives are just beginning, but we have all these memories. This was the first year for the new Student Council policy of having only senior girls as candidates for Homecoming queen. mmm Sharon Adelsperger and Cathy Bamum tied in a vote of the Class Rings--sign of the Junior Class. entire Student Body for Junior Attendants at the 1963-1964 Homecoming. Juniors WE REMEMBER --That this is eleven down, one to go! Soon we will be worrying about college. --making those horrible odors in chemistry, which, when combined with the art class and the home-ec cooking classes, give the school a different distinctive smell. --getting our class rings. Aren't they beautiful? --hoping upon hope for that trip to the World's Fair. --stripping cane. Nothing is better for you after a simple day at school and before a late night out, than stripping cane for an hour or two. Anyone for blisters? --how proud we've been of our basketball players. --history class and all those notes! We have a big year ahead, and a lot of big years behind us. Get those cane stalks clean, girls! And what's Zaharako's battle cry? What messes are these Junior boys planning for today? Members of the Sophomore decorating Jimmy looks a little discouraged. Oh, well, maybe the next committee evidently feel that they de- time it will be a strike! serve a coke after winning the high school division of the school spirit contest sponsored by the Student Council. These Sophomores were caught red-handed as they were breaking the school rule, No students are allowed in other student's lockers. Sophomores WE REMEMBER —that another year has gone by. The time is going fast, but we will make the most of it! --our class parties and the wonderful times we had. We think it's more fun to spend our money this way than to go on a trip, anyhow. --the day we got our class sweaters and jackets. We wore them for days straight, but can you blame us? --turning sixteen, and finally having that wonderful driver's license. Watch out!! --guidance classes. Trying to obtain a goal or two toward which to strive. --winning the school spirit contest at school with our decorations and pep session program. --troubles over girls and troubles over boys. Everything is so mixed up! This is our year. We're still young enough to act a little nutty and not be criticized, and old enough to be able to tell the freshmen what to do. These hard-working coat checkers are finding that those dimes add up fast. Jean Stoner, Jo Jonson, and Chuck Jones look at the globe as we admire their class sweaters and jacket. So, students actually do look for books when they have passes to go to the library. Freshmen WE REMEMBER --freshman initiation. Now we are high school students working individually and as a unit toward a definite goal. --being able to attend high school students only dances and convocations. --class electionsj having our own student council members to give us a voice in the government of the school. --biology class. Who cares how many hearts a worm has? --mohair sweaters, dickies, stretch pants, princeton haircuts, But, Mom, everyone has one! --report card day panic! They say, you're only a freshman once, aren't you glad? We aren't. This is a wonderful year, the start of something big. It looks as if Mark and Randy have run into some trouble Slaves added a realistic touch to the Junior Prom, trying to sell magazines for their class. Creole Gardens. When Mary Stephens cleans her locker for a locker inspection, she really cleans it. Eighth Graders proudly display the trophy which they won in the Student Council sponsored school spirit contest. Kent Shank helps provide the music at the basketball games. Junior High WE REMEMBER --how far away junior high school used to seem, and how important. --the fear we felt as we came to school that first day to face new teachers, new classes, new friends--a whole new way of life. --that everything, but everything, is blamed on a seventh or eighth grader; paper in the halls, fights in lunch line, everything! We don't mind too much, though, because someday soon we can blame it on someone else. Our memories are still a lot of grade school; basketball games, recesses, milk breaks. Yes, we remember many things, but we realize that most of our memories are nothing compared to things that we have to look forward to. --Judy Keltner We Remember Our TEACHERS Board and Superintendent Work Hand in Hand SCHOOL BOARD Wayne Fisher, Treasurer; Duane Hockensmith, Secretary; Doris Debolt, President; Jerald Noffsinger, Lloyd Welch. Future Teachers of America Future Teachers of America is an organization which allows high school students to study the teaching profession and get actual teaching experience through exploratory teaching. The purposes of F.T.A. are to interest good students in the teaching profession; to cultivate qualities of leadership, character, and scholarship among students; and to provide students an opportunity to work with children so that they realize potential satisfaction in teaching. The Future Teachers of America club was organized in 1937, with the approval of the National Education