As the crew of the UNION departed San Diego for the long trip to Westpac in February, no one realized just how much effort and teamwork would be needed before we returned home. To emphasize some of the effort put forward by the officers and crew, here are a few statistics: The Boatswain Mates used a total of 3,840 gallons of paint and 644 gallons of thinner in their spaces. The cooks prepared 636 meals and 136 midrats in which were consumed 8,808 loaves of bread, 9,740 gallons of milk, 7,659 dozen eggs, and 19,059 pounds of beef Qmostly roast beefy. Operations Department managed to use 31,6 miles of teletype paper. To combat the heat of the Asiatic sun, Supply sold 49.779 cans of pop. On April the llth Disbursing had its big- gest payday of the cruise totaling 3356,008.00. or an average of 3227.68 per man. Engineering showed skill in holding the fuel mileage to 23,5 gallons per nautical mile for a total consumption of 1,206,000 gallons of fuel. Navigation directed the UNION over 35,200 miles of water without so much as hitting a whale, We sail- ors with our variety of rates, our extremes of ages, and our diversity of back- ground and interests, shared the common desire for homecoming.
