THE 1977 BULLDOG’S TALE UMATILLA HIGH SCHOOL TROWELL AVENUE UMATILLA, FLORIDA 32784 Editors: Susan Lengemarm and Sylvia Shields Today is the end of our journey through high school. Tomorrow is our beginning of a new life. 2 Opening Opening 3 We leave you in our fears and hopes but mostly We leave you with our dreams of tomorrow. 4 Opening So we say to you today it is the end of the beginning! Sherie Shields Opening 5 MR. DAHLBERG, It is with a great deal of thought and delibera- tion that it was decided to dedicate this year's annual to Mr. Bernard Dahlberg. Mr. Dahlberg is a graduate of Florida Techno- logical University, and has been at Umatilla since 1973. He teaches Business Occup., Typing I and II, Shorthand I and II, Bookkeeping I and II and Clerical Office Practice. Mr. Dahlberg is a one hundred percent teacher. His many extra hours that he puts in with Annual Staff, andF.B.L.A., bears this out. He can be counted on to do the right thing - not one way today and a different way tomorrow. Students know what to expect and if it doesn’t involve learning - forget it. Sure, we try his patience and he has his moments, but then some days we students seem to have a little extra touch of contankerousness, too. Mr. Dahlberg, it is of small recompense but we appreciate you, admire you and love you. 8 Student Life Student Life 9 JLATIQ: seNIOrs 10 Student Life Student Life 11 I I 12 Sports Division Sports Division 1 3 ALFRED WILDER End CURTIS LUCAS Guard CHARLES FUSSELL Linebacker EDWARD HESTER Fullback CHUCK CALHOUN End TIM GREEN Center J5RIAN CADWELL [Center [ G. Si yajtoaA z Sports 19 For the second straight year the fighting Bulldogs reached the quarter finals of the state playoffs and as always no one person can claim full credit as each member was equally responsible. Receiving highest acclaim on this year’s squad was Mickey Donaldson and David Foster as they both were named to the all state second team. Donaldson played both first string quarterback and defensive back the entire season while Foster was a defen- sive tackle until a midsea- son injury. Both the offensive and defensive lines were noted for their abilities and often made the difference in the games as they cleared holes for their own backs and clogged holes against the opposing backfields. Games highlighting this season included an opening 6-7 loss to triple A power Jacksonville Bolles which proved to be our only loss until the playoffs when we were defeated by Ft. Meade and a few close calls. Other victories included a stomping 40-0 win over then first ranked Wildwood. This victory alone shot us up five places in the state standings to the number two slot. Also for the second straight year the 'WVjulldogs defeated arch f 20 Sports rival Eustis by a definite 47-6 margin. Down in Clermont both the hosts and the visitors fell prey to a torrential rain storm and the Bulldogs just squeaked out with a one TD victory. We congratulate the '76 edition of the fighting Bull- dogs and coaching staff for a fine season and hope that there isn't too much disap- pointment over the playoff loss. A e 0- . Our aim is understanding through commu- nication. We feel that if we can continue to communicate, success will be ours. Beginning with the February issue a whole new concept of publication was begun with printing being accomplished by Lake Region. Stories and articles writ- ten and edited by the staff are then printed in standard newsprint. greatest! Our students are the finest, our teachers are dedicated, and our parents are involved in our school program. With this kind of school it is a real pleasure to be the principal of Umatilla High School. The heart of the school is the instruction program. We have a fine instructional program that is balanced between the academics and vocational courses. We have continued to improve the instructional curriculum in both the number of courses and the quality of these courses. If schools only had instructional programs they would be very dull. This is why we have an extra-curricular program. We have increased our girls’ program by adding volleyball and girls' basketball. One of the highlights of the year was the football team winning the Dis- trict, Region, and Conference titles. Let's remember that pride in all areas of our school life is one of the most important atti- tudes we can develop. I am proud to be your principal and I would encourage you to be proud of your school. Sincerely, John P. Westervelt 150 Mr. Westervelt -M- t L.H C A ■ tfJZJ . We hope we have achieved that goal, because the purpose of any yearbook is to keep the school year alive. So, it is with a great deal of pride and satisfaction that we present this edition of THE BULLDOG'S TALE. It is difficult to put into words the thought, the prep- aration, the long hours, the bright moments and sometimes the disappointing moments of putting a yearbook to press. This end product is due to the devotion of staff, as well as patience and guidance of the advisors, the principal, the advertisers, and others of the community who contributed their support, without whom this book would not have been pos- sible.