Association. Since then, F.T.A. has grown from one high school club of 72 members, to 4,043 high school clubs of 117,691 members. The Union City chapter of F.T.A. is composed of 36 members and was organized in 1960. The club engages in panel discussions and invites teachers to come and talk to the group. The group holds a fall installation of officers, and a spring party jointly with the Mississinawa Valley chapter of F.T.A. The members in their senior year, pick the subject they would like to teach, and are assigned to a class where they actually help the teacher with his teaching responsibilities. This is F.T.A.'s program of exploratory teaching. The national F.T.A. emblem is a silver and black torch topped with a red flame. F.T.A. colors are black, white, and red. —Kathy Corbin 15 Judy Keltner Jayne Noonan Sandra Hobson Honors Awarded to Students Congratulations are in order for those students who have received scholastic awards and for those who have successfully participated in various contests held throughout the year. Her engaged sister Margaret and her parents told her love was wonderful, but hadn't she seen her sister Lorraine hurt by a boy, and even now, wasn't Jack going with that awful Jane? Perhaps he would come back to her, but there wasn't much time before she left for college. What could she do? SEVENTEENTH SUMMER is the tender story of those first big dreams and that first big love, and a wonderful family in love with life. Judi Fulk, Ray Hurst, Judy Keltner Plays Highlight the Years Susan Van Vickie, Marcia Tibbetts, Susi Oswalt, John Beck. Time Out for Ginger Ronald Alexander Howard Carol had his problems . How could people turn a simple little speech on manners into a major issue, circulating petitions to eliminate gym for girls and raising the question of being allowed to smoke in class? But--the roof really blew off when his youngest daughter Ginger tried out for the football team and made it! It seemed, when he tried to defend her, everyone--her boyfriend, her two older sisters, his business associates--everyone was against him! Help!! 20 In Memoriam They must have been two saintly souls Unlike this World of Strife That ever God should Call them in The very bloom of life; When youth is reaching out with arms Untouched by qualm of dread, To happiness and beauty and To all that lies ahead. Mary Melton When hearts are bound together by The trysts of yesteryears And time is only something to Record the smiles and tears. They must have been two creatures fair With eager eyes and gay, For angels of the Night to come And carry them away. James J. Although we have only one year of high school to look forward to, we fondly recall our other three. This year we received our class rings which we proudly display to anyone who will look. We stripped cane for the first time this year and we found that it isn't nearly as easy as it looks . We are at the midpoint of our high school years--two years to remember and two years to look forward to. Our class jackets and sweaters arrived and everyone agrees that they are really sharp. Some of our boys went collegiate and ordered sweaters along with their jackets. Our main money-making project this year was sponsoring the coat check at the basketball games. We are the FRESHMEN. After all these years we have finally made it to high school. It's funny, though, we don't feel nearly as old as the other high school freshmen always seemed to us . Initiation wasn't at all as horrible as we were told. Already we are planning how to initiate next year's Green Freshmen. Our goal this year is to sell more magazine subscriptions than any other class has in the past. And we will, too!! We will never forget our Freshman year because we remember. Junior Classical League The Latin Club is again as it has been since its beginning in 1955 under the leadership of the school's Latin teacher, Miss Moulton. Membership in the Latin Club is restricted to students taking either first or second year Latin. Our local club is a member of the Junior Classical League, which is a nationwide organization. New members of the club are initiated at an evening meeting held at the beginning of the year. An impressive candlelight ceremony provides an atmosphere of mysterious ancient flavor. The biggest event of the year for the members of the Latin Club is the Roman banquet usually held during the Ides of March. Members go to much trouble planning costumes, the menu, and the entertainment so that this banquet will resemble as closely as possible a true Roman banquet. Prospective members of next year's club are fittingly used as slaves at this event. The main purpose of the Latin Club is to stimulate an interest in the students for Latin and the classics. It also promotes friendship among students who are interested in and enjoy Latin. --Gretchen Deal 58 ROW 1: Mrs. Diehl, Sponsor; Judy Keltner, Vice-President; Sharon Adelsperger, Treasurer; Barbara Brenton, Secretary; Mike Welch, President. This club is open to all students who are taking or have taken at least one year of high school Spanish. This club is an extracurricular activity