OUR PAST Yes, here it is, 1947, and we as seniors have at last attained our goal But it wasn't mere fate which destined us to be the l947 seniors, it has required much effort and patience So, in retrospect, we will pic ture our steady progress up the ladder to our final goal graduation Remember, back in September, 1935, when mother combed those curls Cusually bangsl, and shined that new pair of shoes, gave you your 'readin', 'ritin', and 'r1thmetic, and kissing you gently on the cheek, sent you to school for your first big day? Being a little shy at first, but soon catching on to the new rou tine, twenty nine first graders were greeted by our fine teacher, Miss Mar tin My, wasn't that a bunch! Only seven of the twenty nine beginning stu dents, however, have remained throughout the entire twelve years They are Erma Lou Bozell, Richard Bumgarner, Eldon Clark, Florian Flum, MarceD1e Kep linger, Robert Kumfer, and Marilyn Pence After Christmas, the Gayot twins Mildred and Marcella, blew in from Rookcreek, making things much more cummi cated for our class As we began our second year, a new face appears Why she has two black pigtails, tied with red ribbons! Yes, it was Mary Lu Burger, from New Bhven Phonics was stressed by Miss Martin that year to impress upon our minds the correct pronunciation of words Maxine Carl, a little blue eyed blonde from Ossian, began her first round at Union soon afterChristmas, too horseshoe seemed to be our delight, and Miss Thomas Know Mrs Fetterhoff found it easy to keep her pupils entertained during recess Girls seemed to be gaining the stronghold by out numbering the boys as two more lassies arrived from laynedele Norma Fisher and Wilodene Dennis joined us the lat ter part of the year Before we realized it, we had been promoted to the fourth grade a different room and a new teacher, Miss Eulala Martin Know Mrs Mclean! Autograph books seemed to be popular that year, so we were kept busy think ing up new verses Upon entering our room the following year, we hear a definitely masculine voice, and find that for the first time in our school life we are confronted with a man for our teacher, namely, Mr Corll Maxine Carl, seeming a little restless this year, decided to continue her education in Markle Say, what was that streak of red which iusf flashed past me? Oh, it's a new boy, is it? Sure enough, a red headed boy appeared on the scene from Fort Wayne His enrollment card gives his name as Clarence Smith, but he's just plain 'Red' to most of us This was our sixth big year, with Mr Corll still our competent guide Mr Wall decides to try his hand with our class the following year, so we journey across the hall to the only remaining room downstairs for our seventh grade This year, Joan Sickafus Joins us from Election Grade School in Adams County, and, 'Well, look over there, isn't tmn:Ma:1ne Carl againt' This time she plans to stay at Union and complete her high school work with her former classmates A l O 7 9 Oh! There goes the bell--run and get the horseshoes out! Playing , -
