A lot of people stayed home to at- tend Umpqua because it would save them money, but books were more ex- pensive here and there was a lot of mileage put on many vehicles. Conse- quently, many students found jobs around the school and in town. Umpqua sported garbage collectors and lifeguards, dog collectors and bowling alley atten- dants.