which meets solely for the purpose of bringing our students more enthusiasm and interest in the Spanish language and for promoting fellowship among those students who show a keen interest in the Spanish language. As a freshman, one becomes eligible to take the first year Spanish course. At the first meeting of the Spanish Club, the new student, and any student having taken first year Spanish previously, may attend the meeting to decide if he is interested in joining the club. If he decides to join, he returns to the second meeting and pays a small amount as dues. This year a new Constitution was drawn up for the club. At meetings of the Spanish Club, members discuss the club's business and then have some form of entertainment pertaining to the Spanish language as their program. --Gretchen Deal 59 ROW 1: Judy Keltner, Vice-President; Sandra Hobson, Tom McClure, Mike Wright. Student Council — Democracy in Practice The purpose of the Student Council shall be to establish, create, and maintain a high standard of living at Union City Community High School; to present to students more and greater experiences in self-government; to create understanding and cooperation between faculty and students; and to promote school spirit. In order to carry out these many functions, the Student Council has taken charge of and is responsible for freshman initiation and the freshman dance, planning parades and festivities, backing our basketball and football team, and conducting class elections. These many and varied activities of the Student Council have proven to be of great interest and enjoyment to all high school classes. The student body president also serves as president of the Student Council. Each of the high school classes are allowed four representatives to the Council. These representatives must be people of good character and they must maintain good scholastic averages. This year our Student Council seems to have initiated a new policy. They seem to be more aware of all of the ideas of the students and they have tried to incorporate these ideas into their plans. This new policy has brought about a stronger bond between the student governing body and the students. The Student Council is a worthwhile organization respected by all. --Beverly Chenoweth 60 SEATED: Carol Wasson, Becky Harshman, Mr. Shank, Sponsor; Kathy Corbin, Judy Evans. Each year ten per cent of the junior class and five per cent of the senior class are chosen to be members of this organization. These members must be in the upper third of their respective classes. These students are evaluated for membership on four principal qualifications. These are scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Each of these qualities are rated a maximum of twenty -five points. This last year all National Honor Society members received navy blue blazers with the society's emblem from the local Tri Kappa organization of Union City. The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the students of this high school. --Beverly Chenoweth 61 I I The Music Goes The band which is under the direction of Mr. Romano is an extra-curricular activity which takes much work and interest on the part of the participating students. The purposes of the band are to offer the students chances to utilize their ability and also to increase their interest in music. Many high school band members participate in solo and ensemble contests. A contest is held in the spring for the entire band Usually the band holds two concerts a year --one in the spring and another in the fall. We are very proud of the students at this school who make up our band. --Gretchen Peal ROW 1: Sharon Aukerman, Edna Dodd, Patty Noonan, Shirley Sipe. The purpose of the Tri-Hi-Y is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community, high standards of Christian character. The platform of the club is Clean Speech, Clean Sports, Clean Scholarship, and Clean Living. Tri-Hi-Y clubs were founded just after the First World War. The first group was started in Wanesboro, Pennsylvania in 1919, and in 1939 the present name and insignia used by all clubs was nationally adopted. Our local chapter of Tri-Hi-Y is composed of twenty-nine members. Hi-Y The Hi-Y is a service club for all high school boys whose principal ideas are to serve their school and community. The platform of the organization is this: Clean Living, Clean Speech, Clean Sports, and Clean Scholarship. Its purpose is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school, church, and community; high standards of Christian character. The first Hi-Y had its beginning in 1899 in Chapman, Kansas. It was founded to serve as a Bible Study group for the boys of the town. It is closely affiliated with theY.M.C.A. clubs. The Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y work closely together in presenting programs at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter for the student body. Both of these clubs also attend different churches throughout the local area. The Hi-Y is an excellent organization for all young men for in its own small way it is creating a better