19 THE BUCCESSU5 VARSITY BASKETBALL Highlights for the 1937 - 38 season inclxide the victories over Winchester, Eaton (Ohio), Lynn, and Berne. Twice Winchester's Yellow Jackets were defeated by the Wildcats. The first victory was the soundest drubbing Winchester had been administered in the last three years, and the second triumph waa a thrilling double overtime. The Wildcats also tamed the Eaton (Ohio) Golden Eagles. This was the Eagles first and only defeat of the scheduled season. The Victory Horseshoe, which was captured by the Wildcats from Lynn, 31 - 25, was retained by Union City for the longest time in several years. Seniors on the tournament team were Wendell Riffle, John Minnich, forwards; James Cotter, Harold Buckingham, Robert Brierly, centers; Robert Chattin, Robert Ely, guards. The three remaining members of the tournament squad were Ivan Keever, a junior; John Kirwin, Stanley Riffle, sophomores. In the sectional tournament the Wildcats were upset, 23 - 19, by McKinley. Five of the first six varsity-men were fouled out of the game, and the victors were aided greatly by fifteen foul points. Union City's cheering for the season was led by Martha Chenoweth, Martha Mangas, and Joe Sutton.  ? THE SUCCESSUS BASEBALL Five baseball games were played in the fall of 1937. The Wildcats won four and lost one, that being to Winchester. Bob Ely had the highest batting average with .583. The other players were Wendell Riffle, Robert Guernsey, John Minnich, Paul Barth, Richard Ely, Richard Birum, Stanley Riffle, Robert Chattin, Robert Brierly, Richard Whitesel, Carlton Fraze, Lowell Whitesel, and Fred Snook. Robert Ungericht and Shirley Garver from the winning team, the Bums, averaged the highest scores with 160 and 125 respectively. This is the third year that bowling has been a popular minor sport.
