The Literary Societies So broad is the field of English that we have found it impossible to include in the regular recitation periods the discussion of many important things other than those found in the literary texts. In order to enlarge our study, three classes in American and English Literature were organized into literary clubs early in the school year of 1929. The meetings of these societies are held semi-monthly during the regular English class periods on Monday. The programs are planned by program committees which are appointed at each meeting, approved by the faculty advisor, and given by members of the society. The president presides at all the meetings and directs all procedure. All ofhcers save the critic serve for one semester. A new critic is elected every month in order that more members may have the opportunity of learning the art of criticism. Various topics are discussed and the meetings have served to arouse the enthusiasm of the members concerning the great authors and their works of hction, poetry, drama, and modern short stories, as well as ancient and modern history. Magazines in the school library afford material for talks on various current topics. Debates on subjects of interest at the present time are frequently given. All members of the societies must appear on the program a certain number of times each semester and are graded on their manner of presentation. Those in the school who are not members of the three literary clubs learn of the programs and works of the societies through attractive posters which are made and placed on the bulletin board by the program committees. It is the duty of the reporters of the clubs to see that all meetings are given publicity through The Yellow Jacketf, the high school paper. The literary society fulfills a need of the high school student. It teaches him the procedure of parliamentary law, it creates an interest in current eventsg it helps the pupil to become familiar with the best magazines of the day, it enables him to speak the English language correctly and to become aware of his errors in the use of grammarg it teaches him the aft of criticismg it creates an interest in regular classroom work by varying its programg and it helps the student to have self-control and to express his ideas before other people. The spirit manifested by the members of the three literary clubs has been excellent. The students have shown much interest in the work of the societies and, for the most part, have responded to all requests that have been made of them. We feel that a step forward has been made through the organization of these clubs and that as we gain in experience, a very decided benefit will be derived from them. PAGE 45