world for everyone. Members of this organization are learning how to become better citizens. Edward Young once said, A Christian is the highest style of man, and this is what the Hi-Y is trying to accomplish--building a higher style of man. - -Beverly Chenoweth 65 ROW 1: Elaine Hathaway, Judi Fulk, Cheryl Bothast, Ray Hurst, David Dean, Julia Welch, Susan Hicks, Peggy Burke, Mrs. Stocksdale, Director. Our high school chorus is responsible for much enjoyment in our school. The chorus consists of boys and girls from grades nine through twelve. The only requirement for membership is that a student enjoy music. At Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter the high school chorus presents musical programs, much to the enjoyment of everyone. Our chorus also participates in several contests throughout the state each year. Our chorus has always done well at these state contests. This year the chorus was asked to present a Christmas program for the local Rotary Club. Just this year a new program was es- tablished in our school concerning chorus. For the first time the seventh and eighth grade students are being offered chorus as an extracurricular activity. All participants of this program meet one night a week after school for practice. Our chorus has not only brought enjoyment to its listeners but also to its participants. It offers anyone interested in music a chance to enjoy and develop this interest. Our high school chorus has proven to be a worthwhile organization. This year the chorus is directed by Mrs. Eugene Stocksdale. 66 --Beverly Chenoweth SEATED: Judy Keltner, Literary Editor; Cathie Starr, Asst. We have had a yearbook at our school since 1917 when the seniors of the old South Side building published a pamphlet with faculty and senior pictures, editorials, jokes, and ads. Since that time the yearbook has continually been expanding. A yearbook is meant to serve as a memory book for the students of the school. This year we chose as our theme, We Remember, with the hope that we could publish a book that would bring back memories of school life. The staff has been working hard on this book throughout the year. There have been countless hours spent planning the book, soliciting advertisements, laying out pages, taking and retaking pictures, writing and rewriting, checking and rechecking, typing and retyping, and carrying out many other duties. We cuold not have published this book without the help that we received from others. We wish to thank Miss Sandra King, who was our yearbook sponsor this year, and Mr. Keever, our photographer, who we felt did an excellent job with our division pages. The cooperation of the entire faculty, the administration, the student body, and the businessmen of Union City has been indispensable. We present the 1964 Successus to you. It is your yearbook! Future Homemakers of America The Future Homemakers of America is a national organization of girls studying homemaking in high schools of the United States and its territories. The F.H.A. was organized in 1944 by a group of students and adult advisors interested in homemaking. The overall goal of the organization is to help individuals improve personal, family, and community living, now and in the future. The motto, Toward New Horizons, reminds members that contributions to home life today will influence the kinds of homes they have tomorrow, that the family life of members will influence the community and the world. In keeping with their goal and motto, the Union City chapter of F.H.A. sponsors worthwhile community and school projects such as the making of cookies for mental health patients and sponsoring a good grooming contest for the student body. Our local Future Homemakers Club works closely with out local Future Farmers Club. The two clubs hold many joint parties, and each year the FFA elects a Sweetheart from the FHA Club. The flower of the FHA is the red rose. Because of its beauty, the rose represents the search of Future Homemakers of America for beauty in everyday living. The colors of FHA are red and white. Red, an intense color, suggests strength. White is recognized as the symbol of sincerity. These colors inspire Future Homemakers of America with the courage and determination to succeed. —Kathy Corbin 70 ROW 1: Tom Cline, Treasurer; John Hersberger, Sentinel; Ronnie Price, Secretary; Mike Curtner, Vice-President; Jim Wasson, President; Jerry Curtner, Reporter; Mr. Evans, Sponsor. Future Farmers of America The primary aim of the Future Farmers of America is the development of agriculture, leadership, cooperation, and citizenship. To become a member of F.F.A., one must be taking a vocational agriculture class, know the creed, and keep a record of a farm project. The boys in F.F.A. participate in many activities. They attend the National F.F.A. Convention at Kansas City and the International Livestock Show at Chicago. They participate in poultry, livestock, grain, and soil judging contests. First year boys in F.F.A. get their informal initiation in agricultural practice by caring for the twelve acre corn project that the club has. The