SPORTS RUUND UP The year of 1946 1947 brought with it Mr Egly as our new coach, taking the place of Mr Boyd who coached the preceding three years, Betty Hartleroad as our cheer leader, following Norma Fisher and Marllyn Pence's two year leadership, and probably Pete Carey as our wlnner o the foul shoot ing contest The fallsoftball season this year was short, wlth the team playln a total of six games We won two and lost four Osslan defeated Union twlce, also Lancaster defeated Union twice, and Unlon defeated Rockcreek twlce The team consisted of 15 players Florian Flum, catcher, Kenneth Herndon, pitcher, Pete Carey, first, Guy Shutt, short stop Red Smlth, rlght field, Max Walton, center field, Herb Best, left fleld, and the subs were Ronald Fisher, Bill Weikel, Bob Ertel, and Nell Hoopingarner The basketball season started w1th a sweet, but hard victory over Ossian, 52 50 The next two games we lost to Chester, 41 18, and Lancaster, 50 22 Our fourth game was a victory over our old friends from Lafayette, 56 55, and another victory over Jackson followed, score 58 25 The fellows ran into tough luck the following week and were defeated by West Union, 51 Our scores ran close in the next two games which were victories over Liberty, 40 56, and Huntlngton Twp 59 56 Our boys were stlll playing good ball, but Rockcreek managed to defeat us, 54 50 Our last game before the County Tourney was postponed because dfthe ice storm jamming our electricity The tourney,Jan 10 11, gave us those leaping Panthers from Petrol eum who defeated us, 55 57 Our next four games were rather gloomy, as our boys were defeated by Roanoke,45 25, Petroleum, 50 25, Lafayette, 26 21, and Ossian,4U 16 Even this didn't back down the boys' moral With a few changes in playexs, our boys met their old victors from Rockcreek and gained the victory this time, 62 40 The Badgers came back to defeat West Unlon the second game, 55 27 Our second tilt with Lancaster ended with a score of 47 15, Lancas ter's favor The final was with a new rival, Monmouth, and it ended ln a 47 to 26 defeat This year the team wDl lose threecf their players who are senlors Bob Kumfer, guard, Florian Flum, forward, and Herb Best, center Bob played three years on second, one year on first Florian played 5 years on second, 1 year on first Herb played 2 years on second, 2 years on first. Guy Shutt, a junion is our other guard, with 1 year on second, and is f1n1sh1ng his sa: ond year on first Pete Carey,our high scoring sophomore forward, has played 1 year on second, one year on flrst, and it looks as if he wlll continue to play on first Our subs lnclude Bill Weikel, a junior, who plays in some of the games as a forward Max Walton, sophomore, has been playlng as a regular in our last games Ronald Fisher, sophomore, is playing as a regular now Ed Bushee, junior,is regular on second team, subs on first Don Caley, a sooho more, is also a regular on second team and sub on first Union was defeated their first game ofthe Sectional Tourney by the Rockcreek Dodgers Rockcreek lead all through the game whlch ended with a final victory of 24 54 for the Dodgers A - ' a A - c K., o . 46 ACTIVITIES 47 Four dars after the opening of school,Saturday, August 5l,ND Boyd took twenty six 4I1boys and glrls to the Indianapolis State Fair There they enjoyed seelnv many 8XhlbltS The last week ln September of this year brought the return of the Bluffton free street fair Wlth this came the annual participatlon of all Wells County schools and thelr bands in the school parade This started our band on a seasonci'play1ng at baU.games and ended by playlng at tne Bluffton muslc festival In September,also, the band, under Mr Blough's supervlslon, traveled to Muncle to see a football game between Ball State and Manchester On October 24,l945,the seniors,then Juniors, presented their flrst class play 'Free Advice One year later, October 25, they presented the r senior play HThere Goes the Bride' The complete list of the cast was Pnyl 11s, a hot headed young bride, Iarllyn Pence, Mrs Curtis, the wonderful mother, Joan Sickafus, Dr Curtis, who cured aD, Kenneth Herndon, Beacdy tne lovable C J kld sister, Norma Fisher, Billy, who was always on the run, Dlck Bumgarner, Anastasla, the Irlsh cook, Haxlne Carl, Officer O'Flynn, who was doin'his duty b'gory, Don Paxson, Natalle, who loved another girys man, l dred and Marcella Cayot, Lewis, groom who had his eye on the future, ROD6Pt Kumfer, Sally, out to get her man, Wilodene Dennis, Tom Eldrldge, who found his one and only, Florlan Flum, and Dinty, the true friend of Tom, Herb Best The story revolved around a hot headed young glrl, Phyllis Curtls The day before the weddlng she found her groom,Lewis,kissing her bridesnald, Natalle Phyllis blew up and told h6WlS she would propose to tne next man sne saw, at that tlme Tom Eldrldge walked ln and Phyllis proposed, Tom ac cepted but Lewls couldn't belleve lt Then she and Lewis planned to elope, Phyllls eloped Dr and Mrs Curtis Just trled to make the household run smoothly Sally was always chasing Billy But Beachy was always doing somethlnv to bother someone Anastasla and Offlcer O'Flynn had an IP1SH romance to end all ronances On March 48, tne Junlors presented their three act comedy mystery play called HPleased To Meetchau Tne characters were ilna Grlm, Ed Bushee, Marcella Boxell, Jlm Anderson, Betty Uartleroad, Guy Shutt, Frank wall, Nell Hoooinvarner, Bob nrtel, Phyllis Wilson, Juanita Baker, and Bill Welkel The sextet was organized in September The members are flrst so pranos, Marllxn Pence, Isabel Borton, second sopranos, Marceille hepllnger, Joan Fishbaugh, altos, Colleen Denney and Evelyn Guy They sang for the Jun ior play and several programs given at surrounding churches Under the direction of Mrs Hinton, a Christmas program was pre sented to the parents and guests of the students. It included numbers by all the grades and songs by the boys and glrls' chorus A vocal solo, nwhite Christmas was given by Dick Thomas nHe Shall Feed His Flocksn was sung a a duet by Isabel Borton and Evelyn Guy A marimba solo, UThe Holy City,H was presented by uarceille Yeplinger Colleen Denney acted as a senate page at lndlanapolis, January 2 Her duty was to dellver any mes ages that came in Rxrthe senators while they were in session frank Nall was a winner in the WOWO Journal Gazette Speech Contesg February 8, he had the speech recorded at wOwO Scholarshlp plns were given to Marceille Keplinger, class valedlc torian, and Marllyn Pence, who was salutatorian, at Commencement exelcises T 1' . .
