Personnel Elmer Hoss Harvey, captain of the team, was its most valuable player. He played a consistent game, making every run count, and placing every punt on the very spot he wanted to. Gene Beck, captain-elect for 1930, was a consistent plunger, gaining yardage every time a gain was needed. When Gene smashed the line for a gain, he ordinarily made it. Rice was a big cog in the grid machine at center. He played the pivot position with great skill. His only slip was losing his pants in the Elizabethton game. Red Duncan was a powerful link in the line chain, always keeping his man out on the defensive and breaking through on the offense. Chester Hensley, the big two hundred pound guard, was a regular battering ram, stopping the opponents in their tracks. Howze showed his skill always. He was a tower of strength in the line, stopping advances dead still, and chasing through like a demon on the offensive. Masters held his position as tackle in a very capable manner. He was a hard hitter and a vicious rackler. Edmond Congdon was a bulwark of defense at either guard or tackle, playing a clean, hard game. ':Andy Ellis, the fast stepping end, was a menace at all times to the opposing teams. He would snare a pass and be across the goal line before the opponents knew what had happened. On the other end was Q'Farmer Booth. He played throughout the season with a smileg the smile caught the opponents off their guard, Farmer's', hit took them off their feet. Wfitt, our little triple threat halfback, could twist through a line like a corkscrew. He was a valuable man, indispensable to the team. Sump Austin was a very valuable reserve who showed up splendidly when called upon. Void Deaton, a sturdy half, was a fast runner in every instance, especially his 60-yard dash in the Elizabethton game for our only touchdown. Pickering, a valuable reserve half, played wonderfully. He came to the team's aid at every opportunity. PAGE 50