F.F.A. Club gives the members a chance to learn more about agriculture and to assume the responsibilities that will confront tomorrow's farmers. --Anne Chew 71 ROW 1: Mrs. Mendenhall, Sponsor; Kay Marshall, Membership Chairman; Susan Van Vickie, President; Cathie Starr, Director of Activities; Sharon Adelsperger, Treasurer; Carol Wasson, Vice-President; Sue Powers, Secretary. Future Nurses of America Future Nurses of America is an organization dedicated to the purpose of bringing together young people who are interested in careers of nursing and health in order that they might share each other's interest and explore the opportunities and requirements of the medical profession. The Union City chapter of F.N.A. is a coeducational high school career club that consists of students in grades nine through twelve. The club has one main project. Every member of the club in grades ten through twelve is given the opportunity to work at the local hospital. The members assist the nurses aides at mealtime by delivering trays and feeding the patients. The Union City chapter of F.N.A. is relatively new in our school, having been started in 1962. In future years the club hopes to expand to include other fields of medicine such as doctors, medical technicians and therapists. The club now has a membership of thirty girls. The national F.N.A. colors are blue and white, and the most important insignia is the medical emblem . --Kathy Corbin 72 FRONT: Miss King, Librarian; Tina Higgins, Linda Holmes, Crystal Pinney, Karen Weimer, Diane Journey, Susie Oswalt. BACK: Chester Mock, Paul Dodd. Absent: Sandy Hinkle, Mick Carpenter. Librarians—Books, Fines, Bulletin Boards. This year the student librarians are under the direction of the new head librarian, Miss King. At the beginning of the school year, the student librarians are chosen from those students who have good grade averages or those who have an extra study hall and who offer to give up one to assist Miss King in the constantly busy library. The student librarian must perform many duties in the library. He not only checks books in and out, but he also must be able to classify books, read book shelves, know what material is available for use, help other students with book selections, keep order in the library at all times, keep a close check on overdue books, keep the library neat in appearance, type book cards, straighten magazines, and design bulletin boards. Student librarians in our school must know the library and be willing to work with the head librarian and other students. The purpose of having student librarians is to acquaint these assistants with the intricate workings of a school library. Also, the student's work is directed towards the goal of more worthwhile reading. --Gretchen Deal 73 This year, the Student Council decided to change the system of electing the Homecoming Queen. Many students felt that this honor should be given to a senior girl as it is in other schools; but, they felt that the other classes should not be completely ignored. It was hoped the system decided upon by the Queen committee would satisfy everyone. Four senior girls were chosen as queen candidates. The one receiving the highest number of votes from the entire student body was queen. Two girls from each of the other high school classes were chosen as candidates for the queen's court. The girls in each class receiving the highest number of votes were members of the court. The senior queen candidates were Suzanne Ruff, Margaret Fitzmaurice, Jeanne Baker, and Nancy Vickery. The 1963-1964 Homecoming Queen was Miss Nancy Vickery. Members of her court were Sharon Adelsperger, Cathy Bar-num, Cathy Deasley, and Sandra Hobson. --Judy Keltner Seniors Took the Honors This Year Miss Jayne Noonan was Union City Community High School's candidate for the queen of the Jaycees' Mardi Gras held in Winchester each year. Jayne together with six other girls from schools throughout the county attended a special banquet for candidates and their friends and families, and attended a dance appropriately called Autumn Fantasy where she competed in a talent show. e Remember Our TEAMS ROW 1: Mr. Goldsberry, Sponsor; Chester Mock, Bill Miller, Jim Noffsinger, Larry Runkel, Sam Bradbum. The Lettermen’s Club The Letterman's Club is an honorary club which was started in 1957 by Coach Gary Keesling. The high school cheerleaders are considered honorary members of the Letterman's Club. The boys who belong to this club are eligible for membership because they have earned a letter in one of the following sports: basketball, football, track, cross country, baseball, golf, tennis, or wrestling. To earn a letter in any of these sports a boy must meet certain standards which have been determined for each classification. If a boy wishes to receive a sweater, he must earn four letters; a jacket requires eight letters, and a blanket, twelve letters. Letterman's Club provides a strong incentive to the boys of our school to participate in sports and to develop to the best of their abilities. --Anne Chew 76 Cheerleaders: Sharon Welch, Sue Powers, Judi Fulk, Judy Keltner.
