BOYS The highlight of the Umpire Sr. Boys team was on Janu- ary 25, 1988 when they went on the road to meet the Win- throp Wolves. The Sr. Boy team consists of )erry Bailey, Barry Bailey, Jeff Cook, Scott Kesterson. Phillip Burgess, and Roger Pierce. Winthrop came out strong and dominat- ed the first quarter by a 14 to 16 lead, but the Wildcats made a comeback and took the lead by halftime. 19 to 18. Jeff Cook contributed 13 of those 19 points, and Barry and Jerry Bailey were very agressive on rebounding. The third period was very evenly matched with each team scoring 14 points which still left the Sr. Boy Wildcats in the lead by 33 to 32. The last period was the most thrilling, ending in an over- time of 45 to 45. The next three minutes were even more exciting with Jeff Cook scoring a field goal, and Phillip Bur- gess adding two free throws while the opponent only scored three points leaving the Sr. Wildcats on top by one. Jeff Cook led the Wildcats with 25 points and 10 rebounds; Bar- ry Bailey added 12 points and 7 rebounds. Jerry Bailey had 4 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists. Phillip Burgess had 6 points and 7 rebounds. Scott Kesterson had 2 points and 3 rebounds. Roger Pierce had 2 rebounds. An additional highlight for the team was on February 27 when Barry Bailey received an All-District Award at the 7-B West District Tournament at Wickes. SR. GIRLS The Umpire Lady Wildcats triumphed over the Lady Bulldogs, thrilling the crowd with their performance. A devastating loss early in the season against the Amity Rams pushed them to work harder going into the OBU Tournament. They defeated Gurdon and Beebee to ad- vance to the finals against the unbeaten Saratoga Bull- dogs. They handed them their first defeat 39-40. The next week in the Dierks Tournament the Lady Wildcats were defeated in the finals by the Van-Cove Hornets. The Horatio Tournament came next; they defeated Springhill to advance to the semifinals against Fouke. The Lady Wildcats beat the Lady Panthers by a narrow margin of 59-58 and went on to defeat Horatio in the finals by a score of 53-52. After the Christmas holidays, the Lady Wildcats came back strong against Acorn, Delight, and Winthrop. They received their third loss when they trav- eled to Amity. They went into the District Tournament with a 27-3 record. Their first game in the District Tourna- ment was against the Lady Hornets of Van-Cove. They beat them by a score of 75-65. They then advanced to the finals against the Wickes Lady Warriors. They beat the Warriors to gain the District Championship. The Lady Wildcats played their first game in the Regional Tourna- ment at Emerson on March 2. They defeated the Taylor Tigers by a score of 57-53. JR. GIRLS The Umpire Jr. Girls opened the season with a victory of 27-16 over Delight. Deanna led the Jr. Lady Wildcats with 17 points and Jennifer Conners led in rebounding with 8. We had our second win over the Amity Rams with a score of 27-16. Deanna scored 10 points while Jennifer scored 9. The next win came on our home turf when the Winthrop Wolves paid a visit, and we dominated the game with a final score of 47-25. Deanna had the season high with 23 points in the game. A non-conference game with Glenwood brought us our 4th win with a final score of 36-16. Deanna led in scoring with 13 points and in rebounding with 5. When we played the Hatfield Bobcats, we came out on top — 23-19. Suzanne Gardner led the team in scoring with 8 points; Deanna followed with 7, Jennifer added 4, Stephan- ie Golden and Lori Pinkerton each had 2. In January, we competed in the Lockesburg Jr. Tourney and defeated Min- eral Springs 28-17 before meeting Lockesburg and being defeated. We chalked up our 7th win against Hatfield 30- 12. We finished the conference in 4th place and went on to defeat Oden in our first game in District by a score of 32-24. We then advanced to the semi-finals to meet the Wickes Warriors. We were off to a sizable lead in the first period by 14-6 and still led at halftime 16-13. The Warriors came back strong in the third period outscoring us by 6 giv- ing them a 30-27 lead and keeping it in the fourth with a 46-42 win. Other highlights for the Jr. Girls team was being the recipient of three Sportsmanship trophies from the Lockesburg Jr. Tournament, Umpire Jr. Tournament, and the 7B West District Tournament. JR. Michael scored 8 and pulled down 6 rebounds; Cheyne scored 7 points and had 2 rebounds; Jason Mack had 2 points and Shawn Tomblin scored a 3 pointer.
